In last week's edition of the "Weekly Meeting News and Announcements", we provided some incorrect information. In the paragraph regarding the presentation of the $2,500.00 check to our speaker, Georgia Paxos, to help with loop induction system at the Canton Palace Theatre for those with hearing problems, we incorrectly said that, in addition to a grant from District 6650, matching funds came from the Canton Rotary Charitable Fund.
In fact, the funds from the Rotary Club of Canton was a matching donation from our Canton Rotary Endowment Fund.

 Brent May was appointed as superintendent of the Plain Local School District on August 2, 2010.
May, a lifelong educator, began his career in Plain Local as a fourth grade teacher at Pleasant View School for the Arts. In 2000 he accepted a position as an assistant principal at Dodge Intermediate School in the Twinsburg City School District. While
at Dodge he supervised the special education department and coordinated guidance services for students in grades 4-6.
May returned to Plain in 2002 to serve as assistant principal at Taft Middle School,where he supervised the special education department and led the implementation of an inclusion model for grades 6-8. He also implemented a block middle-school schedule and coordinated common planning for all staff, focusing on collaboration to better serve the needs of all children.
In 2004 May moved to GlenOak High School as assistant principal, instituting the first on-line learning opportunity for all student in grades 7-12 using the Florida Virtual School Curriculum. He also coordinated state-mandated testing services to all students and was involved in the redesign of GlenOak High School into smaller learning communities. With the opening of the new GlenOak High School Community Campus
in 2006, May transitioned into academy principal for the Business and Human Services Academy.
In December of 2006 the Plain Local Schools Board of Education named Brent May as the new Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.
May received his Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from Malone College in 1994 and his Masters Degree in Elementary and Secondary Administration from Ashland University in 2000. He began his career in Plain as a fourth grade teacher at Pleasant View School for the Arts, also serving as an assistant coach at GlenOak for baseball, football and wrestling. May is currently pursuing his doctorate degree at The University of Akron.
May is a member of: the Plain Township Rotary; Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce; Buckeye Association of School Administrators; and a coach for the Holly Hills Baseball League.
May and his wife, Becky, reside in Plain Township with their three children: Logan, Emily and Zach.

 Past President Dan Matthews has invited Canton Rotarians to send in their favorite Rotary memories during our Club's 100 year celebration. Our first "memory" has been presented by 44 year member of the Rotary Club of Canton, Frank Fleischer.
Frank had this memory to share, "One of the funny things that I remember is back when we met at Mergus. We knew that whenever anyone from Timken was going to speak to the club we would get a great lunch. That meeting we could be assured that Frank would serve us a sirloin for lunch. Guaranteed!!"

If you cannot attend this Friday's meeting, please contact the Rotary office to make arrangements to stop by and pick your tickets up. This will help cut down on the expense of mailing them out.

 It is with great pleasure we announce the Rotary Club of Canton's 100th anniversary celebration! This event will be held at the beautiful Historic Onesto in downtown Canton. The date is Saturday, April 11, 2015 at 6 PM.
Celebrating any 100th birthday is a very big milestone! This will be a wonderful opportunity to invite potential new Rotarians to an event which will not only showcase an organization providing 100 years worth of "Service Above Self" to its community, but will also provide an opportunity to experience a bit of Canton history, the former Onesto Hotel.
Promoting and attending this 100 year celebration event is an honor for each and every Canton Rotarian. Let us all take pride in a 100 years of "Service Above Self"!

Sign-up sheets will be available during the Friday meetings to volunteer for the Annual Pancake Breakfast. This year's event will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2015.
Take a minute to look at your calendar and block some time off on that day to volunteer for the Rotary Club of Canton's largest fundraiser. We will need volunteers for set-up on Friday, March 13th (immediately following our regular Rotary meeting) or during the two shifts on 'Pancake Saturday'.

 Youth Exchange Chairperson, Amy Mustafaga, is asking Rotarians to consider opening their home to our current Youth Exchange Student, Gui Guilherme Morgado. Gui is attending North Canton Hoover High School. Amy states we would need a Host family for just a couple months to get Gui through this school year.
If are interested in helping this young man or if you know of someone who would be interested in becoming a Host family, please contact Amy Mustafaga at (330) 837-4555 or the Rotary office at (330) 452-2882.

