At our weekly meeting held on August 29, 2014, Rotarian Drew Pelger informed the membership of an upcoming "Urban Kayaking" event through Canton Parks. Golf Committee Chair Nick Perini updated the members on the Annual Golf Outing results (see stories below).

 

Club Secretary Amanda Tietze welcomed the following guests to our meeting: Kevin Pelanda, Ralph Goodenberger, Quinn Parker, Nina Carter and Dennis Saunier.  The "Happy Bucks" news was provided this week by the following Rotarians: Dave Schrade announced that his daughter, Erika, was chosen as Cheer Captain for her Varsity Cheer Squad at Louisville High School; Craig Young announced that his daughter is getting married; and Becky Clark informed the membership that the organization she works with, Wishes Can Happen, had a two day Radiothon with WHBC AM/FM and our very own Rotarian, Rebecca Marchino. They were able to raise a very impressive $150,000.00!

The Rotary Clubs of Canton, Plain, North Canton, Massillon and Perry held their annual golf outing on Friday, August 22, 2014, at Tam O'Shanter Golf Course in Canton.

 

There were 82 golfers in the event this year. It was a hot, muggy day with a potential for rain. Fortunately, the rain held off and a good time was had by all.

 

The winner of this four-person scramble was North Canton Rotarian Ben Wheeler and his team consisting of Quinn Parker, Joshua Thurman and Doug Featheringham, with a combined score of 58.

 

Closest to the pin winners were:

Ladies Longest Drive:

​The winner of the 50/50 drawing was Ben Bennett, who won an amount of $227.00.

 

There were two skins awarded.  The first skin went to the team of Scott, Leopold, Palumbo and Sirak with a 2 on the par 4 18th hole.  The second skin was awarded to the team of Beule, Sutula, Hayes and Robertson for making a 2 on the par 4 13th hole.

“You are invited to experience Canton’s newest outdoor leisure activity, Urban Kayaking.  This exciting new program was developed by Canton Parks in conjunction with Ernie’s Bike Shop and offers a new viewpoint of the city.  The event will be first come first serve and limited to 20 participants on September 23, 2014, with a cost of $15.00.  Kayakers will gather at 5:15 at Jerzee’s Sports Grille and take the provided transportation up to the launching site in Arboretum Park.  We will then begin the roughly 1 mile journey down the Nimisilla Creek to Jerzee’s, our destination.  Tables will be reserved at Jerzee’s for kayakers to gather at after the event.  Those Rotarians who prefer to stay land locked are also welcome meet at Jerzee’s around 6:30 to hear the kayakers brag about their experience.
 
All kayaks, paddles and gear will be provided. Participants must sign a waiver. Canton Parks, and Ernie's are not responsible for anything lost, stolen or damaged on the kayak trip; nor responsible for any damage done by or done to voluntary participants.  Kayaking is dependent on river conditions and takes about an hour to reach the destination.”

PRESIDENT 2014-15

One of the great privileges of being president of Rotary International is having the chance to visit so many parts of the Rotary world. Usually I travel to participate in Rotary events; speak at Rotary clubs, conferences, and institutes; and encourage Rotarians in their service. But as president, I am responsible for all branches of the Rotary family. This means that it is also my privilege to support the service of Rotary's youngest generations: our Rotaractors, Interactors, Rotary Youth Exchange students, and Rotary Youth Leadership Awards participants.

When I see the work Rotarians do, I am always impressed, always excited, and always inspired. When I see the work of our New Generations, I am all of this – and frequently I am surprised as well. Not by the quality of their work – for I have learned to expect great things from them – but by the creativity and ingenuity of their thinking. I look at what they have done and think not just "What a great job!" but "What a great idea!" Because every generation sees the world in a unique way, and every individual has a unique point of view. Faced with the same problems, we arrive at different solutions. This is why, in Rotary, our diversity – of culture, language, expertise, gender, and age – is our strength.

In Rotary, we try to take the long view in our service. We aspire to serve in ways that will make a lasting difference, that will continue to have an impact after our participation ends. Our younger generations, in my experience, share this sentiment, and apply it globally, by focusing on environmental issues in new and innovative ways. When I became a Rotarian, environmental issues were barely on our radar. To young people today, these concerns are front and center. Their perspective is a valuable contribution to the world of Rotary service, and it is one that we should all encourage and support. Just as they are learning from us, so should we be learning from them.

The young people who are serving in Rotaract and Interact, and participating in Youth Exchange and RYLA today, are the Rotarians of tomorrow. When we support them, we are supporting the future of our entire organization. We are helping to train the men and women who will be the club presidents, district governors, RI directors, and RI presidents of tomorrow.
