The Rotary Club of Canton's annual golf outing will be held this Friday on the Tam O'Shanter DALES Course.  Canton Rotarian, Nick Perini, will be serving as general chairman.

 

Lunch will be served starting at 12 noon with a modified shotgun start at 1 p.m.  The charge for the golf outing including lunch will be $50.00 for all participants.  If you are coming for LUNCH ONLY, it is no-charge to those members who are prepaid and $12.00 for those members who have not prepaid.

 

The lunch will consist of Old Carolina Pulled Pork/Chicken, Baked Beans, Coleslaw, Garden Salad with Italian and Ranch Dressing, Banana Pudding and cookies along with beverages.  The total outing fee includes 18 holes, a cart and beer, pop and water on the course.

Thursday Sept. 17, will be the inaugural Canton Rotary Oktoberfest. Our goals are to make this event one that elevates the name and image of Canton Rotary in our community, one that becomes our signature fundraiser for our club’s charitable fund, and one that is a fun event with lots of fellowship via participation from Canton Rotarians. It will also be an event that will increase awareness of Canton Rotary and our work in the community, plus be an excellent vehicle for membership recruitment.

 

Tickets will be available for purchase beginning with the August 28th meeting.  They are also available online at cantonrotary.org.

What is the Canton Rotary Oktoberfest? Our Oktoberfest will feature beer from 8 local breweries, as well as 2 wine distributors. The ticket includes 10 beer or wine samples. We will have local downtown restaurants as our food vendors, and we will also have entertainment including a German style “Oktoberfest” band.

During our regular Friday meetings we will be having a sign-up sheet available for our new upcoming fundraiser "Oktoberfest".  This event will take place on Thursday, September 17, 2015, from 4:30-8:30 p.m. in Downtown Canton and we will need approximately 60 volunteers to make this event succeed!  Please consider asking your family and friends to volunteer with you!  

At our weekly meeting on August 14, 2015, President Paul White asked Rotarians to continue to keep Rotarian John Schumacher in their prayers.  John is still dealing with medical issues.  He also reminded the Board members about the brief meeting immediately following the regular meeting with District Governor Joe Belinsky.  President Paul asked each Rotarian to consider signing up to volunteer for the "Oktoberfest".  He stated we will need every member to make this event a success.

 

President Paul reminded everyone that next week's meeting will be offsite.  This will be the annual golf outing held at Tam O'Shanter golf course (please see story).

 

Youth Exchange Chairwoman, Amy Mustafaga, introduced Canton Rotary's Exchange Student, Ella Maria Henriika Vehmas, from Finland. Ella was escorted by her Host Mother, Holly Gartner.  Ella will be attending Glenoak High School.

 

PDG/PP Dave Ewing took to the podium and presented Canton Rotarian Jim Lockshin with his PHF+2 pin.

 

Club Secretary Michelle Mullaly brought the members up to date on the "Oktoberfest" which will be held on September 17, 2015.

 

Michelle then welcomed the following guests to our meeting:  Dave Baloun, Jim Kling, Assistant Governor Bob Schaffner (Plain), Holly Gartner, Ella Vehmas and Shirley Lockshin.

 

The "Happy Bucks" news was then presented by the following Rotarians:  Virginia Neutzling wished Ward Scott a very Happy Birthday and thanked him for the ice cream treat he provided to everyone during last week's meeting; Rick Taylor was happy that Canton Rotarian Ron Miller agreed to be an "Oktoberfest" sponsor due to his winning "Hole-in-One" shot at Alliance Country Club; Bob Pattison was very happy to welcome our newest Exchange Student, Ella Vehmas, as well as our District Governor, Joe Belinsky, to the meeting; Rebecca Marchino was very happy to inform the members of the health status of Canton Rotarian Becky Clark's husband.  Mark Clark sustained a heart attack and had to have triple bypass surgery while in Haiti.  He was doing so well that Becky was able to transport him back to Florida where he will continue to recover; Ryan Parkinson was so happy that he provided $5 to the Happy Bucks jar.  He also was excited because he has two singing events scheduled this weekend; Amanda Tietze was happy to announce that her kids would be going back to school next week; and finally Bob Matthews was happy that the MAPS Museum would again have a vintage combat aircraft on display and can be viewed this weekend.

In the 1930s, Ole Kirk Christiansen, a Danish carpenter, had a wooden sign hanging on his wall that read, Det bedste er ikke for godt: "Only the best is good enough." Today, Christiansen is remembered as the inventor of Lego, the colorful plastic bricks beloved by children around the world. But in the early days of the Lego company, its signature product was a wooden duck – one built to the highest standards, out of aged beech, with three coats of clear varnish. Lego's company history tells how Christiansen used his ducks to teach a lesson in quality to his son, Godtfred Kirk:

One evening, when I came into the office, I said to my father: "It's been a good day today, Dad. We've earned a little more." "Oh," said Dad, "what do you mean?" "Well, I've just been to the station with two boxes of our toy ducks for the Danish Co op. Normally they get three coats of varnish, but since it's for the Co-op, I only gave them two. So I saved the business a bit of money." He looked at me in dismay. "Godtfred, fetch those boxes back. Unpack them and give the ducks another coat of varnish. You're not going to bed until the work's done – and you'll do it all on your own." There was no arguing with Dad. And it was a lesson for me about what quality meant.

Today, Lego's quality standards are legendary, and its products are the most popular toys in the world: Lego pieces outnumber humans 86 to 1.

We all recognize that this success stems directly from Lego's business practices – its insistence on quality, efficiency, and innovation. I compare this with our efforts in governance and accountability in Rotary, and realize that sometimes we fall short of the standards expected.

The leaders at the Rotary International, zone, district, and club levels have to maintain the highest standards in governance. The RI president and directors must serve the membership in a meaningful manner; zone leaders must deliver on the investment Rotary makes in them; district leaders must provide dynamic leadership in the district and focus on transparency in accounting and timely reporting of financials; and club leaders must adhere to proper reporting functions and get their clubs onto Rotary Club Central.

Just as Christiansen refused to consider sending a lesser product to any of his clients, so should we refuse to consider giving a lesser effort to any of our work. We must always demand the best of ourselves – in our professional lives, and especially in our Rotary work.

For in Rotary, what is our product? It is not wooden ducks or plastic bricks. It is education, water, health, and peace. It is hope, and it is life itself. For this work, only our best is good enough. I ask you all to remember this – and to do your very best to Be a Gift to the World.
