JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT IS BACK IN ACTION! WE CAN HELP MCKINLEY JUNIORS PREPARE TO GET A JOB!

Canton Rotary has a long history of working with Junior Achievement to bring lessons on Financial Literacy, Entrepreneurship, and Work Readiness to students in our area, particularly Canton City Schools.

This fits in perfectly with Rotary's Vocational pillar, sharing insight into one's career experiences. It also fits with our club's mission of helping our local youth.

Here's an opportunity for us to help out JA:

- When: Tuesday May 10th
- Where: Kent State - Stark Branch
- What: Lessons and mentoring on Resumes, Applications, Interviewing, Dressing for Success, and discussions on careers, work, etc.
- To Whom: 150 McKinley High School Juniors
- Commitment: 9 AM to 1 PM (if you can't make the whole time, slots will be open to have a working lunch with a small group of 7 - 8 students for personal discussions, two mentors per table, approximately one hour commitment minimum.

At this point, I believe JA could use as many volunteers as possible, to make it easier for each mentor.
JA will provide basically all materials needed, plus training. You just need to provide your time and your personal experience from your professional career.

There will be folks there from:

Citizen’s Bank- Melissa Herdon, Heather Sullivan, Ta’Shea  Johnson
Great Work Employment- Cody and Angelina (Rae-lin email)
Goodwill: Emma Walsh and Cynthia Goodall
Shearer’s: Kim Davenport
SCHRA: TBD- Brenda Basso

PRESIDENT MARK'S WEEKLY INSIGHTS

Fellow Rotarians,

VP Paul started off the month with a great lunch presentation from Ohio State Treasurer Robert Sprague. His comments were on point and insightful as he answered the many questions presented. This week is yet another excellent presentation and I hope you will reach out to a fellow Canton Rotarian that you haven't seen in a while to bring them with you. It's time to bring our Friday club lunches back to an attendance near where we were pre-Covid.

I must apologize, as I will be unable to attend this Friday. My son is completing his USAF flight training on the B-52 and Tracie and I are doing a quick drive down to Shreveport to see him. I'm most certain that I have left you in excellent hands while I am away.

Please remember that I asked for several volunteers to assist with two non-check-writing projects coming up, one of which is Backpack The Bus at Centennial Plaza April 23rd from 11:30-4:00. I need volunteers to help coordinate the event, which includes buying food items, running the on-site food drive, and setting up/coordinating face painting and corn-hole games. Please reach out to Jennie or Paula to assist. They can use some of this help BEFORE the event!

See you after Easter!

President Mark

WHAT'D I MISS LAST WEEK?
At our regular meeting last Friday April 1, President Mark welcomed approximately 35 Rotarians to hear Ohio Treasurer of State, Robert Sprague.

In Secretary Paula's absence, President Mark presented the following historical (hysterical?) info:

Of course, last Friday was April Fool's Day. Although there is some question as to when this started, it is believed that it may have grown out of the medieval Feast of Fools, which was celebrated on January 1st.

On This Day in History:

1748 - The lost Roman city of Pompeii was rediscovered by Spanish engineer, Rocque Joaquin de Alcubierre.
1976 - Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne formed Apple Computer, Inc.
2001 - The Netherlands was the first country in the world to make same-sex marriage legal.
2019 - US online sales took over retail sales for the first time in history, with 11.813% for online compared to 11.807% for general merchandise stores.

Fun Fact for April Fool's:

1957 - The BBC broadcasts the 'Great Spaghetti Tree' hoax:

A 3-minute film shown on the current affairs program, Panorama, portrayed a Swiss family apparently harvesting spaghetti from a tree. Later, a number of viewers contacted the BBC to inquire where to find and how to grow such a plant. The hoax is regarded as one of the best April Fool's Jokes in history.
