PASSING OF LONGTIME CANTON ROTARIAN, JOHN "PATRICK" GANNON
John “Patrick” Gannon passed away June 10, 2017 in the loving care of his wife of 45 years, Carol, after a 5 year illness with Pulmonary Hypertension. He spent those difficult years surrounded by family, daughter Erin (Douglas) Tolin, sons Michael Gannon and Mark (Kyla) Gannon and in the joyful presence of his grandsons Nathan, Connor and Gavin Tolin. His family and friends were so very special to him and he enjoyed a good talk, a great Steeler game and much laughter. Pat was born to John and Eleanor Gannon in 1949 in Carnegie, PA where he spent his young years in the South Hills with brothers, Thomas and Mark (Debbie) Gannon and with sisters Maureen (Tom) Koppenhaver and Mary Lee Gannon. He graduated in 1967 from Chartiers Valley High School loving all things that spoke of Steelers, Penguins and Pirates. Pat’s college years were spent at Walsh University graduating in 1971 with a BA in Business Administration that gave him the knowledge and ability to create successful technology companies and make lifelong friends. In 1991 he was awarded the Walsh University Outstanding Alumni Award. It was at Walsh that Pat and Carol met and married in 1971. They raised their family in Canton and returned to the Walsh cornfield that they met to build their retirement home. Pat’s business achievements were many and presently served clients in JP Gannon Insurance. His past businesses were LightSpeed Technologies, Ed Tech Services, Connecting Point/ Computer World, Graphic Enterprises and ADP Dealer Services. Always involved in giving back to the community, he proudly served on the Board of Directors for Graphic Enterprises and Computer World and on the Board of Trustees of Community Services of Stark County, Walsh University Alumni Board of Trustees, Canton Rotary, HOF Mayor Breakfast, Game Day Luncheon and Coleman Behavioral Health and Family Services. Pat’s caring spirit was known to his family and friends full of compassion, integrity, laughter and a zest for life. There wasn’t an entrepreneur who worked so hard and lived life with integrity and a generous spirit. Friends may call Thursday from 12-1 p.m. at Christ the Servant Parish followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 1p.m. with family friend, Monsignor Lewis Gaetano as celebrant. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Caring Voice Coalition 8249 Meadowbridge Road Mechanicsville, VA 23116 or CommQuest (Community Services of Stark County) 625 Cleveland Ave NW, Canton, OH 44702.

UPDATE ON THE MILITARY FAMILY CENTER FROM PDG MEENA PATEL
President Craig Young received the following email from PDG Meena Patel in regards to the Military Family Center. You may follow this LINK to view the powerpoint which was attached to her email.  PDG Meena writes:

"Dear Past Presidents,
Rotary Clubs of R.I. District 6650,

This is PDG Meena Patel. I cannot thank you enough for your patience and your trust in me and my team in establishing Military Family Center for our veterans and their families. There were a total of 30 clubs, 28 from our district and 2 from India, whose support was invaluable in this Global Grant project..

If you all remember, as District 6650 Rotarians, we started serving Gold Star military families in 2012 and we went the extra mile with your resources to serve Blue Star families in 2013. And when we planned a Global Grant to establish a Military Center at Solid Rock with Equine therapy, Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy and Clinical therapy, we faced an obstacle with Building Codes and had to postpone our grand opening in September 2015. We eventually need to look for another Riding Center and convince them about the importance of our project, then get them on board.

Our dream is coming true now. In fact the failure at Solid Rock turned out to be a blessing in disguise, in the sense that three reputable organizations are now coming together for this collaborative effort: Rotary District 6650, Pegasus Farm (For Equine Assisted Therapy), and Walsh University (other therapies).

All the equipment is provided through our Global Grant amounting to $112,940.00. Thanks to all of you.

Six other Foundations in the Stark County have come on board and will be contributing $1,000,000.00, the amount that will help to purchase the property and set up the center. Pegasus, being 501-C-3 entity, will own the property and will look after it, as well as oversee the Equine assisted program. Walsh University being involved is really the icing on the cake. We Rotarians, with our valuable resources, will always be there to support the center and continue to serve the veterans and the military families.

We will be in touch with more information for you. We will have a special open house for Rotarians as soon as the purchase of the property is completed.

I am enclosing a power point presentation of the project. Please thank all your club members. Please let me know if you have any questions.

With Warm Regards,
Thanking you again,

Meena Patel
Centennial District Governor,
Past DRFC Chair and Past Grants Chair,
Past Community Service Chair,

ROTARY WORLD GATHERS IN ATLANTA TO CELEBRATE 100 YEARS

2017 Rotary Convention offers five days of inspiring speakers, exciting events, and opportunities to connect with club members from around the world

Rotary International
By Arnold R. Grahl

Rotary’s biggest get-together of the year is underway. More than 40,000 members from 174 countries have gathered in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, to renew friendships, find inspiration, and celebrate The Rotary Foundation’s 100 years of Doing Good in the World.

The 2017 Rotary Convention’s opening ceremony took place Sunday at the Georgia World Congress Center, and included the presentation of the centennial bell. This special bell was forged at a 1,000-year-old foundry in Agnone, Italy, in honor of the Foundation’s centennial. The presentation marked the start of a five-day centennial celebration, which includes a book signing, a photo exhibit, and an enormous birthday party.

During the opening session, Georgia Governor Nathan Deal welcomed Rotary to Atlanta, and RI President John F. Germ emphasized opportunities for making connections during the convention.

“I hope that, as busy as all of you are going to be, you still make time for what might just be the most important part of every convention: meeting new people, and getting to know your fellow Rotarians,” Germ said.

Indian philanthropist Rajashree Birla, chair of the Aditya Birla Centre for Community Initiatives and Rural Development named for her late husband, pledged another $1 million for Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio. Birla has already contributed more than $7.2 million to the effort.

Over the next four days, attendees will also hear from Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, about progress on our pledge to rid the world of polio. Ashton Kutcher, cofounder of Thorn, will be part of a panel discussion on human trafficking and the need to end modern slavery.

Other speakers include WWE Superstar, actor, and Rotary polio ambassador John Cena and golf icon Jack Nicklaus.

Monday through Wednesday, members will have the chance to attend breakout sessions where they’ll find inspiration for new service projects, polish their leadership expertise, and learn skills for building stronger clubs. Find the completebreakout session schedule  and slides from workshops.

Fellowship is the biggest part of any Rotary Convention, and the week wouldn’t be complete without Host Organization Committee  events welcoming attendees to Atlanta, showing off the city, and giving members a chance to get together and socialize. Check the committee's site for the latest information.

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned this year, it’s that when two Rotarians get together, and start talking about service--there’s just no telling where that might lead,” said Germ.
