In the story entitled "Newest Paul Harris Fellows Introduced to Club" it was stated that Rotarian Bob Carr received his Paul Harris Fellow +1 pin. The article should have stated Bob received his Paul Harris Fellow +2 pin.

  The Rotary office will be closed on November 26 - November 30 for the Thanksgiving Holiday. The office will resume normal operating hours on Tuesday, December 1st.

At our meeting on November 20, 2015, Dean Gogolewski presented the Character Champion Awards for November, 2015 to Paige Gallagher and Michael Pirovolus.

 

  Paige Gallagher has been chosen as a Character Champion because of her dedication to her school community.  She participates in nearly all service related school activities, including Pep Club, Key Club, and Student Council, as well as serving as the Senior Class Co-President.  Paige works hard to organize events that support the entire student body and school as a whole. She demonstrates tremendous follow through, allowing those activities she participates in and leads to be successful.  In addition to these activities, she is an exceptional athlete and student.  She is leads as the captain of the cross country team, and is a member of both the track and the swim team.  Paige challenges herself academically by taking Advanced Placement courses and does well in those courses.   She intends to combine her interests in science, math, and athletics by pursuing a career in Exercise Science, and will begin that endeavor by enrolling in college this Fall.

 

  Michael Pirovolus is phenomenal and inspirational young man. At the end of his freshman year, he began to suffer from some challenging health issues which ended his football career.  Having been a team MVP, he then channeled his energy into sports he could continue to play, like basketball and volleyball. He also channeled this energy into his music and dance (he plays a plethora of instruments), into his AP studies, into his participation in speech and debate, and into his church and community. Being a leader is what he does.  Serving as a voice of our high school, he was a member of a 4-2 team composed of Northeast Ohio’s top students in World Debate at last summer’s NSDA Nationals in Dallas, as well as finishing 7^th in the nation in storytelling at the same competition.  He is the first individual in Ohio to ever finish so high in two separate events at the National Championships.  Michael succeeds, leads,and inspires.

 

 

 

   Thank you to the following Rotarians for their volunteer efforts on November 21, 2015. These individuals volunteered for Salvation Army Bell-Ringing on a very cold, rainy day at Fisher Foods on Whipple/Tusc.  

 

The volunteers are as follows: Amanda Tietze, Craig Young, Tom Grace, Jack Barkan, Bob Winther, Bruce Hale, Paul White, Ella Vehmas (Youth Exchange Student) and Tony Pierce.

  You are invited to a special Holiday Luncheon Joint Meeting of District 6650 Division 1A of the Rotary Clubs of Austintown, Boardman, Canfield, Poland, Struthers and Youngstown.  The date of this event is Thursday, December 10, 2015.  The Meet & Greet begins at 11:30 a.m with lunch at 12:00 p.m.  This event will take place at the Holiday Inn-Boardman, 710 South Ave., Youngstown, OH 44512.  The cost is $15.00 per person and an RSVP is requested by December 4, 2015.  The keynote speaker will be Rotary International Director, Jennifer Jones.

  The Rotary Club of Canton will participate in Canton's "Light-up Downtown" event on Thursday, December 3, 2015 from 5:30-8:30 pm.  We will open the Rotary office to the public, and we will have card stock, stickers, scissors, markers and other items to make Holiday cards for our military servicemen and -women who can not be home for the Holidays.  Cookies will be provided.

 

Any Canton Rotarians wanting to donate some of their time to this worthwhile endeavor are asked to contact the Rotary office at (330) 452-2882. Any amount of time you can give that evening would be greatly appreciated! Be sure to bring your kids or grandkids!

 

 

 

 

   Rotarians, it is once again the "giving" time of year when we remember the exceptional service the staff of Meyer's Lake Ballroom/Mr. Mike's Catering has provided to us throughout the year.  We will begin taking donations for these fine individuals beginning Friday, December 4th as well as Friday, December 11th.

 

Any monetary amount is appreciated!  Just look for the "tip" containers which will be located on the attendance table to make your donation.

 

 

 

  Each October is the annual fund drive for the Canton Rotary Charitable Fund. As Rotarians, we all subscribe to “Service Above Self”. The annual Charitable Fund drive is a way we can all follow the Service Above Self motto. The annual drive is critical to having the funds to support our traditional local projects such as: Rotary Scouts, Philomatheon Society, Sister Rotary Club in Dominican Republic, Junior Achievement, Stark County Library, Exchange Students (inbound and outbound), Project Warm and many more. We recently have not been able to grant funds to  all the worthy programs and charities that we would want to support.

I feel we are at a critical stage for our Rotary Club, a point where we need to show the community we are a valuable asset to the future growth of Canton and are an integral part of the change in Canton. One way to accomplish this is to have projects branded under Canton Rotary that are visible and recognized by the city and everyone who visits. For Canton Rotary to be able to make an impact that is permanent and branded in Canton, we need a healthy charitable fund.

I ask that each Rotarian donate to the Charitable Fund this year. While no donation is too small, we are asking that each Rotarian donate at least $100. If you cannot donate $100, please donate $25 or whatever amount you are able. Personally, I am doubling my donation from previous years, and ask everyone to do the same if possible.

We made a nice splash with our Canton Rotary Oktoberfest, let’s keep the momentum going with this year’s Canton Rotary Charitable Fund drive. Our goal this year is $15,000. Please join me in this journey so when we say we are “The Finest Rotary Club in the World” we know that each and every one of us is a part of making that claim true.

  At our weekly meeting on November 20, 2015, President Paul White announced a discount on the remaining bags of coffee from the coffee fundraiser.  He informed the members the coffee was now being sold at $5.00 a bag.  Paul also gave a reminder about the Salvation Army Bell-Ringing scheduled for the following day at Fisher Foods at Whipple/Tusc location.  Paul also reminded the members there would be NO MEETING on Friday, November 27th due to the Thanksgiving Holiday.

 

President Paul informed the members there was a Rotary Foundation Paul Harris Fellow Challenge envelope at each place setting.  You must return your donation in this envelope to the Rotary office prior to December 18, 2015.  The winner will be drawn on January 1, 2016.

 

Club Secretary Michelle Mullaly welcomed the following guests to our meeting: Jean McFarren, Rob Schreffler, Tom Haas, Erin Milano, Rob Roland, Jennifer Williams, Mike Jenkins, Paige Gallagher, Michael Pirovolos, Jennifer Shaw, David Kliem and Pat Albacete.

 

The "Happy Bucks" news was then provided by the following Rotarians: Rebecca Marchino was very excited to announce that her 3rd grandchild was born last Friday; MJ Albacete stated he works harder in retirement to help accreditation of museum.  He is now on the Board of OHC in Columbus and will be spending a lot of his time down there; David Beule was pleased to announce the release of the winter brew on Tuesday at 6pm; Michelle Mullaly was very happy to announce the amazing world premier taking place tomorrow night of Composer Stephen Melillo's "Lightfall" with the Canton Symphony Orchestra.
