PASSING OF LONGTIME ROTARIAN JIM LOCKSHIN
James Daniel (Jim) Lockshin(1924 - 2017)

James (Jim) Daniel Lockshin 1924-2017 born May 27, 1924 in Youngstown, Ohio. First son of Mary (Richstone) and Nathan Lockshin. Jim moved to Canton in 1940 and graduated from Lehman High School in 1942. He attended The Ohio State Universitybefore joining the US Army (ASTP) during World War II. After the War Jim returned to OSU to finish his degree in Business Administration. Immediately following his graduation, Jim joined his father in Canton at Golden Age Distributing Company on Cherry St. N.E.

In 1964, with the new arrival of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Jim decided to change name of his Company to FAME BEVERAGE. Jim was a vital part of acquiring new beers, craft beers, wines, specialty beverages, distributors, and territories at Fame Beverage throughout the years until its sale in 2007. He was loved and respected by all his customers and employees, many who had long careers at Fame Beverage. He especially loved feeding his crew and many trips back from Columbus meant taking a detour to Waldo, Ohio to pick up a loaf of Baloney from the G & R Tavern., and a stop at Shislers Cheese on route 30. Professionally he was a member of Temple Israel, Temple Israel Brotherhood, Canton Rotary (Paul Harris Fellow), Ohio Beer and Wine Association Board Member, Stark County Restaurant Association, Past president of the Ozark 102 Infantry Division Alumni Association, member of McKinley Lodge #431 F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Canton, Hall of Fame Luncheon Club, and Honorary member Phoenician Club of Stark County. Last year he was awarded the French Legion of Honor for his service in World War II.

Our Father never met a Stranger. He was friends from all walks of life and was nice and respectful to everyone. Many wait staff all over the Fame Beverage marketing area still remember his token Silver Dollars he would give them. He helped many people in many ways, and his kindness never expected any recognition.

Jim was married to his love of his life, Shirley (Goldenfeld) for almost 68 years; father of three children, Barbara (Bob) Ferne, Susan (Jack) Desarno, and David (Marjorie) Lockshin; eight grandchildren, Michael Desarno, Stacy Desarno Daniel, Sara Ferne Kanfer, Rachel Ferne Martinson, Samuel Lockshin, Jane Lockshin, Paul Lockshin, and Madeline Lockshin; one great-grandchild, Nathan Daniel. He was proceeded in death by his brother, Jerrold Lockshin.

Special consideration must be given to his incredible care givers who attended to him above and beyond, Mabel, Camille, Amber, Madison, Demico, Jaylanna, Sharon, Harlan, Brandon and Mercy Hospice.

Jim had an excellent sense of humor, wit and loved quotes. Some of the most notable were:

Give me an honest day work and don't lie.
Lead follow or get out of the way
I been here twice the first and the last
When Life gives you, lemons make lemonade.
You have two ears and one mouth use them accordingly.

Funeral Services will be held TODAY at 11 a.m. at Temple Israel with Rabbi Jon Adland and Rabbi John Spitzer officiating. Interment in North Lawn Cemetery. Donations made to the Lockshin Goldenfeld Religious School Endowment fund at Temple Israel or the charity of your choice.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY PROJECT
On Saturday, July 29, 2017, seven Canton Rotarians showed up for hard labor, but great fellowship, at the Habitat for Humanity/Pocket Park Project located at 1825 Edwards Ave. N.E., Canton, Ohio 44705. These Rotarians, along with Mark Clendenin's wife, Tracy, built a stone wall around the flagpole, cleaned the grounds, then moved 20,000 pounds of rubberized mulch in wheelbarrows, spreading it around the whole area.

A BIG thank you goes out to Phil Lattavo (who was the first to arrive and the last to leave), Dean Wallace, Mark and Tracy Clendenin, Steve Fettman, PP Fritz Spring, PP Craig Young and PP Rick Taylor.  Each Rotarian will receive a makeup for their hard labor and efforts on this day!

(Editor's note: Please notice the relatively advanced ages of these Rotarians. We would LOVE to see some of you younger folks out there getting dirty and sweaty....and having fun, too!)

ANNUAL GOLF OUTING SCHEDULED FOR FRIDAY, AUGUST 18TH AT THE SANCTUARY GOLF COURSE
On Friday, August 18, 2017, the Rotary Club of Canton will host its annual golf outing at The Sanctuary Golf Club located at 2017 Applegrove Street N.W., North Canton.  Each year the outing brings more than 75 golfers together from many local Rotary Clubs to participate in friendly competition, leaving only one Rotary Club with bragging rights for the next year.  This is a great day to bring guests or prospective members to see what Rotary is all about and meet some of the great people that are involved with Rotary.

As in the past, the golf outing will take the place of our regularly scheduled Friday meeting.  This means all Canton Rotarians are welcome to come for lunch, even if they are not planning to golf.  The cost for your lunch will be $15.00. Lunch will be served at noon with a shot gun start at 1:00 pm.

After lunch, those golfing will join their foursomes and participate in a scramble-format golf tournament.  Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in the scramble and for the longest drive, closest to the hole, and longest putt.

There will also be a putting contest, with the winner taking a BMW home for the weekend, courtesy of Cain BMW.

On Thursday, September 21, 2017 from 4:30pm - 9 pm, the Rotary Club of Canton will hold our 3rd Annual Oktoberfest.
