HABITAT POCKET PARK LAST WEEK

Last Friday, starting around 8:30 AM, a group of Canton Rotarians, their guests and other volunteers, showed up at a triangle of land at Allen Avenue SE and Johns Court SE, to assist with the build out of the Canton Rotary Habitat Pocket Park on that site. This pocket park, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Canton along with Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio, is part of Habitat's Renewal Project: SE Canton, a "holistic" effort to revitalize the Lathrop, Hartford and Belden neighborhoods. Go to this link for more info: https://www.habitateco.org/the-renewal-project-se-canton/

Our intrepid volunteers laid paving bricks for the walk way and central area, planted shrubs and plants, spread dirt and stones for the beds, and generally tried to look busy! . Rotarians were: Jennie George, Dave Grabowsky, Paul Hervey (who brought a guest, neighbor Mike Stevens), Bob Matthews, PDG Bob Pattison, Chuck Smith, Rick Taylor, Jim Thomas, and Craig Young. There were also three volunteers from the Stark County Prosecutors Office, arranged by Paul Hervey. Also helping was Campbell Landscaping and, of course, the folks from Habitat, including Aaron Brown.

During our abbreviated weekly Rotary meeting following our work session, PP Craig Young detailed our club's history with Habitat, and Aaron followed him with an update on Habitat's current activities, especially the Renewal Projects in both the NE and SE areas of Canton. Those Rotarians on-site enjoyed a box lunch provided by Mr. Mike's Catering. We were also joined by a few Rotarians on Zoom.

We hope you'll be able to join us for our next 'hands-on" Rotary project!

NEW INFO! UKRAINIAN DINNER/FUNDRAISER! NEW DATE, LOCATION & TIME!

District Governor (and Canton Rotarian) Michelle Charles has set a goal for District 6650 to raise $100,000 for the Rotary International Disaster Relief Fund, specifically to benefit the Ukraine relief efforts.

Therefore, we are all invited to "A Night for Ukraine", a special fundraising event on SUNDAY NOVEMBER 6, 2022!  (Please note Browns fans, if there are any of us left: it is a bye week for CLE).

From Project Chair PDG Scott Schulick:

"Late last week, we were informed that the venue where we were to have the Ukraine Relief Event at St. Nikolas Hall in North Canton suffered extensive damage from a fire and will not be able to host our event on Saturday evening, November 5.

After several attempts to find another venue, we have been forced to move the event to Sunday, November 6, 2022 from 3-7pm at the St. George Serbian Center, 4667 Applegrove St. NW, North Canton, OH  44720.  We are sorry for any inconvenience.  The good news is that most of our entertainment, our caterer, and our special guest, Past RI President Barry Rassin, are still able to attend!

"We have been in contact with PDG Mykola Stebljanko in Odessa, Ukraine, and we are very pleased to learn how our efforts and proceeds will benefit aid on the ground and administered by local Rotarians."

Cost is $60 per person and includes an authentic Ukrainian ethnic menu, performances from local Ukrainian musicians and dancers, and a special appearance by Past RI President Barry Rassin.

Your Canton Rotary Board of Trustees has agreed to budget a $2500 donation to the District's Ukraine fundraising efforts from our Charitable Fund.

However, if you, your business or someone you know would like to also contribute to this cause, you may do so by buying tickets, purchasing a sponsorship, or donating an auction item worth $500 or more for the auction for the Night for Ukraine Dinner!

Information is provided at this link: http://rotarydistrict6650.org/. All tickets purchased for this dinner will go toward the cost of the function itself, leaving all sponsorships and auction proceeds to go directly to the Ukraine relief effort!

WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE A LARGE CONTINGENT OF CANTON ROTARIANS AT THIS DINNER TO SUPPORT BOTH UKRIANE AND OUR OWN DISTRICT GOVERNOR MICHELLE! Why not make it a Canton Rotary SOCIAL EVENT?
PINTS & POURS FOR POLIO PLUS POSTPONED!
Due to scheduling conflicts, our Pints & Pours for Polio Plus, the celebrity bartender fundraiser originally scheduled for Monday October 17th, has now been postponed until further notice. DG Michelle Charles is looking at perhaps a January date for this event. We will certainly keep you informed. Thanks!
