George Lemon, a retired business leader and long-time community activist recognized for his ability to get things done and bring people together for positive change, is serving as general chairman of activities for the 2015 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival. The world-renowned festival will celebrate the 52nd anniversary of the annual enshrinement of football players, coaches, and contributors into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, in the annual “One of a Kind Celebration!” planned by the Enshrinement Festival department of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Lemon is leading the chairmen of 26 Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce committees, who hold in excess of 350 meetings throughout the year, to attend to the massive details of planning and staging several Enshrinement Festival events. He is well-known for his reputation for getting involved, getting things done, and bringing people together for positive change.
His strong leadership skills led to a 23-year career in the U.S. Army and National Guard. As a Commissioned Armor Officer and Helicopter Pilot, he commanded numerous Army units including a Helicopter Group located at the Akron Canton Airport. He retired from Military service as a Senior Aviator and Intelligence Officer at the rank of Major. He was employed at AMETEK for 25 years, a Fortune 500 company, where he held a variety of positions, including Vice President of Marketing and Sales. He founded Technical Products Group, Inc., and led this very successful business as its president until his retirement in 2007.
Lemon served on United Way’s Board of Directors, and in 2005, he received the United Way of Stark County’s prestigious “Gold Key Award” for outstanding community service. His active membership in the Canton Museum of Art was instrumental in bringing the first two nationally-known African artists, Bing Davis and Dean Mitchell, exhibits to Canton Museum of Art and Stark County Schools. As the Chairman of the Board of Directors at Goodwill Industries, he was instrumental in leading the initiative to bring the $5-plus million dollar community campus at Goodwill to Canton, Ohio. He is a past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce.
He is a member of the Aultman Health Foundation and Aultman Dunlap Hospital Board of Directors and is current President of the Aultman Foundation. He serves as the President of the Stark State College Foundation Board, and Stark State College honored him as “Alumnus of the Year” at their commencement ceremonies in 2003. In May of 2010, he was presented with the Ohio Association of Community Colleges’ Distinguished Alumnus Award which highlighted his contributions toward the improvement of the community, professional achievement, volunteer service, participation in public service organizations, and involvement in civic functions. George and his wife Kaleen reside in Jackson Township, have four children and thirteen grandchildren.

During the Rotary meeting on Friday, July 24, 2015, Canton Rotarian and "Character Counts" Chairman, Dean Gogolewski, presented the Mayfield Scholarship Awards to McKinley Senior High School recipient, Kathleen Wyler, and Timken Senior High School recipient, Caleb Robinson.
Dean Gogolewski relayed the following on behalf of the respective high schools:
"Kathleen Wyler is a strong academic student at McKinley High School with a rigorous schedule, and is also involved extensively in the school. She has promoted school spirit through academics, athletics, and clubs. Her presence is notable in our school and community. Ranked 14th in her class, Kathleen has maintained a cumulative GPA of 4.26. Not only is she an outstanding scholar, she also serves as President of the Band. She has remained active in the band for four years, participating in marching band, concert band, jazz band, and pep band. She has competed in solo and ensemble and has been a strong representative of McKinley.
As a golfer at McKinley for four years, she is to be admired as she faced a challenging season and continued to compete with great sportsmanship. Kathleen aspires to become an occupational therapist to fulfill her desire to positively impact the lives of others. To this end, she has volunteered at Aultman Hospital and Aultman Heart Association. In recognition of her character, scholarship, leadership, and community service, Kathleen has been inducted into the National Honor Society. She was also chosen as a Canton Scholar and was recognized along with her peers at a banquet on April 20th."
"Caleb Robinson is studying Early Childhood Education at Timken. He exemplifies all of the pillars of Character; most especially trustworthiness, respect and responsibility. In his work with young students in the elementary schools he treats everyone the way he wants to be treated. He is well liked by all students, the youngsters he works with and his fellow students. Because of his work ethic and attitude, he is a favorite of the staff as well. He is always smiling and willing to help anyone in any way.
Caleb's nickname is Speedy. He got this name in grade school because he is always running. He is an athlete-- 3 years with the track team, 4 years with the boys basketball team and 3 years on the football team. He works hard at everything he does at Timken. He is looking forward to heading to Charleston University in West Virginia to study Early Childhood Education and become a special education teacher.

