Rick Hairston is the Head Basketball Coach at Timken High School. He is a former track All-American and football standout at Mount Union. After college, Rick spent his first five years as an educator in the Alliance City School District. He spent the last 25 years at Canton City Schools, including the past 14 as Timken head basketball coach. His teams have won six PAC-7 championships in the last seven years and district titles in 2008 and 2013. He has won more than 62 percent of his games and recently celebrated his 200th career victory in January 2015.

It is with great pleasure we announce the Rotary Club of Canton's 100th anniversary celebration! This event will be held at the beautiful Historic Onesto in downtown Canton. The date is Saturday, April 11, 2015 at 6 PM.
Celebrating any 100th birthday is a very big milestone! This willbe a wonderful opportunity to invite potential new Rotarians to an event which will not only showcase an organization providing 100 years worth of "Service Above Self" to its community, but will also provide an opportunity to experience a bit of Canton history, the former Onesto Hotel.
Promoting and attending this 100 year celebration event is an honor for each and every Canton Rotarian. Let us all take pride in a 100 years of "Service Above Self"!

Sign-up sheets will be available during the Friday meetings to volunteer for the Annual Pancake Breakfast. This year's event will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2015.
Take a minute to look at your calendar and block some time off on that day to volunteer for the Rotary Club of Canton's largest fundraiser. We will need volunteers for set-up on Friday, March 13th (immediately following our regular Rotary meeting) or during the two shifts on 'Pancake Saturday'.
Youth Exchange Chairperson, Amy Mustafaga, is asking Rotarians to consider opening their home to our current Youth Exchange Student, Gui Guilherme Morgado. Gui is attending North Canton Hoover High School. Amy states we would need a Host family for just a couple months to get Gui through this school year.
If are interested in helping this young man or if you know of someone who would be interested in becoming a Host family, please contact Amy Mustafaga at (330) 837-4555 or the Rotary office at (330) 452-2882.

This year's event will once again be held at McKinley High School. The Pancake Breakfast will include: Pancakes, Sausage, Orange Juice, Coffee and Milk.
Please note: Chairperson Dean Wallace and his committee have decided to offer an incentive to other charitable groups to sell tickets to our Pancake Breakfast! These groups will be paid $2.00 for every ticket they sell! So, if you have a church group, Scout troop, sports team, or favorite charity that would like to earn a little extra money, please let Dean know. Information and sign up sheets will be available at this week's meeting.
A Pick Your prize Raffle will be displayed with many wonderful items to choose from! You can purchase tickets the day of the event and then decide what prizes you want to win by placing your ticket(s) into the corresponding bag in front of the item you are interested in. You will not need to be present to win.
The breakfast and raffle combine to make the Rotary's largest fundraiser and help fund our many local charitable efforts through the year, including:

In 1915, Canton was a city of 80,000 people. The Renkert Building was the only completed “skyscraper”; the new Central YMCA was under construction; the streets needed paving; the Chamber of Commerce had just been organized; Klein, Heffelman & Zollars was the largest store; and Dueber Hampden Watch Works was still in the race with Timken and United Alloy Steel Corporation for the largest industry in the city.
And what was The Rotary Club of Canton doing in its first year of existence? For starters (Chartered April 1, 1915) the fledgling club decided to meet every two weeks until RI notified club leadership (May, 1915) that weekly meetings were required. Before beginning weekly meetings, the club’s leadership promptly decided to take a summer sabbatical until August 23. Beginning September 13, weekly meetings at the Courtland Hotel began. To make up for lost time, two meetings were held at noon at Bender’s and two were held in the evening at the Courtland!
Early programs included: playing dominoes between courses; each member telling how he wished to be addressed by fellow Rotarians; “Canton 50 Years Ago”; “Canton 50 Years in the Future”; “The European War”; “Consideration of a Movement to Build a Park in NW Canton; and aiding the YMCA in its boys’ club on Liberty Street SE.
At each meeting, a different member acted as toastmaster. To encourage regular attendance, the club was divided into nine groups, each with a captain who would contact the other eight on his team to remind them to come to the next meeting. (Maybe an idea for today?)
New members that first year included Howard B. Fawcett, H.H. Timken, George B. Frease and Laverne Busche.
The first Ladies Night was held May 19, 1915, with the President of Rotary International, the Honorable Frank L. Mulholland of Toledo, as guest speaker.
An appropriation of $125 was made to pay the expenses of Jack Sell as delegate to the RI convention in San Francisco. A Rotary flag was purchased for $10. Humble beginnings for “The Finest Rotary Club in the World!”
At our weekly meeting on February 13, 2015, President Tom Clevenger asked everyone to keep longtime Rotarian Bob Luntz's family in their prayers. Bob passed away on February 11, 2015 at the age of 97 years old.
President Elect Paul White reminded the members about the upcoming "Pancake Day/Health Fair" on March 14, 2015, at McKinley Senior High School. Pancake tickets were being distributed during Friday's meeting and sign-up sheets were also available for volunteers for the event. Paul once again announced that our club's 100 Year Celebration will be held on April 11, 2015, at the beautifully restored Historic Onesto in downtown Canton. More details will be forthcoming, but please SAVE THE DATE!
Past President Dan Matthews took to the podium to remind members about celebrating the Club's 100th anniversary. He asked members to please read the Rotogram each week, because there has been some great club history from Canton Rotary's Past Presidents. Dan then played a game similar to "Beer Money", revised to "ice Cream Money", where members were given the opportunity to answer questions about the history of Canton Rotary. Members answering correctly won a $10.00 gift certificate to Taggart's Ice Cream Parlor. Dan thanked Rotarian Ernie Schott for the generous donation of gift certificates to be used as prizes.
Club Secretary Amanda Tietze welcomed the following guests to our meeting: Chip Conde, Tim Haverstock, Gretchen Fernandez (Jackson Rotarian), and John Chapman.
The "Happy Bucks" news was then provided by the following Rotarians: Mark Rojek gave a remembrance of Bob Luntz; Michelle Mullaly was happy for the joint venture of Canton Symphony Orchestra event which took place at the Canton Palace Theatre; Ernie Schott was happy with the Mount Union win over Marietta.
At the end of her presentation, President Tom presented speaker Georgia Paxos with a check in the amount of $2,500.00. This check represented the distribution of a grant from District 6650 and an additional donation from the Canton Rotary Charitable Fund. This donation will help the Canton Palace Theatre pay for their new Loop Induction System for those patrons who having hearing problems.
The following Rotarians turned in a makeup at Friday's meeting: Virginia Neutzling, Tom Sinclair (North Canton), Steve Fettman (Canton South), Bill Maddox (Perry and North Canton), Stacey Giammarco (Plain), Charles E. Smith (Naples, Florida) and Jerry Ortman (East Canton).
