DECEMBER CHARACTER COUNTS CHAMPS
During the meeting on December 8, 2017, Rotarian Mike Brown introduced the McKinley High School Character Champion Award winners for December, Oni Jones and Shawn Monahan.

ONI JONES
Oni Jones is a great selection as a Character Champion. She is a leader, a scholar, and a great person. She has been on Honor Roll since freshman year, she has lettered 3 years for the cross-countryteam, and three years for the band. Not only is she great in the classroom, she has been amazing in extracurricular activities as well. She has held lead positions in four musicals: Mary Poppins, Godspell, The Wiz, and 42nd street. She has been accepted into National Honor Society, she holds a leadership role in McKinley Women of Honor, and she was awarded the Academic Award for the cross-country team. We are very proud of Oni at McKinley High School, as she is a very kind and respectful person. She plans to attend either Kenyon College or Oberlin College, and wants to major in the field of art.

SHAWN MONAHAN
Shawn Monahan is a perfect candidate for Rotary Club Character Champion. He is a standout student who thrives in every situation. He has pushed himself academically as seen through his GPA of 4.53 and class rank of 5 out of 431. Shawn has an impressive streak of maintaining Honor Roll (4.0 GPA) for 8 consecutive years. Since his freshman year he has taken advanced and AP courses, leading to his enrollment in college credit plus courses as a senior. He has won an Urban League award given to an outstanding student ending their 8th grade year, and has also won the Presidential Academic Award, been named Career & Tech Male junior of the year, was a semi-finalist in Ohio for the US Presidential Scholar Program, and is an active Church Member at Holy Assumption Orthodox Church. He is involved in a wide range of extracurricular activities such as National Honor Society President, National Technical Honors Society, Varsity Tennis, Marching Band, Pep Band, Jazz Band, and Orchestra. Shawn plans on being an Engineering major at Akron University. Shawn has excelled at whatever he does and is considered a leader among his peers. He will represent McKinley High School and Canton City School District well in his next phase of life.

CHARITABLE FUND DRIVE UNDERWAY!
It’s that time of year when we are in the midst our Annual Charitable Fund Drive! As is customary, I will be making a weekly plea from the podium for your participation.

The Charitable Fund is vital to our Club’s philanthropic endeavors. With this fund, we support projects such as Polio Plus, the Philomatheon Society, RYLA, Rotary Scouts, Interact and Scholarships. This year we also started the Backpack Project under the charitable fund. It is important that we continue to support projects in the community where we work, live and play.

I am not going to be focusing on the goal amount – instead I’m hoping for 100% participation. It’s not important how much you give, just that you give something. Please consider your gift with a generous spirit.  **Please make checks payable to the Canton Rotary Charitable Fund
