As a principal with Layman, D’Atri & Associates, LLC, Mr. Layman provides significant tax, asset protection, estate planning, business succession planning, corporate law, and trust and estate administration expertise to the firm's clients.  In addition to being admitted to practice law in Ohio and Florida, Mr. Layman maintains his CPA license in the State of Ohio.

 

Mr. Layman has been certified as a Specialist in Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law by the Ohio State Bar Association.  This certification makes Brian one of a small group of attorneys in Ohio to have earned this distinction.  The Ohio State Bar Association has also appointed him to the Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law Section Council, which consists of approximately 80 attorneys who study and make recommendations regarding legislation in this area of the law.  Mr. Layman is a member of WealthCounsel and The Advisors Forum, both of which are national collaborative organizations that provide cutting edge estate planning tools and techniques.

 

Mr. Layman has been selected for inclusion in the Best Lawyers in America , has been designated as an “Ohio Rising Star,” by Super Lawyers, and has been elected as a Fellow of the American College of Trust & Estate Counsel.  He also maintains an AV rating (very high to preeminent) in Martindale Hubbell.   Mr. Layman earned his B.S. in Accounting, Master of Taxation and Juris Doctorate (summa cum laude) from the University of Akron.  While attending law school, Mr. Layman served on Law Review as the Assistant Editor and as Editor in Chief of the Akron Tax Journal.  Mr. Layman's published article on Dynasty Trusts has been cited on multiple occasions by the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance, Joint Committee of Taxation.

 

Mr. Layman and four of his colleagues crafted a comprehensive asset protection bill for Ohio and was present with Governor Kasich when he signed the bill on December 20, 2012.  Mr. Layman co-authored, FOR OHIO DOCTORS: Shedding Light on Asset Protection, Tax and Estate Planning, the comprehensive resource for all of an Ohio physician’s wealth planning needs.  Mr. Layman has published several articles, is a frequent speaker and is actively involved in professional and civic organizations. Mr. Layman is a member of the American Bar Association, Ohio State Bar Association, Florida State Bar Association and Stark County Bar Association.  He is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants.  Mr. Layman serves on the Stark County Bar Association Probate (co-Chair) and Elder Law Committees and the Stark Community Foundation Trust and Estate Planning Committee (Chair).  Mr. Layman is a Director of Guardian Support Services.  Brian was also named by the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce as one of the “20 Under 40” top Stark County professionals.

Like most Rotary years the work for our year began a year and one-half earlier with the organization and solicitation of the key personnel. The Avenue Chairmen, Dale Hartong, Chris Nicely, Tom Taylor and Louis Thurin carried the bulk of the load as has been a tradition in Canton Rotary.

 

In late 1980 a brain-storming session was held where we outlined a plan for an out-standing Rotary year.  We established a number of goals at that time and with a few exceptions, those goals were attained or exceeded.

 

The Club Avenue, which strengthened the organization of Canton Rotary, improved communications, took action to improve the facilities and conduct of our meetings, managed to improve our report books and our reporting procedure to the Governor, and streamlined our membership procedure.

 

The programs were perhaps highlighted by one of the first programs of the year which was re-orientation on the Hi-Pal Program.  This program was so inspirational that it inspired a drastic expansion in the club’s support of and involvement with the Hi-Pal Program.

 

In the Vocational Avenue, “The Wonderful World of Work” program was expanded to more schools and more personnel.  We improved on publicity of the Four Way Test and worked on improving Employer/Employee Relations. We presented a “South Carolina” program and had a program where each Rotarian was to invite his favorite competitor to lunch.  Our Career Information Day had to be re-scheduled due to a RTA strike, however, it again that year involved approximately 1,000 local students.

 

The Community Avenue of Service, like all the other Avenues, was recognized as the best in the district.  The Recreation and Camps Committee organized a fund raising effort which would provide for multiple year funding for students to attend Camp Miniwanca.  The cultural activities the club is involved in were drastically expanded and we added new programs in the area of Handicapped Scouts, Community Health and Safety, and Community Beautification.

 

The International Avenue, as usual, involved some of the largest committees and largest budget expenditures.  Our International Youth Projects Committee hosted six students and sent nearly a dozen students overseas.  Our World Community Service Committee sent a large amount of help to India and Uganda.  We recognized three new Paul Harris Fellows and moved our support for the Rotary Foundation up another notch and our International Night Program and Auction was an outstanding success.  Canton Rotary played a major role in the hosting of the Group Study Exchange Team from New Zealand.

 

The major theme of our planning for the year was an effort to involve every member of the Club in our Club’s activities. We attempted to use specific assignments rather than general appeals for help to match up people and projects.  The Club, once again, was honored with the Governor’s Cup as the best Rotary Club in District 665 and continued to be widely recognized as one of the best in the Rotary World.