 Thursday Sept. 17, will be the inaugural Canton Rotary Oktoberfest. Our goals are to make this event one that elevates the name and image of Canton Rotary in our community, one that becomes our signature fundraiser for our club’s charitable fund, and one that is a fun event with lots of fellowship via participation from Canton Rotarians. It will also be an event that will increase awareness of Canton Rotary and our work in the community, plus be an excellent vehicle for membership recruitment.
We need the support of all Canton Rotarians in this new event to make it successful. There are many ways to support this event: volunteering to work the day of the event, event sponsorship, selling tickets for the event, and more. Please note – Rotarians will NOT be asked to buy the tickets, but rather to promote the ticket sales at their business and to their customers, associates, and friends.

Thursday Sept. 17 from 4:30 to 8:30
Location – Market St N. between 3rd and Tuscarawas
Tickets - $30 in advance, $40 at gate
What is the Canton Rotary Oktoberfest? Our Oktoberfest is centered on beer sampling from 6 or more local breweries, as well as 2 wine distributors. The ticket includes 6 beer or wine samples. We will have local downtown restaurants as our food vendors, and we will also have entertainment including a German style “Oktoberfest” band.
We are making the sponsorship opportunities available to Canton Rotarians first. The sponsorship levels and benefits are listed and can be found by following this LINK. You can use this form (LINK) to indicate your sponsorship commitment, and Canton Rotary will bill you in August for your commitment.
(Editor's note: one of the objectives of this new fund- and friend-raiser is to diminish our reliance on the annual Pancake Day as our major income source for our philanthropic community activities.....AND to diminish the need for Canton Rotarians to purchase the Pancake Day tickets out of our own pockets! We think this OktoberFest will be a popular event to which local businesses will WANT to pay to have their name attached as a sponsor.  Get ready for a great day of golf and fun at our annual Stark County Rotary Golf Invitational. Sign up now for the Four-Person Scramble on Friday, August 21st at Tam O'Shanter Golf Course.

We will be featuring Old Carolina Barbecue for lunch this year! Lunch begins at 12 noon, modified shotgun starts at 1:00 p.m.
The cost is $50.00 per person for Rotarians and guests. Cost includes lunch, 18 holes with a cart, and beer and beverages on the course.

 At our weekly meeting on July 24, 2015, President Paul White asked the members to keep in their thoughts Canton Rotarians Rick Sherer, who is recovering from a shoulder replacement, and Michelle Mullaly, who is also recovering from surgery.
Canton Rotarian and "Character Count" Committee Chair, Dean Gogolewski, presented the recipients of this years Mayfield Scholarship winners (*please see story regarding the winners).
President Elect Craig Young welcomed the following guests to our meeting: Diane Clary, Anthony Robinson, Juanita Robinson, Caleb Robinson, Dawn Campanelli, Kathleen Wyler, Diane Wyler, Scott Wyler, Jared Shive (Louisville Rotary), Miranda Saling (Louisville Rotary), Mandi Snyder, Ruth Zitnik, Debbie Poland and Tammie Mills.
President Elect Craig then proceeded to bring the members up to date on the Oktoberfest taking place on Thursday, September 17, 2015 (*please see story for further information).
Nick Perini then took to the podium to announce details regarding this year's golf outing. He is looking for hole sponsors ($75), golf prize donations and foursomes. He announced a new putting contest and the winner would receive the use of a BMW for a weekend courtesy of Cain BMW (*please see story for further information).
Canton Rotarian Rick Taylor became the "auctioneer" for four HOF Fashion Show tickets donated by Canton Rotarian Dean Wallace. The winning bid was by President Paul White for $160.00.
President Paul announced that Canton Rotarian Dan Fuline received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the May 12, 2015 Annual Dinner of the Ohio Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. Congratulations to Dan on receiving this very prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award!!
The "Happy Bucks" news was then presented by by the following Rotarians: Rick Taylor was happy for the Club because his guest, Dawn Campiaelli, is his boss and that meant he had to behave!; Jim Blake was very happy to be back from his time off due to surgery and for the fact that he realized that two of his alma maters, THE Ohio State University and Duke, won national championships this year; Bruce Schorsten was pleased to announce that the 46th Annual Schorsten Jr. Golf Tournament took place last week and they had a great showing of young golfers. Bruce stated "I love helping young golfers"; Joe Niamtu donated a Happy Buck on behalf of the scholarship winner from Timken High and said, "Onward Trojans"!