 Celebrating a Century of Service…Remembrances of Mike Gregorek, President 1992-93
Our club had about 320 members during this year. To promote sponsoring new members, we encouraged current members to invite prospective members to attend our weekly meetings as guests.
Our average attendance was between 85 and 88%. Good attendance was promoted through fellowship, camaraderie and programs of local, national and international interest.
Weekly meetings were held at the Hilton Hotel in downtown Canton. Some memorable programs were the Easter/Passover speakers, Pastor Bill Harvey and Rabbi John Spitzer; the grandson of John Naismith, the inventor of Basketball; Congressman Ralph Regula; the Ohio Chamber of Commerce President; the Stark Development Board; Mayor Dick Watkins; sportscaster Joe Tait; Indians manager Mike Hargrove; and our South Carolina program.
During this year we provided aid to Hurricane Andrew victims in Florida, we hosted a Group Study Exchange Team from Germany, and we donated $14,856 to help restore running water in Haiti.
Pancake Day netted an excellent profit of $20,182 for our club to fund service projects.
Our club won a number of awards at the District Conference in April and we awarded 15 Paul Harris Fellows during the year.
I was privileged to represent our club at the RI Convention in Orlando, FL and I was most impressed by the great fellowship among Rotarians from around the world.
I agreed to serve as our club’s President because one of my primary Rotary mentors, PP and PDG Joe Guenther taught me early on that when you are asked to do something in Rotary, such as serving as president, you were forbidden from saying “No”. So I said, “Yes”.
Most of all I enjoyed the good fellowship among our members. Our world is better off, both locally and globally, because of the good work that Rotary does.
Jan (Van Nostran) Baker served as the President’s Administrator during this year from the club’s offices in the Bliss Tower.
I was sponsored into Rotary by Dr. David Montgomery and I, in turn, sponsored Dr. Fred Whittier, both fine Rotarians.
Without doubt, like so many others would say, Joe Guenther helped make the road in Rotary smoother for me. He was an excellent role model of what being a good Rotarian really means.
Bringing women into Rotary has provided a great benefit to Rotary. They have brought a new energy and enthusiasm to the service work done by Rotary both locally and globally.
More than anything I enjoy the camaraderie of our members and I also have enjoyed attending many other club meetings as “make-ups”. This is a great way to meet new Rotarians and gain a broader appreciation for Rotary around the world. Rotarians are always welcome to attend any Rotary Club meeting anywhere, anytime.
It is important for people to understand that Rotary may offer the best opportunity to bring about greater fellowship and harmony to our world through service to others, above self-interest.
I think in the future Rotary may become less personal if more activities are conducted on the internet.
Finally, I remember that even though my professional life was on a somewhat downward slope for a while, I was able to keep in touch with our club members when I was away from the club for a few years. This connection with Rotary and Rotarians meant a great deal to me.

 At our weekly meeting on February 20, 2015, Past President Dan Matthews continued with his 100 year celebration game of knowledge based on the history from Canton Rotary's Past Presidents. His "contestants" were Ben Seeley, Rebecca Marchino and Bruce Hale. Each participant answered a question pertaining to this week's story in the Rotogram regarding the 100 years of Canton Rotary. Each participant won a $10.00 gift certificate to Kozmo's Grille. Dan thanked Rotarian Rick Taylor for the generous donation of gift certificates to be used as prizes.
Dean Wallace then took to the podium to give an update on the Pancake Breakfast. He stated members could pick up their pancake tickets at a Friday meeting or they could contact the Rotary office to make arrangements to receive them. Dean also stated that sign-up sheets were available for members to sign up to volunteer for our biggest fundraiser of the year.
President Elect Paul White then reminded members about the "Save the Date" on April 11, 2015, for the Rotary Club of Canton's 100 Year Celebration being held at the beautifully restored Historic Onesto in downtown Canton. Further details to follow at a later date.
Shawn Dougherty gave the members information on the paperwork located at each lunch table, including a letter explaining details of the Health Screen & Wellness Fair which will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at McKinley Sr. High School. Attached to this letter were five flyers pertaining to the preventative health screening options available that day from 6:30 AM - 11:30 AM. He asked each member to distribute these flyers at their church, doctor or dentist office, pharmacy, or other places where older community members might see them. This will help spread the word on this project to our target audience.
Vice President Craig Young provided information regarding the new format for nominating the next Rotarian of the Year. Nomination forms were provided to each member attending the meeting and a ballot container was made available. Please click here to proceed to the Nominating form if you are unable to attend a Friday meeting. Nominating forms must be submitted no later than March 27, 2015. The new "Rotarian of the Year" will be recognized at the 100 Year Celebration on April 11, 2015.
Club Secretary Amanda Tietze welcomed the following guests to our meeting: Dianne Clary and Andy Harms.
The "Happy Bucks" news was then provided by the following Rotarians: Dave Beule said the Canton Brewing Company's Speak Easy is now open; Denny Fulmer was happy he was getting on a plane and heading to Florida the next day; Rick Taylor was happy it was only 30 degrees in Florida since Denny was getting on a plane to head there; Dan Matthews was thrilled that Dave Beule's new business was open because he personally nominated Dave as the next sponsor for his trivia game; and Shawn Dougherty was beyond happy that his daughter had been accepted to all four Law schools to which she had applied.
The following Rotarians will receive a makeup for attending the Executive Board meeting held on February 17, 2015: President Tom Clevenger, President Elect Paul White, Vice President Craig Young, Secretary Amanda Tietze and Treasurer Dave Schrade.

 Please mark your calendar for Saturday, March 14, 2015, for the Rotary Club of Canton's Annual Pancake Breakfast, Pick Your Prize Raffle AND Health Screening Events! This year's event will once again be held at McKinley High School. The Pancake Breakfast will include: Pancakes, Sausage, Orange Juice, Coffee and Milk.
Please note: Chairperson Dean Wallace and his committee have decided to offer an incentive to other charitable groups to sell tickets to our Pancake Breakfast! These groups will be paid $2.00 for every ticket they sell! So, if you have a church group, Scout troop, sports team, or favorite charity that would like to earn a little extra money, please let Dean know. Information and sign up sheets will be available at this week's meeting.
A Pick Your prize Raffle will be displayed with many wonderful items to choose from! You can purchase tickets the day of the event and then decide what prizes you want to win by placing your ticket(s) into the corresponding bag in front of the item you are interested in. You will not need to be present to win.
The breakfast and raffle combine to make the Rotary's largest fundraiser and help fund our many local charitable efforts through the year, including:

- Foster Parenting
- Rotary Youth Exchange program
- Interact Club
- Rotary Youth Leadership Awards
- Junior Achievement In a Day
