The Rotary Club of Canton’s Scout Program, the club’s oldest continuing project, will be on display Thursday in the annual update. Committee Chair and Past President, Scott Sandrock, reports “We had over 50 Scouts participate this year from several different schools."

Scott further explained, "This project is a collaboration between the Rotary Club of Canton, the Canton City teachers in the multiple disabilities classes, and the Buckeye Council - Boy Scouts of America.  Several service projects and field trips were coordinated through their efforts, along with the hard work of the teachers and their assistants.  It was a successful year.”

As is our tradition, our Rotary Scouts and their teachers and Scout leaders will attend this week’s meeting and present information on their activities to the Club. You are encouraged to attend as it is always an interesting and inspirational meeting.

Committee Chair Scott would like to thank the Rotary Club of Canton and the Boy Scouts of America for their continued support of this very productive program.  This program offers these children the opportunity to enjoy the Scouting experience, which they would most likely not have access to normally, while also teaching them the value of helping others. This is one of the most worthwhile projects that the Rotary Club of Canton participates in and supports.

During our meeting on April 24, 2015, Canton Rotarian Tim Shetzer introduced the McKinley Student Character Champion Award Winner for April, 2015, Kathleen Wyler.

 

McKinley Senior High School had this to say about Kathleen:  "Kathleen Wyler, a senior at McKinley Senior High School, is a strong academic student with a rigorous schedule, and she is involved extensively in other ways in the school.  She has promoted school spirit through academics, athletics, and clubs.  Her presence is notable in our school and community.  Ranked 14th in her class, Kathleen has maintained a cumulative GPA of 4.26.  Not only is she an outstanding scholar, she also serves as president of the band.  She has remained active for four years, participating in marching band, concert band, jazz band, and pep band.  She has competed in both solo and ensemble and has been a strong representative for McKinley High School.

 

"As a golfer at McKinley for four years, she has spent the last two years competing in the boys' division (and, as Kathleen noted, 'hitting from the men's tees').  Her commitment to the team has been admirable as she faced a challenging season and continued to compete with great sportsmanship.

 

"Kathleen aspires to become an occupational therapist to fulfill her desire to positively impact the lives of others.  To this end, she has volunteered at Aultman Hospital and Aultman Heart Association.  In recognition of her character, scholarship, leadership, and community service, Kathleen was inducted into the National Honor Society.  She was also chosen as a Canton Scholar and was recognized along with her peers at a banquet on April 20th.

 

"Kathleen attributes her high school success to her parents and grandparents, who have helped to shape her into a young woman of character and passion.  Her kindness to others, her strong work ethic, and her high moral character set her apart from others and clearly make her an obvious choice for this Character Champion recognition.

During our meeting on April 24, 2015, Canton Rotarian Tim Shetzer introduced the Timken Student Character Champion Award Winner for April, 2015, Marcellus Bertram.

 

Timken High School had this to say:  "Timken is proud to present Marcellus Bertram as the Timken Character Counts Champion for the month of April.  Marcellus transferred to Timken for his senior year because he felt that he "fit" better at Timken.  In his time here he has made a positive impression on both students and staff.  Marcellus was inducted into the National Honor Society as a junior.  He was also inducted into the National Technical Honor Society as a junior as part of the 'Project Lead the Way' program, which is a pre-engineering program at Timken High School.  This year he placed 4th in the Skills USA regional tournament in Technical Drafting.  You might have seen Marcellus' smiling face on the United Way posters and ads. Project Lead the Way worked with the United Way and Marcellus kept in touch with his mentor at the United Way office.  We believe that the United Way board was impressed with Marcellus and his outgoing personality, and his steadfast commitment to helping the community as they chose him and his friend, Isaiah Smith, to be serve as the Students of the Year with the Black Alliance of Educators.  After graduation, Marcellus will be attending Mount Union and studying Mechanical Engineering and Middle School Education.  With his 100 plus hours of community service, he has proven himself worthy of being a Character Counts Champion."

The Rotary Club of Canton has been given a wonderful opportunity by Wendy Joliet, owner of Studio Arts and Glass.  Wendy designed commemorative wine glasses for the door prize given out at the "100 Year Celebration".  

 

These glasses are available for members to purchase. The price for an individual glass is $20.00 payable to The Rotary Club of Canton. The club is not making a profit from this item; This price reflects the cost of the wine glass and engraving only.

At our weekly meeting held on April 24, 2015, President Tom Clevenger announced that Tom Sinclair purchased ice cream for everyone to celebrate his birthday. President Tom also reminded the members that our next meeting will be held on  THURSDAY April 30th and will be held in the BALLROOM due to the size of the meeting.

The "Happy Bucks" news was then provided by the following Rotarians:  Rick Taylor was excited on how the Cavs have been playing.  He also mentioned that Junior Achievement Business Challenge would take place at RG Drage this Wednesday from 9-1 and Rotarians were invited to attend; Mark Rojek announced that Canton Rotarian Nick Perini was awarded the 20 under 40; Virginia Neutzling thanked Tom Sinclair for the ice cream and wished him a Happy Birthday; Kitty Pelanda stated that she and Ray would be celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary; Tena Wilson said she was thrilled with the Library's "Smart Store Program", which was launched 7 months ago, and that the Library's usage is up by 24.6%; Bill Maddox announced that the Canton Symphony Orchestra was a performance of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy", featuring a chorus of 150 and pianist Andre Watts. He stated seats were still available and if you mentioned his name you would receive a great price reduction on tickets.
