Friday's program will be presented by three District 6650 Exchange Students.  They are as follows:

 

​Luiz Guilherme Morgado da Cunha (Gui) is the Canton Rotary exchange student this year.  He is from Valenca Brazil where he lives with his mom and dad.  He enjoys soccer and video games.  Gui is a senior at Hoover High School these year, where he helped with the soccer team in the fall.  Gui lived until recently with Scott and Lisa Vaughn and now lives with Fritz and Susan Spring.  Gui learned to play the guitar this year for the talent show.

 

Marta Manzo is the North Canton Rotary exchange student and she is from Pompei, Italy, where she lives with her parents and an older sister.  Marta attended Hoover High School this year and is presently staying with Jane and Steven Schloenbach.  Marta loves to shop and she is enjoying the track team where she is throwing shot put and running sprints.

During our meeting on May 15, 2015, Canton Rotarian Dean Gogolewski introduced the McKinley Student Character Champion Award Winner for May 2015, Tianna Vozar.  

 

McKinley Senior High School had this to say about Tianna: "Tianna Vozar is the epitome of excellence in every area at McKinley Senior High School.  As a senior, she has maintainted a 4.6 grade point average indicating that she has taken extensive AP and advanced classes throughout high school.  An exceptional student, Tianna raises the bar for her peers and consistently manages her time to excel in other areas as well.

 

If you read the Canton Repository, you have probably seen her picture and articles depicting her athletic career in the swimming pool.  She is the captain of the Bulldog's swim team and has broken the school records in the 50 and 100 meter Freestyle.  It has been exciting for our school to cheer her on as she swam in the OHSAA State Swim Meet.  This year she was invited to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.  Her commitment is evident when she is in the pool training at 5:00 am before school.

 

Additionally, Tianna has been a member of our nationally recognized Speech team, National Honor Society, and Canton Scholars for four years.  She has volunteered in the special education classroom assisting students with disabilities and she also teaches swim classes to the youth of Canton.

 

Tianna will attend Xavier University in the fall where she will continue her education and swimming career."

 

 

 

 

During our meeting on May 15, 2015, Canton Rotarian Dean Gogolewski introduced the Timken Student Character Champion Award Winner for May 2015, Caleb Robinson.

 

Timken High School had this to say:  "Caleb is studying Early Childhood Education at Timken.  He exemplifies all of the pillars of Character; most especially trustworthiness, respect and responsibility.  In his work with young students in the elementary schools he treats everyone the way he wants to be treated.  He is well liked by all students, the youngsters he works with and his fellow students.  Because of his work ethic and attitude, he is a favorite of the staff also. He is always smiling and willing to help anyone in any way.

 

Caleb's nickname is Speedy.  He got this name in grade school because he is always running.  He is an athlete; 3 years with the track team, 4 years with the boys basketball team, and 3 years on the football team.

 

He works hard at everything he does at Timken.  He is looking forward to graduation and heading to Charleston University in West Virginia to study Early Childhood Education and become a special education teacher."

In a "Thank You " letter dated April 16, 2015, David Miller, President and Denise Dessecker, Vice President of the Philomatheon Society of the Blind, Inc. writes:

 

"Dear Steve Fettman, Philomatheon Society Committee and Canton Rotary Club:  Thank you on behalf of The Philomatheon Society of the Blind for the donations received on April 15, 2015.  We are very pleased that the event at Taggarts Ice Cream Parlor, on April 8, 2015, went so well and are so grateful for the additional donations received.  Messer. Schott and Fettman, as well as their employees, should be commended for helping the non-profit organizations, such as the Philomatheon Society, of the community.  We hope that we can be part of this program in the future.

 

We would also like to thank the Rotary Club as a whole, especially people like Jack Barkan.  People such as him and Mr. Fettman make our lives easier and gives us confidence to pursue matters that might not be considered.

 

Once again, thank you for all the effort and generosity that you show toward the Society.  If the Society can be of help to the Rotary in the future, we would be glad to do so."

 

 

 

      

"Report on the Washington, D.C. WW-2 Memorial Dedication Trip"

"The trip was a Canton Rotary Club project to take a group of WW-2 vets, wives, and several other interested persons to D.C. to attend the "Salute to the Veterans" program and the Dedication ceremony on 5/29/2004.  We used two 15 passenger maxi vans made available gratis by President Mike Bragg.  18 travelers left my residence at 9:00 a.m. on 5/28/2004 for the 8 hour ride to stay overnight at the Watergate hotel.  Six of us attended the "Salute to the Veterans" at 7:00 p.m. in the MCI Center arena.  The first half consisted of a number of narrated vignettes about civilian and military life during the war years accompanied by scenes projected on a large screen.  In the second half the Army band played big band music from the WW-2 era.  (Glenn Miller).  This was followed by bands and marchers from the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Marines and Air Force; the effect was spectacular. The next morning we met in the lobby at 11:00 a.m. to be transported to within a few blocks of the Memorial site.  There was a very large crowd (Est. 200k); all in good humor.  The weather was perfect.  Our tickets were in sections 1 and 2.  There were lots of young volunteers offering assistance to those needing it.  The Dedication program consisted of short speeches by Senator Bob Dole, Frederick W. Smith who were Chairman and co-Chairman of the WW-2 Memorial campaign, Gen P.X. Kelley U.S. Marine corps-ret., Chairman American Battle Monuments Commission, and remarks by President George W. Bush.  Incidentally Ex Presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton attended.  This was followed by the National Anthem by the U.S. Navy band and a Benediction by Dr. Barry C. Black, Chaplin of the U.S. Senate,  We then met our vans at the agreed on site and began the return trip with a stop in Potomac Maryland for fine dining at the Normandie Farm restaurant.  We arrived back at 3:00 a.m. on 5/30/2004.

At our weekly meeting on May 15, 2015, Club Secretary Amanda Tietze welcomed the following guests to our meeting: Ed Mahoney, John Tucker, Juanita Robinson, Anthony Robinson, Larry Mustafaga, Caleb Robinson, Andy Harms, Ruth Zitnik, Nick Swaldo, Tianna Vozar and Debbie Vozar.

 

 

Rotarian Dean Gogolewski  presented the May "Character Champions" from McKinley Sr. High School and Timken High School (see stories above).

 

The following Executive Board members will receive a makeup for attending the meeting held on May 14, 2015: President Tom Clevenger, President Elect Paul White, Vice President Craig Young, Treasurer Dave Schrade, Secretary Amanda Tietze and incoming Club Secretary Michelle Mullaly.

 

The Rotary office will be closed this Monday, May 25, 2015 for the Memorial Day holiday.
