 Tena Wilson, executive director of the Stark County District Library, changed course in the middle of her career. After working in marketing and sales for Matthews Specialty Vehicles of Greensboro, North Carolina, and OBS Specialty Vehicles in Canton, Ohio, she returned to school for her Masters of Library Science.
She quickly rose through the ranks in libraries, serving first as the Young Adult Programmer for the Stark County District Library - Lake Community Branch, then moving to Cleveland Public Library where she served successively as a Branch Manager, Marketing and Communications Administrator and Public Services West Team Manager, before leaving to become director of the Winnetka-Northfield Library District in Winnetka, Illinois.
She returned home to lead the Stark County District Library as executive director in September 2012, where she hit the ground running, leading the library through a successful political campaign to pass a new operating levy and secure the library’s funding.
She is a member of the Ohio Library Council, American Library Association, and Public Library Association. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Secondary Education from Tennessee Temple University and a Master of Library and Information Science from Kent State University.
She volunteers in the community as a board member of the Canton Symphony Orchestra. She is a member of the Rotary Club of Canton. She is a founding member of Women’s Impact and chair of their RENEW book club. She is a graduate of the 27th Signature Class of Leadership Stark County and now serves on the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Stark County Board.
She and her husband John have two daughters and are grandparents to two beautiful boys, Nathan and Cole.

The year was 1916-1917…”Did You Know?”
- The poor attendance of Canton Rotarians became a concern of the directors. Members were notified they would be dropped if they didn’t attend at least once a month!
2. The YMCA and the Boys Camp for underprivileged boys at Turkeyfoot Lake continued to be major interests for our young club.
3. The Red Cross became a new club charity with a donation of $100.

 KIDS BUILDING HOPE - During the years of Fritz Spring's and Jack Barkan’s presidencies, my granddaughter, Carly Zalenski, a 12 year old Jackson student, was supported by these Rotarians and the Canton Rotary Board of Directors to build a school in Vietnam. Carly organized a non- profit organization (Kids Building Hope) to reach out to the community. Carly, with the support of our leaders, visited many Rotary clubs in our District to raise funds and to obtain a matching grant to provide the funding for an elementary school for 500 children in the Mekong Delta area of Vietnam.
Carly, her family, and PDG Larry Warren made the journey to Vietnam to dedicate the school. The overwhelming success of the project motivated Carly to build another school in Vietnam. Two years later, with the help of her sister Abby, another school was built in the Dalat region where countless children are being educated.
The Rotary Club of Canton was the recipient of the best international project of the year by District 6650. The project was also highlighted in the Rotarian Magazine and also the Readers Digest.
As a side note, Carly is graduating this year from Ohio Wesleyan University. With the support of the university, she interned in Vietnam last summer and has made 3 mission trips to El Salvador. She was recognized by OWU with the Bishop’s award for International service. Carly has accepted a teaching position with “Teach America” after graduation. She often thanks Canton Rotary for the path she has taken of “Service above Self”.

.jpg) Fellow Canton Rotarians, today is the LAST CHANCE to volunteer for our Rotary 'JA-In-A-Day' program at Harter School, next Wednesday, March 11th!
We will be teaching ‘JA Our Community’ along with our friends from Jackson Rotary. This program teaches 2nd graders about business and jobs in our community, working for a wage, taxes and how they pay for government services and workers, and how money moves through a community.
The kids LOVE this program!
Time commitment is 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM.

 During our meeting on February 27, 2015, Canton Rotarian Dean Gogolewski introduced the McKinley Student Character Champion Award Winner for February, 2015, Maria Mejia.
McKinley Sr. High School had this to say about Maria: "Maria is a dedicated senior who has pushed herself to enroll in rigorous courses, including advanced and AP classes. She represents McKinley as a member of the Speech Team and has qualified for state competition. She is a leader and a mentor within her school and is respected by her peers. She also maintains employment to assist the needs of her family. Maria is worthy of this recognition due to her character, leadership, scholarship and service to others."

 During our meeting on February 27, 2015, Canton Rotarian Dean Gogolewski introduced the Timken Student Character Champion Award Winner for February 2015, Bethany Rouse.
Timken High School had this to say about Bethany: "Bethany could be the poster child for trustworthiness and responsibility. She is in her 4th year of band and her 2nd as section leader. She is in all seasons of sports, running both cross country and track, and is on the varsity bowling team and the Academic Challenge Team.
She was inducted as a junior into the Timken Chapter of the National Honor Society and is on track to graduate high school along with an Associates Degree from Stark State."

 At our weekly meeting on February 27, 2015, President Tom Clevenger introduced Canton Rotarian Dean Gogolewski. Dean presented the Character Champions from Timken Sr. High School and McKinley Sr. High School to the members. (Please see story above regarding Character Champions).
Past President Dan Matthews continued with his 100 year celebration game of knowledge with this week's game called "Bring Home the Big Bone". This week's contestants were Julia Dick, Mike Rogers and Dave Ewing, who were chosen because they had a large dog at home. Each contestant received a "big bone" as a gift for answering a question correctly. This week's sponsor was PBS Animal Health Products (go figure!)
Past President Rick Taylor informed the members of the upcoming JA "Done in a Day" (please see story elsewhere in this newsletter).
Vice President Craig Young once again reminded the members to take the opportunity to nominate who they think would make a good "Rotarian of the Year". The deadline to submit your nomination is March 27th. Please click here if you would like to download a Nomination Form.

 It is with great pleasure we announce the Rotary Club of Canton's 100th anniversary celebration! This event will be held at the beautiful Historic Onesto in downtown Canton. The date is Saturday, April 11, 2015 at 6 PM.
Celebrating any 100th birthday is a very big milestone! This will be a wonderful opportunity to invite potential new Rotarians to an event which will not only showcase an organization providing 100 years worth of "Service Above Self" to its community, but will also provide an opportunity to experience a bit of Canton history, the former Onesto Hotel.
Promoting and attending this 100 year celebration event is an honor for each and every Canton Rotarian. Let us all take pride in a 100 years of "Service Above Self"!

 Please mark your calendar for Saturday, March 14, 2015, for the Rotary Club of Canton's Annual Pancake Breakfast, Pick Your Prize Raffle AND Health Screening Events! This year's event will once again be held at McKinley High School. The Pancake Breakfast will include: Pancakes, Sausage, Orange Juice, Coffee and Milk.
Please note: Chairperson Dean Wallace and his committee have decided to offer an incentive to other charitable groups to sell tickets to our Pancake Breakfast! These groups will be paid $2.00 for every ticket they sell! So, if you have a church group, Scout troop, sports team, or favorite charity that would like to earn a little extra money, please let Dean know. Information and sign up sheets will be available at this week's meeting.
A Pick Your prize Raffle will be displayed with many wonderful items to choose from! You can purchase tickets the day of the event and then decide what prizes you want to win by placing your ticket(s) into the corresponding bag in front of the item you are interested in. You will not need to be present to win.
The breakfast and raffle combine to make the Rotary's largest fundraiser and help fund our many local charitable efforts through the year, including:
- Rotary Scouts
- Foster Parenting
- Rotary Youth Exchange program
- Interact Club
- Rotary Youth Leadership Awards
- Junior Achievement In a Day
