PRESIDENT MARK'S WEEKLY THOUGHTS

Well, I’m still sitting here looking at the beautiful snow.  It’s the first time in several years I can remember so much snow in early January, and I’m unable to enjoy it.  Whether my surgery was well timed or not would depend on you point of view.

It was great to see so many people on-line and in person last week.  I know there are times that the Zoom option seems a bit to arduous, but it really does serve as a great option for many who are unable to attend in person for one reason or another.  I want to see us get our in-person attendance up, but if you can’t be there in person, please join in on the Zoom meeting.  If you want to do this, but aren’t sure how, please reach out to me or Sue Marzano and we will be happy to take you through the super simple process.  If you have a smart phone, you could even access it from there.

This week our speaker had a commitment and needs to leave early.  To accommodate him we will be starting our meeting promptly at 11:45 with a speaker start time of no later than 11:55. Please try to arrive accordingly.

I’ll see you Friday.  Not sure yet whether it will be in person or on Zoom, but I’ll be there.President Mark

WHAT'D I MISS LAST WEEK?
At our meeting last Friday, Jan. 21, 2022, President-elect Lynn Hamilton and President Mark (from his home via Zoom, allegedly) welcomed 41 Canton Rotarians to the meeting, combined in-person and on Zoom. After our Club business and before our speaker, Dr. Denise Sechrist, Dean of Kent State University-Stark, Secretary Paula presented the following interesting stuff:

On This Day in History:

1892 - The first official basketball game was played in Springfield, Massachusetts, by YMCA students of the game's inventor, James A. Naismith.

1920 – Prohibition takes effect stopping the sale and consumption of alcohol when the 18th Amendment went into effect. It ended in 1933

1977 – President Jimmy Carter grants an unconditional pardon to hundreds of thousands of men who evaded the draft during the Vietnam War.

1978 – The Bee Gees Saturday Night Fever album goes number one and remains there for 24 weeks.

2008 – Today is “Black Monday” in worldwide stock markets. FTSE 100 had its biggest ever one-day points fall in history, European stocks closed with their worst result since 9/11, and Asian stocks drop as much as 15%.

Weird Fact:

In 1790 Joseph Guillotine proposed a new, more humane method of execution: a machine designed to cut off the condemned person's head as painlessly as possible. Then in 1793 The French King Louis XVI is guillotined for treason.

OUR TEEN ROTARY AFFILIATE, INTERACT, SEEKING CANDY DONATIONS (OR CASH)!
Interact is our Club's Rotary affiliate at McKinley High School. Our Interact Chairperson, Jennie George, showed a short video last Friday that these Interact students produced, in which they ask for donations of candy that they can sell at the school to raise money for t-shirts for their members.

If you wish to help, you may either buy candy and bring it to our meetings for Jenny to forward to the Interact folks, or you may make a cash donation to provide funds so the Interacters can purchase their own candy to resell. You can bring cash to our meetings to give to Jenny, or you may make a donation through our website: click the "Make A Payment" button on the home page, fill out that form and make sure to enter "Interact candy donation" in the comments section.

Interact is Rotary's attempt to reach out to high school age young people, with the intent of instilling the principals of Rotary and to teach these young people the value of giving back to the community, as well as working together as a team to achieve a goal. It's a great way to introduce them to Rotary, as well as help them with their personal development.

More info on the success of our local Interact Club will be coming in the near future, In the meantime, please support our Interact's candy fundraiser. Thanks!
