"STATE OF THE CLUB" SCHEDULED FOR THIS FRIDAY
The State of the Rotary Club of Canton

The July 22 meeting will be a “State of our Club” meeting. I will review our goals for 2016-17, our committee structure and chairs, our financial status, as well as introducing some of our committee chairs who will provide an overview of their committee’s projects and goals for 2016-17. At the conclusion of the presentations there will be tables setup where each committee chair will be talking about their committees and what they do. Each Canton Rotary member will have the opportunity to sign up for a committee of which they would enjoy being an active participant.

One of my goals for 2016-17 is to have every Canton Rotarian become more involved with the club and our projects, become more engaged with the spirit of Rotary and how we can improve not only our local community but the world, and by becoming more engaged with Canton Rotary we will all become more sharing of Rotary and invite more of our friends, neighbors, and colleagues to join our club.

2016-17 is the beginning of a journey to return the Rotary Club of Canton to its status of the premier Rotary Club in District 6650. This is not a one year journey, but rather this is the start of a long journey. We did not lose over half of our membership in one year;  we did not lose our focus on District goals, on involving our members, on sharing Rotary with our friends, and so forth in a one year period. These things have been slowly happening over a decade or longer, and there are no quick fixes. One of the primary things we need to accomplish as a club is being an important part of the Canton community. We made a good step in that direction with our support of the Market Square project. We need to keep that momentum going through more local projects, through continuing and growing our OktoberFest celebration, and with growing our membership.

There will be some changes that will be discussed and implemented over the next few years, these changes will be focused on positioning our club for growth, to increase not just our number of members but the diversity of our members, and to position our club to remain and become more important as a vital part of the fabric of what makes Canton, Ohio a special place.

I look forward to this journey with all of you, and I thank you for your confidence in me.

EDWARD AND BETTY FRANK PRESENTED WITH PAUL HARRIS FELLOW'S
During the July 15, 2016 meeting, Club Secretary Suzette Matthews along with PP Dan Matthews presented Suzette's parents, Edward and Betty Frank, with a Paul Harris Fellow.  Suzette had the following to say while presenting the PHF's:

"PAUL HARRIS FELLOWS, July 15, 2016

Be kind.  Be thankful.  Be thoughtful.

Always go the extra mile.  No one owes you anything. Do it right the first time.

Give from the heart, with all of your heart.

These are lessons that I am so grateful to have learned in watching my parents give and live so unselfishly to others in need throughout their lives.
Even when they had very little, they still found a way to give of their time, talent or treasure.

From countless donations of everything from their own homegrown Yukon Gold potatoes (that they still grow today), to hundreds of pairs of shoes, and money, time and effort to their community, church, family, and charities…they truly do exemplify “Giving from the heart, with heart.”
That is why Dan and I have chosen Edward and Betty Frank (my Mom & Dad), to receive the highest honor Rotary bestows on a person.
(Surprise! And you thought it was just lunch).

The Paul Harris Fellow Award is named after Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary. The award acknowledges “Service above Self” which that an individual has offered to their community, their nation and to the world.     Mom & Dad, this is YOU!

A donation has been made in your honor to this program to help promote peace, provide clean water, support mothers and children, promote education and literacy…and the biggest ROTARY GOAL…to ERADICATE POLIO and (in the very near future) have a POLIO FREE WORLD!

On behalf of The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, it gives us great joy to present to each of you, Edward Frank and Betty Frank, Paul Harris Fellowship Awards.

You now join the ranks of many other distinguished Paul Harris Fellows all over the world.

Congratulations!"

NEW GOLF COURSE - SAME GREAT DAY OF CAMARADERIE AND FRIENDSHIP
On Friday, August 19, 2016, the Rotary Club of Canton will host its annual golf outing at The Sanctuary Golf Club located at 2017 Applegrove Street N.W., North Canton.  Each year the outing brings more than 75 golfers together from many local Rotary Clubs to participate in a friendly competition, leaving only one Rotary Club with bragging rights for the next year.  This is a great day to bring guests or prospective members to see what Rotary is all about and meet some of the great people that are involved with Rotary.

As in the past, the golf outing will take the place of our regularly-scheduled Friday meeting.  This means all Canton Rotarians are welcome to come for lunch, even if they are not planning to golf. The cost for your lunch would be $13.00. We will be enjoying Old Carolina Barbecue at noon.

After lunch, those golfing will join their foursomes and participate in a scramble-format golf tournament.  Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in the scramble and for the longest drive, closest to the hole, and longest putt.

There will also be a putting contest, with the winner taking a BMW home for the weekend, courtesy of Cain BMW.

Please follow this LINK for a printable copy of the golf outing sign-up flyer.

