GOLF OUTING RESULTS
Another great day! The Rotary Club of Canton held their 2016 golf outing on Friday, August 19, 2016.  It’s hard to say anyone was a loser between the great Old Carolina BBQ lunch and the fun that was had at our new venue, The Sanctuary Golf Club.

However, there were winners, and those winners deserve recognition.  After the dust settled and all 81 golfers were accounted for, we had a winner:  In first place, the team from North Canton – Brent Fatzinger, Dennis Huffman, Dan Clay, and Bryan Bober.  In second place was the team of Drew Pelger, Dan Pelger, Derek Gordon, and Roger Evans.  In third place was the team of Dave Schrade, Vern Dale, Mark Morena, and Ron Wilkof.

Closest to the pin was won by Shawn Dougherty on hole #2 and by Glen Reichenbach on hole #11.  Long putt was won by Dave Schrade on the 18th hole.  Both of the Men’s long drive holes were won by Dennis Huffman.  Women’s long drive was won by Tiffany Schmitt on hole #7 and Denise Burton on hole #14.  Finally, Patrick Schultz was the winner of the putting contest.  If you see a young man cruising around Canton in a BMW convertible with a big smile on his face, it’s likely Patrick.  A big thank you to Cain BMW for donating the car for a weekend.

In addition to all the wonderful memories that were created during the outing, we managed to raise more than $1,500 for the Club.  Much of this money was raised through the generosity of our hole sponsors.  Thank you for all your support!

See you on the golf course.

LOUISIANA STATE OF EMERGENCY: "$50.00 CHALLENGE"
The catastrophic flood devastating Louisiana is now the worst natural disaster to strike the United States since Hurricane Sandy. There have been 40,000 homes damaged as a result of the flooding.  To repair these homes much work will need to be done like removing existing drywall and plywood before mold sets in.

As we state at the opening of each and every Rotary meeting the Rotary Club of Canton is "the finest Rotary Club in the World". Now is the time to prove this statement.  Let us all consider making a donation no matter how big or small to help the people of Louisiana.  I would like to challenge each and every Rotarian of the Rotary Club of Canton to match my donation of $50.00.  Can you imagine if each and every one of us made a donation just exactly how many residents of Louisiana we could help?

The Rotary Club of Salem is spear heading this humanitarian project and all checks are to be made payable to the Salem Rotary Foundation. We ask that your contributions be sent to: the Rotary Club of Canton, 203 Cleveland Avenue N.W., Canton, OH 44702.  The deadline date to make a contribution will be Friday, September 23, 2016.  At this time, the Rotary office will forward all contributions to the Salem Rotary Club. Tax receipts will be issued for personal donations.  Together we can make a difference.

WEEKLY MEETING NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
At our weekly meeting on August 26, 2016, Vice President Michelle Mullaly covered the meeting for President Craig Young.  VP Michelle welcomed the members and guests to the meeting.  VP Michelle then thanked August Speaker Chair Mark Rojek for his wonderful speakers for the month!

Sergeant-at-Arms Bob Matthews provided the Invocation.

Secretary Suzette Matthews then welcomed the following guests to the meeting:  Chylece Head and Jim Ondrus (both Jackson Rotarians).

New member Chad Minor then presented this week's Rotafact:

"The 2016 Summer Olympics have ended, but did you ever think about how much Rotarians and the Olympians have in common?
They both have a shared emphasis on fostering peace and goodwill…and have joined forces in past history.

Did you know that their relationship dates back to the 1932 Olympic games in Los Angeles, when the Rotary Club of Los Angeles hosted members of the International Olympic Committee and the Olympic Athletes.

The 1932 October issue of Rotarian Magazine noted: “Here are two great international organizations (Rotary and the Olympic Committee) whose efforts are ever for peace met in international fellowship.”

Still today, Rotarians and Olympians are important ambassadors in efforts to create understanding, tolerance and peace around the world one good work at a time.

As a Canton Rotarian, know that YOU are making a difference and are part of an international organization that is building goodwill and PEACE in the world!"

The "Happy Buck" news was then provided by the following Rotarians:

  • Becky Clark: $1 to make you smile!
  •
  • Virginia Neutzling: $1 to recognize the Canton Brewery launch of concert series “long overdue” article in the Canton Repository earlier this month. Also a shout-out to Dave Beule (Canton Brewing) for his part in making it happen and in Rotary’s support for the Market Square project.
  •
  • Jim Molnar: $1 to thank everyone for the outpouring of support for the CASA volunteer fire victim with a gift card (from Rotary) and for the new bike (courtesy of Paul White).
  •

  •
  • Dave Beule: $1 to cover the good PR that Virginia shared about Canton Brewing in her Happy Buck announcement (and to let everyone know that he will also be providing beverage support to Mike Abbott’s participation in the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank activities).
  •
  • Mark Clendenin: $1 because he is happy his Jackson Rotary friends were sitting beside him and another $1 because one son is out of college and one is in college.
  •
  • Suzette Matthews: $1 to say great job to Nick Perini on the Annual Golf Event last Friday at The Sanctuary Golf Club. A great time was had by all!

Golf Chairman Nick Perini then announced the results of the annual golf outing held on August 19th.  (*See story above for results).

VP Michelle then announced a "Save the Date" for Wednesday, October 5, 2016.  The Rotary Club of Canton will host a Fellowship Meeting at The Canton Brewing Company.  A Cornhole tournament with the opportunity to socialize with members and the chance to introduce potential new members is the objective to this new endevour.  This is also a great opportunity to receive a makeup towards your attendance as well! Look for more details to come.

Committee member Drew Pelger then brought the members up to date on the upcoming "Oktoberfest".  Tickets are now available for purchase for the September 17th event.  You may go online to make your purchase by visiting the Canton Rotary website.  VP Michelle then reminded the committee members there would be a brief meeting immediately following the regular Rotary meeting.
