Join your fellow Rotarians, the Mayors of Canton and Massillon, the team coaches and players, and guests for our annual Joint Canton-Massillon Rotary Meeting and pre-game festivities.  This year’s event will be emceed by Q92 radio announcers, Mark Milano and TJ Downing.  The Q92 team will provide in-depth coverage of the teams, conduct interviews and add color to our 'tailgating' event.  We will also have a featured segment on the new documentary, “Timeless Rivals”, which chronicles the long-standing rivalry between these schools and its impact on our area.

Mark Milano will be the moderator of this exciting event.  Mark has a long history in Northeast Ohio sports and is currently the sideline reporter for Q92 Radio.  He is also the co-host of the Sports Time Machine and the High School Jam Session.  He has been a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Festival committee since 1982 and has been inducted into the Stark County Softball Hall of Fame.  Mark is a life-long Stark County resident, has his B.A. degree from Kent State University, and has received the St. Thomas Aquinas Distinguished Alumni Award.  For his day job, Mark is a Senior Account Manager at Comp Management and is a recognized expert on workers' and unemployment compensations.   He resides in North Canton with his wife, Laura, and their two children.

Timothy “TJ” Downing is a Stark County native and graduate of GlenOak High School, where he starred in football as team captain and first-team All-Ohioan standout.  His love of the game took him to The Ohio State University, where he excelled as an offensive guard. As a member of this high-caliber team, TJ contributed to OSU's back-to-back Big Ten titles.  In the process, he was named a consensus 1st Team All Big Ten selection and a 2nd Team Associated Press All American and was signed as a free agent by the Arizona Cardinals.  TJ remains highly engaged in the local sports scene as a sportscaster on Q92 radio and 1310 WDPN AM as founder of Lineman School of America, a personal training academy for offensive and defensive lineman.  He is also the project manager at SANND Venture Capital.  TJ lives in Canton with his wife, Elizabeth, and their daughter, Rosie, and remains a 'larger-than-life' local sports personality.

OCTOBER CHARACTER CHAMPIONS

During the meeting on October 20, 2017, Rotarian Mike Brown introduced the McKinley Character Champion Award Winners for October, Emma Reardon and Deontae McCollum.

Emma Reardon is a great selection as a Character Champion. She is a leader, a scholar, a volunteer, and an integral part of many of the successes at McKinley Senior High School. Emma is very active at McKinley. She is currently president of Student Council and a member of Key Club, Speech and Debate, and a variety of other activities. She has been instrumental in maintaining McKinley’s Women of Honor organization. She participates in choir and has been involved in several sports while at McKinley. This year she is a captain of the cross country team and in the past she has been involved in both track and volleyball. In the classroom, Emma excels. She is currently ranked first in her class.  Her schedule of courses speaks to her desire to make herself an outstanding scholar as she takes multiple AP and CCP (College Credit Plus) courses. She does all of these things while also holding down a part time job at Taggart’s. She is interested in majoring in Sports Management, and, while she is applying to numerous places, she lists University of Cincinnati as her top choice.

Deontae McCollum is the perfect candidate for Rotary Club Character Champion. He is a model student that never shies away from a challenge. He has pushed himself academically as seen through his GPA of 4.44 and class rank of 10 out of 409. Since his junior year he has taken advanced and AP courses leading him to enrolling in CCP courses as a senior.  He is currently the Senior Class President for the class of 2018, and the captain of the varsity basketball team. He is involved in a wide range of extracurricular activities, such as National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Key Club Secretary, and President of the McKinley Men of Honor. He also volunteered for the 21st century after school program, tutoring younger aged students. Deonatae plans on becoming a nursing major and is currently undecided on his college choice. Deontae has excelled at whatever he does and is considered a leader among his peers. He will represent McKinley High School and Canton City School District well in his next phase of life.
