BETH SHAUB FROM HARTVILLE CHOCOLATE FACTORY TO SPEAK THIS FRIDAY
My name is Beth (Barton) Shaub. My parents started the Hartville Chocolate Factory over 30 years ago, when I was still in middle school. While we have been making chocolate for several years, that is not all we do. We also manufacture chocolate making equipment, plastic molds and custom logo creations. I tell people that we do more with chocolate than Hershey does. I consider myself to be the "goodwill ambassador" of the company. I manage our Marketplace store, speak to groups such as yours and give tours at our new visitor's center, Cocoa Concepts.

In addition to working at the chocolate factory, I am also involved in children's ministry at the Celebration Worship Center. To work with chocolate and children, both, is a glorious thing. I am almost always surrounded by happy people, which is a wonderful blessing.

I was born and raised in Akron, attended college and lived in Pennsylvania for 16 years, then moved back to the area 12 years ago. I have a degree in French and Spanish, and hope to one day be certified to teach English as a Second Language. I have 3 children. Hannah, age 23, is a Moody Bible Institute graduate, with a degree in Ministry to Victims of Sexual Exploitation. She has traveled to India 3 times in the past 5 years, but currently works at a safe house for trafficked women here in Ohio. Benjamin, 19 years old, is studying Civil Engineering and performs with Rhythm and Roos, an acapella group, at the University of Akron. He just returned from Costa Rica a week ago. (On a side note, Ben was selected to attend RYLA camp in 2015 and thoroughly enjoyed the experience!) My youngest, Mary, is almost 16 years old and she attends Lake High School. She enjoys drawing, acting, writing and singing, as well as playing the flute and piano. The four of us love to take small trips together, albeit only for a day or two. We always seem to have fun!

One day, I would like to open my own business, one that creates an awareness, provides training and offers hope for "women in transition" around the world. It would feature homemade baked goods, chocolates, pastries and coffee, as well as handmade goods from organizations which reach out to women in the struggle.  This business would be a culmination of my life experiences, as well as a testimony to God's grace.

WINNING BID TO GET UP TO (3) PAUL HARRIS FELLOWS - JULY 21ST
In honor of District Governor Mike Raulin’s official visit to the Rotary Club of Canton on July 21st, our Rotary Foundation Committee will hold a special auction to raise money for The Rotary Foundation and increase the number of Paul Harris Fellows in our club.  Not only will the winning bidder receive foundation points toward a Paul Harris Fellow, the winning bid will be matched with a 1.5:1 Kicker

Example: If the winning bid is $100 then 250 points will be credited towards a Paul Harris Fellow (100 +150 Kicker Points = 250).

You may use your points toward your own Paul Harris Fellow or designate them to someone else. For example, be a Foundation Angel with a winning bid of $1,200 and you can name three Paul Harris Fellows (1,200 + 1,800  Kicker Points = 3,000). Only the highest bidder will be the winner of the Kicker Points.  Winning bidder will make his/her check out to The Rotary Foundation.  Visa & MasterCards are also acceptable.

Here’s a suggestion: form a group of three Rotarians with each putting in $400 ($1,200 total bid) and, if your group has the winning bid, then each can be named or can designate a Paul Harris Fellow.

(Please note that Kicker Points will not exceed a max of 2,000 points, regardless of the winning bid. This is the equivalent of two Paul Harris Fellows)

Come prepared to join in the fun, submit the winning bid, and support The Rotary Foundation!

ANNUAL GOLF OUTING SCHEDULED FOR FRIDAY, AUGUST 18TH AT THE SANCTUARY GOLF COURSE
On Friday, August 18, 2017, the Rotary Club of Canton will host its annual golf outing at The Sanctuary Golf Club located at 2017 Applegrove Street N.W., North Canton.  Each year the outing brings more than 75 golfers together from many local Rotary Clubs to participate in friendly competition, leaving only one Rotary Club with bragging rights for the next year.  This is a great day to bring guests or prospective members to see what Rotary is all about and meet some of the great people that are involved with Rotary.

