 Topic: Junior Achievement is the Rookie League for Workforce Development!
|
Dawn Campanelli, President of Junior Achievement of East Central Ohio, will inform the Rotary Club of Canton how JA is the 'Rookie League' for Workforce Development. As Dawn explains, "Every winning athletic team has a feeder system to help with age-level skill building and practice for success. Throughout our communities there are little, midget, elementary, middle, travel and high school leagues of all kinds to help prepare students to excel in sports. We know what a professional athlete looks like and the determination and opportunities afforded to them to reach the top. A well prepared workforce needs to be developed in the exact same fashion. Junior Achievement is the Rookie League for Workforce Development."
Ms. Campanelli was hired as President of Junior Achievement of East Central Ohio in October, 2010. Since that time, she has lead the organization through a significant growth period, as shown by a growth of 47% in the number of JA classes and students impacted in the last three years alone. In addition, during Dawn's tenure, JAECO has remained financially stable and has been able to grow resources, both volunteer and financial, to accommodate the increased number of programs. Ms. Campanelli has also successfully worked with other community groups and non-profits to extend the reach of JA's programs.
JA USA has recognized Dawn's leadership, awarding her their Karl Flemke Pioneer Achievement Award in 2013, and recognizing JAECO with their '5 Star Award for Operational Effectiveness' in 2104 and their 'National Peak Performance Award', also in 2013.
Prior to joining Junior Achievement, Dawn served as the Chief Marketing Office for Day Ketterer, Ltd. Attorneys at Law, and Director of Client Development for Black, McCuskey, Souers, & Arbaugh, LPA. She also operated her own public relations and marketing firm, DayBreak Communications Inc.
Ms. Campanelli is involved with many community groups, ans is a graduate of the 19th class of Leadership Stark County and was inducted into the Stark County YWCA Women's Hall of Fame this year.
Dawn graduated from Canton south High School and received a B.A. from the University of Akron, with Magna Cum Laude Honors with a double major in Business & Organizational communications and Political Science.
Dawn and her husband of 25 years, Nick, live in Plain Township and are parents of Alyssa West, Tyler Campanelli, and Carrie Campanelli, and grandparents to grandson, Ayden West.

WHAT A DAY! The Rotary Club of Canton had Chamber of Commerce weather for their 2015 golf outing on Friday, August 21. It’s hard to say anyone was a loser between the great Old Carolina BBQ lunch and the fun that was had on the Tam O’Shanter Dales course. However, there were winners, and those winners deserve recognition. After the dust settled and all 75 golfers were accounted for, we had a winner: In first place, the team led by Canton Rotarians Drew Pelger and Chris Burt, along with Derek Gordon and Roger Evans. In second place was the team of Jeff Scott, Frank Leopold, Joe Gazzo and Mike Gazzo. In third place was the team of Mike Rogers, Paul Klotz, Mark Klein and Steve Berry. Closest to the pin was won by Nick Perini on hole #3 and by Vincenzo Gazzo on hole #14. Long putt was won by F. Prasnal on the 18th hole. Men’s long drive was won by Derek Gordon on hole #4 and Andy Bourquin on hole #12. Women’s long drive was won by Sarah Stromme on hole #7 and hole #16. Finally, Derek Gordon was the winner of the putting contest. If you see a young man cruising around Canton in a BMW convertible with a big smile on his face, it’s likely Derek. A big thank you to Cain BMW for donating the car for a weekend.
In addition to all the wonderful memories that were created during the outing, we managed to raise more than $2,000 for the Club. Much of this money was raised through the generosity of our hole sponsors. Thank you for all your support!
In closing, I realize there was a loser at this year’s golf outing, and that loser is salad. Rotarians don’t eat salad or at least don’t eat salad at golf outings. Every year we try to tweak the amount of food we order so we have a little bit left but not so much that we are wasteful.
Next year we will be ordering more banana pudding and less salad!

Attendance is a very important aspect of the Rotary Club of Canton. We have had several members recently question what constitutes attendance at a meeting to qualify for perfect attendance. We would like to bring to your attention a section of the Constitution of the Rotary Club of Canton, Ohio, Inc. This Constitution was approved on July 11, 2014:
Article 9 – Attendance
Section 1-General Provisions
“Each member should attend this Club’s regular meetings and engage in this club’s service projects, other events and activities. A member shall be counted as attending a regular meeting if the member is present for at least 60% of the meeting, or is present and is called away un-expectedly and subsequently produces evidence to the satisfaction of the Board that such action was reasonable, or makes up for an absence in any of the following ways:
(a) 14 Days Before or After the Meeting. If, within fourteen (14) days before or after the regular time for that meeting, the member
(1) attends at least 60% of the regular meeting of another club, of a satellite club meeting of another club, or of a provisional club; or
(2) attends a regular meeting of a Rotaract or Interact club, Rotary Community Corps, or Rotary Community Corps, or Rotary Fellowship; or
(3) attends a convention of RI, a council on legislation, an international assembly, a Rotary institute for past and present officers of RI, a Rotary institute for past, present, and incoming officers of RI, or any other meeting convened with the approval of the Board of Directors of RI or the president of RI acting on behalf of the Board of Directors of RI, a Rotary multizone conference, a meeting of a committee of RI, a Rotary district conference, a Rotary district assembly, any district committee meeting held by direction of the district governor, or a regularly announced intercity meeting of Rotary clubs; or
(4) is present at the usual time and place of a regular meeting of another club for the purpose of attending such meeting, but that club is not meeting at that time or place; or
(5) attends and participates in a club service project or a club-sponsored community event or meeting authorized by the Board; or
(6) attends a Board meeting or, if authorized by the Board, a meeting of a service committee to which the member is assigned; or
(7) participates through a club web site in an interactive activity requiring an average of 30 minutes of participation.”
**Everyone attending a regular meeting of the Rotary Club of Canton is asked to stay at least 45 minutes to receive attendance for that date. Our Club’s meeting time runs from 11:45 am – 1:00 pm.
If you are unable to attend a meeting date for the allotted amount of time, we ask that you attend and receive a makeup from another Rotary Club.

Tickets are now available for the upcoming Canton Rotary Oktoberfest!

This event will take place on Thursday, September 17, 2015, from 4:30-8:30 p.m. in Downtown Canton and we will need approximately 60 volunteers to make this event succeed!  At our weekly meeting on August 28, 2015, President Paul White asked Rotarians to keep Rotarian Elbert Magoon in their prayers. Elbert is dealing with some medical issues, but Elbert states he is doing fine. He also reminded the "Oktoberfest" committee there is a brief meeting immediately following the regular meeting.
President Paul then welcomed all of our friends from the Rotary Club of Massillon who joined their regular weekly meeting with the Rotary Club of Canton's.
Club Secretary Michelle Mullaly brought the members up to date on the "Oktoberfest" which will be held on September 17, 2015. She reminded the members there are sign-up sheets for volunteers as well as tickets are available to purchase for a pre-sale price of $30.00.
Michelle then welcomed the following guests to our meeting: Ken McPeek, Scott Kettler and William Hannon.
The "Happy Bucks" news was then presented by the following Rotarians: Massillon Mayor Catazzaro-Perry congratulated the Massillon football head coach on their win last night; Mark Clendenin was happy the kids were home for the summer but he's also happy that they are headed back to school; Rick Taylor donated $10 because he was very happy to see all his "City mates" from Massillon; Massillon President Richard Regula donated $5 while he thanked his fellow Massillon Rotarians for "crossing over" to attend the meeting. Richard was also happy his son started a new job and his other child went back to The Ohio State University.
