George Sleigh was born in Gateshead, England. Graduated from Rutherford College of Technology in Newcastle, England with a degree in Naval Architecture and spent his career in ship design and shipbuilding related organizations.  Moved from England to Canada in 1961 and subsequently moved to Cleveland and then to New York where he worked for 20 years (including 10 years in the World Trade Center, where he was on 9/11/2001).

Worked for the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for 35 years, where his final responsibility was Manager of the Technical Consistency Department.  ABS is an organization that acts in maritime matters that relate directly to the safety of life and property at sea.

Retired in 2003, moved back to Ohio, lives in Hudson with his wife, Elaine, of 52 years.  They have 3 children and 11 grandchildren.

The Rotary office received a "Thank You" letter dated June 17, 2015, from the Boy Scouts of America Buckeye Council Scout Executive, David P. Truax. The thank you letter reads:

 

"Dear Friend of Scouting:  THANK YOU for your commitment to support the Buckeye Council through our 2015 Friends of Scouting campaign.  Your pledge in the amount of $500.00 is greatly appreciated.  Your support of Scouting in our council provided programs for over 13,500  people who would not otherwise receive the benefits of character development, fitness, and citizenship training.

 

Each night of the week, week after week, over 1,000 young men are at their Scout meetings.  If they all met at one place, the TV News would cover the event.  But they gather unnoticed, in private homes, in church basements, community centers, and school cafeterias.  They take on exciting challenges and explore new skills under the watchful eyes of positive adult role models.  In small groups they all learn the values of Scouting: personal responsibility, moral integrity, leadership and mental and personal fitness.

 

The Buckeye Council continues to be a leader in membership, serving nearly 12% of the available youth in our area.  Seven Ranges, Scout Reservation is recognized as one of America's premier summer camping programs serving more than 2,515 youth last summer.  There were 1,278 Cub Scouts who participated in our Cub Scout Day Camps and Webelos Resident Camp programs.  One hundred eighteen young men earned the coveted Eagle Scout rank in 2014.

At our weekly meeting on June 19, 2015, President Tom Clevenger asked the members to keep in their thoughts Canton Rotarians Jim Blake and Bob Pattison who both had surgery.  President Tom took the opportunity to thank several Rotarians who helped him throughout his year as President  Tom then presented Dan Matthews with his 40 years of service award as well as presenting a 50 years of service award to Tim Franta on behalf of his uncle Tom Franta.  President Tom also thanked the retiring Trustees for their years of service:  Becky Clark, Tim Furbay, Robert Matthews and Sharon Sirpilla. He then thanked retiring Club Secretary Amanda Tietze for her years of service to the club in the capacity as secretary.

 

PDG/PP Dave Ewing was the installing officer for the incoming 2015-2016 Board and Trustees and installed new Club President Paul White, President Elect Craig Young, Vice President Amanda Tietze, Treasurer Dave Schrade, Secretary Michelle Mullaly and Sergeant-at-Arms Robert Matthews. New Trustees are Steve Fettman, Kurt Goodenberger, Rebecca Marchino and Bruce Schorsten.

 

Amanda Tietze welcomed the following guests to our meeting:  Jen Clark, Joy Parkinson, JP Parkinson, Lilly Parkinson, Richard Regula (Massillon Rotarian), Susan White, Missy Hardesty, Erin Troyer and Nancy Wharmby.

 

The "Happy Bucks" news was then presented by the following Rotarians: Suzette Matthews was very happy and thankful to guest and professional photographer, Jen Clark, for taking the Past President picture, Board photo and Club photo; Denny Fulmer was excited to announce he became a first-time grandfather yesterday; Rick Taylor was very proud of the great season the Cavs had even after losing three players.  Rick also stated there would be a street party in front of Kozmo's on Saturday from 3-8; Dan Matthews gave additional money to help cover Rick Taylor's announcement.  Dan was also very happy for his wife, Suzette, for setting up the photo opportunity for the Club; Ernie Schott was very happy and thankful for Taggart's new sign by Canton Signs; Dave Buele was pleased to announce he had just received confirmation from the City of Canton for the Rotary Club of Canton to hold its first "October Fest" on the 3rd Thursday in September (more information to be provided at a later date); Ryan Parkinson was very happy to see the Officers being installed and especially his Father-in-Law, Paul White, installed as the new Club President.  Ryan then thanked Tom Clevenger for a job well done as President; Paul White's wife, Susan, then gave a happy buck and stated Paul loves Rotary; Craig Young then thanked Rotarian Dave Beule for putting together the "October Fest" and stated "Dave is the busiest man in Canton"; Michelle Mullaly stated her husband has been in Europe and she was happy that she only had one week left of being a single parent; Dave Ewing was happy to be the Installing Officer; and finally Bob Matthews was very happy to announce that he and his wife became grandparents for the fourth time to a new grandson.