As in the past, the golf outing will take the place of our regularly scheduled Friday meeting.  This means all Canton Rotarians are welcome to come for lunch, even if they are not planning to golf.  The cost for your lunch will be $15.00. Lunch will be served at noon with a shot gun start at 1:00 pm.

After lunch, those golfing will join their foursomes and participate in a scramble-format golf tournament.  Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in the scramble and for the longest drive, closest to the hole, and longest putt.

There will also be a putting contest, with the winner taking a BMW home for the weekend, courtesy of Cain BMW.

Please follow this LINK for a printable copy of the golf outing sign-up flyer.

SAVE THE DATE....3RD ANNUAL "OKTOBERFEST" TO BE HELD THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2017!

SAVE THE DATE...

On Thursday, September 21, 2017 from 4:30pm - 9 pm, the Rotary Club of Canton will hold our 3rd Annual Oktoberfest. The first two Canton Rotary Oktoberfest celebrations in 2015 and 2016 were very successful, with nearly 500 people in attendance at each. We look forward to an even larger Oktoberfest this year.

The 2017 Oktoberfest will include beer samplings from up to 12 local breweries, grilled brats with fixings, musical entertainment featuring Visinata (led by Johnnie Maier) and Donauschwabische Blaskapelle, a genuine German Oktoberfest band from Cleveland complete with dancing and singing. And we have a surprise guest for the official tapping of the Oktoberfest keg!

This Oktoberfest is The Rotary Club of Canton’s largest fundraiser for our Charitable Fund, which helps fund our many local charitable efforts throughout the year: Summer Food Backpack Program for Canton City School students; RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards); Interact Club; Rotary Scouts; Junior Achievement; the Philomatheon Society; Habitat for Humanity ECO; American Red Cross (Canton); Cystic Fibrosis Foundation; scholarships for Canton City School students; Stark County Public Library; Canton Symphony Orchestra; Canton Calvary Mission; First Tee of Canton; and more.

Sponsorships are available at various levels ranging from $100 to $5,000, and are all listed on this form: LINK . Sponsors will receive recognition in various ways, including on all social media websites, event T-shirts, promotional materials, and more.

For more information, contact the Rotary Club of Canton at 330-452-2882 or by email at info@cantonrotary.org.

RI PRESIDENTIAL MONTHLY MESSAGE

Ian H.S. Riseley
President 2017-18
July 2017

There are as many reasons to come to Rotary as there are Rotarians – maybe even a few more. But each of us has stayed in Rotary because it adds something to our own lives. Through Rotary, we are Making a Difference in the world; and the more involved we become, the more of a difference Rotary makes to each of us. Rotary challenges us to become better people: to become ambitious in the ways that matter, to strive for higher goals, and to incorporate Service Above Self into our daily lives.

What kind of difference Rotary clubs and individual Rotarians make through their service will always be their own decision. As an organization, we are guided by the three strategic priorities our Board has set in our strategic plan: to support and strengthen our clubs, to focus and increase our humanitarian service, and to enhance Rotary's public image and awareness.

In the year ahead, our clubs will have the support of a greatly augmented array of online tools, including a refreshed Rotary.org, a simplified Rotary Foundation grant application process, an improved My Rotary experience, and a rebuilt Rotary Club Central. As we look to strengthen our clubs, two specific challenges stand out in our membership: our gender balance and our average age. To keep our clubs strong, we need to build a membership that reflects the communities we serve and that will continue to develop knowledgeable leaders for generations to come.

For many years, one idea has stood at the heart of all our service: sustainability. Sustainable service means our work continues to have a positive impact long after Rotary's direct involvement has ended. We don't dig wells and walk away; we make sure communities can maintain and repair those wells. If we build a clinic, we make sure that clinic has a way to keep running without ongoing support from us. And when it comes to polio, we aren't working to contain it; we're working to end it.

Eradicating polio is the ultimate in sustainable service. It is an investment that will yield not just a long-lasting but a permanent benefit, on a global scale. It is and must remain our No. 1 priority until the job is done.

For 112 years, Rotary has made a difference to more lives, in more ways, than we can ever count or will ever know. Today, each of us bears a torch, its flame lit by Paul Harris, that has been passed forward from generation to generation, in Rotary: Making a Difference.
