James Francis King, a gastroenterologist in Canton, Ohio, has been praised as one of the best physicians, gastroenterologists and gastrointestinal endoscopists in America.
He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1957 and graduated third in his class when receiving his doctorate of medicine from Saint Louis University School of Medicine in 1961.
He has served as lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps.
He’s also served on the board of trustees of Timken Mercy Medical Center for nine years and the Canton Medical Education Foundation for 20 years, in addition to several other medical boards.
His grandfather, Ralph Hay, was the owner and manager of the world champion Canton Bulldogs from 1919 to 1922. It was in Ralph Hay’s automotive shop that the first organized meeting of football took place, which led to the formation of the National Football League in Canton, Ohio.
Dr. King has made it his mission to spread the story of this historic pioneer throughout the community.
“You are invited to experience Canton’s newest outdoor leisure activity, Urban Kayaking. This exciting new program was developed by Canton Parks in conjunction with Ernie’s Bike Shop and offers a new viewpoint of the city. The event will be first come, first served and limited to 20 participants on September 23, 2014, with a cost of $15.00. **TO DATE we have 14 spots still available! Kayakers will gather at 5:15 at Jerzee’s Sports Grille and take the provided transportation up to the launching site in Arboretum Park. We will then begin the roughly 1 mile journey down the Nimisilla Creek to Jerzee’s, our destination. Tables will be reserved at Jerzee’s for kayakers to gather after the event. Those Rotarians who prefer to stay land locked are also welcome meet at Jerzee’s around 6:30 to hear the kayakers brag about their experience.
All kayaks, paddles and gear will be provided. Participants must sign a waiver. Canton Parks and Ernie's are not responsible for anything lost, stolen or damaged on the kayak trip; nor responsible for any damage done by or done to voluntary participants. Kayaking is dependent on river conditions and takes about an hour to reach the destination.”
Beginning this past month, President Tom has asked the Rotogram editor, Rick Taylor, to make some changes to the layout of the weekly newsletter. As you may have noticed last week, we provided links within stories to which you could go if you wanted to read the stories in their entirety. We are also attempting to enlarge any pictures presented with the stories, but you may again need to go to the link for the story itself, then click on the photo to view it in its enlarged state.
This new format has freed up space for those stories of importance that President Tom wants every Canton Rotarian to read and be made aware of.
Please make every attempt to review the Rotogram on a weekly basis! It provides the membership with pertinent information which is not being relayed any other way except perhaps at a Friday meeting!!
For those members who are receiving the Rotogram by regular mail and also have an email account, we are asking you to contact the Rotary office and provide your email to us so we may include you in the email version of the Rotogram.

At the Friday, September 12, 2014, meeting President Tom announced that those members who will be attending the McKinley/Massillon Rally meeting on October 31, 2014, have an opportunity to show support of the Rotary Club of Canton as well as the Canton McKinley Bulldogs: a red T-shirt has been designed with "Beat Massillon" on the front and "The Rotary Club of Canton ~ Celebrating 100 Years" on the back. The shirts are being sold for $20.00 and are available in S, M, L, XL and XXL.

During the September 12, 2014 meeting, Steve Toohey, brother-in-law and great friend of PP Dan Matthews, was presented with a Paul Harris Fellow.
PP Dan had this to say about Steve: "Steve is the Chairman of the Perry Township Bicentennial Celebration and Board member of the Akron Civic Theater. He is an active member of the Perry ROTC that is rebuilding the Bell Family Home which was recently destroyed by fire. Steve spearheaded the donation of the DARE SUV to the Perry Township Police Department. He is the chairman of the "Flags of Freedom" which honors all veterans and was formed after the death of Perry resident Sgt. Dan Patron.
Steve is a distinguished member of the Canton South Rotary Club and is also well known for his many, many personal acts of kindness and generosity.

Where did you go to high school and college? Your major(s)? I graduated from Central Catholic High School and Bowling Green State University where I majored in Finance. I am finishing my MBA this fall at the University of Akron with a specialization in Finance.
What do you like to do in your spare time?Any hobbies? I enjoy spending time with my family and playing golf.
Where are your favorite places to go?My wife and I both play golf and there are a lot of nice courses around. We also like to walk the towpath and dine out.