ROTOFACT
As we start a new Rotary year, we took the opportunity to kick off our own Canton Rotary “Rotofact”. As often as we can and when deemed possible (based on time), we will be sharing a one minute Rotary fact, detail, historical perspective, or current event from around the world to remind ourselves of what Rotary means to us and why being a Rotarian matters.

Our first Rotofact is taken from the Rotarian Magazine, August 2016 issue, from the article on page 34 titled “Reasons To Love Rotary Right Now": We are about to eradicate a disease, and you can be a part of it. We are 99.9% of the way toward ending polio. As of early June, there were only 16 cases of wild poliovirus in the world, and many think this could be the year we see the last naturally occurring case of polio.

WEEKLY MEETING NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
At our weekly meeting on July 15, 2016, President Craig Young welcomed our members and guests to the meeting. President Craig asked the members to keep the following folks in their thoughts and prayers:  Rotarian Rick Sherer is recovering from shoulder surgery; and Rotarian Jan Baker's husband is recovering from quintuple bypass heart surgery.

President Craig also made a request for a Rotarian or someone any of us may know to become the host family for our incoming Youth Exchange Student.  This young man will be arriving in the month of August and we need to find him a residence to live during at least the first part of his stay ASAP.

Past President John Werren gave the Invocation.

Club Secretary Suzette Matthews welcomed the following guests to the meeting: Derek Weist (guest of Tim Shetzer), Betty Frank, Ed Frank, Dianne Williams, Estella Williams, Mandi Snyder and Robert Roland (incoming new member) all guests of Suzette and Dan Matthews.

The "Happy Bucks" news was then provided by the following Rotarians:
  • Robert J Matthews - gave a buck for his new whistle.
  •
  • PP Rick Taylor – congrats to the new Club President and Trustees - said he was sorry he missed the meeting and installation last week and wanted to let us know that he is not giving $10 to blatantly advertise his business this week. Also, Rick recognized PP Virginia Neutzling for her letter to the editor in the Rep, supporting our police and first responders.
  •
  • Bruce's Schorsten - gave a buck to draw attention to the ESPY awards and the great presentations on the show. Best foot forward for the athletes, particularly in supporting cancer patients and the Jimmy V Foundation. When it repeats, Bruce suggests we watch it.
  •
  • Shawn Dougherty - recognized the love and support given to a North Canton High School young man (Zach Herrera) who is being taken off of life support.  Please keep Zach and his family in your prayers
  •
  • Jim Lockshin - gave a buck because he was happy to be back attending our meetings.
  •
  • President Craig Young - recognized Jim Lockshin's return, as well as PP Paul White's casual and relaxed appearance (no suit and tie), which gives him hope for after his term.
  •
  • Suzette Matthews - gave a buck in honor of guests, Ed & Betty Frank, Dianne Williams, Estella Williams, Mandi Snyder and Rob Roland.
The following Rotarian turned in a makeup during Friday's meeting:  Tim Shetzer (Canton South).

NEW RI PRESIDENT, JOHN GERM'S, MONTHLY MESSAGE

JOHN F. GERM - PRESIDENT 2016-17
JULY 2016

Today, we look ahead toward a Rotary year that may one day be known as the greatest in our history: the year that sees the world's last case of polio. Wild poliovirus caused only 74 cases of polio in 2015, all of them in Afghanistan and Pakistan. As we continue to work tirelessly toward our goal of eradication, we must also look beyond it: preparing to leverage our success into even greater successes to come.

It is tremendously important to Rotary's future that our role in the eradication of polio be recognized. The more we are known for what we've achieved, the more we'll be able to attract the partners, the funding, and, most important, the members to achieve even more. We're working hard at RI headquarters to be sure that Rotary gets that recognition. But it can't all happen in Evanston. We need you to get the word out through your clubs and in your communities about what Rotary is and what we do. We need to be sure that our clubs are ready for the moment when polio is finally eradicated – so that when people who want to do good see that Rotary is a place where they can change the world, every Rotary club is ready to give them that opportunity.

We know that if we want to see Rotary Serving Humanity even better in the years ahead, we'll need more willing hands, more caring hearts, and more bright minds to move our work forward. We'll need clubs that are flexible, so that Rotary service will be attractive to younger members, recent retirees, and working people. We'll need to seek out new partnerships, opening ourselves more to collaborative relationships with other organizations.

Looking ahead, we also see a clear need to prioritize continuity in our leadership. We in Rotary are all playing on the same team, working toward the same goals. If we want to reach those goals together, we all have to move in the same direction – together.

Every day that you serve in Rotary, you have the opportunity to change lives. Everything you do matters; every good work makes the world better for us all. In this new Rotary year, we all have a new chance to change the world for the better, through Rotary Serving Humanity.
