PLEASE JOIN US! OUR OWN MICHELLE CHARLES, CURRENT GOVERNOR OF DISTRICT 6650, VISITS OUR CLUB!

Michelle has been President & CEO of the Canton Symphony Orchestra since 2011. Previously serving in all capacities of the organization as chorus member and volunteer, board trustee and staff, she continues to be a driving force behind the increasing notoriety of the Canton Symphony.  Under her leadership, the Canton Symphony has brought in guest artists including Grammy-Award winners Bela Fleck and Sylvia McNair, and has collaborated with numerous organizations including the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum, Canton Museum of Art, Massillon Museum of Art, Stark Parks, and the Dancing Wheels.

Michelle joined the Rotary Club of Canton in October 2011 as a way to meet people in the community. She loved the fellowship of the group and quickly became involved.
Michelle has served her club as Secretary, President Elect, and President in 2018-19. She has served as a Board Trustee and has chaired the Oktoberfest and Pack the Bus committees.

Michelle holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music History and Theory from Hiram College and an MBA in Leadership from Southern New Hampshire University. She received a Fundraising Certificate from Boston University (2020) and a Negotiations & Leadership Certificate from Harvard University (2021).She also serves on the board of The Friends of the Summit (91.3 FM) where she is Board Chair. She was a member of the 27th Class of Leadership Stark County, and is currently a member of Woman’s Impact, Inc. In 2012, she was honored to be named one of the Twenty Under 40 and in 2018 was inducted to the YWCA of Stark County’s Women’s Hall of Fame.

Michelle and her husband JC (also a Rotarian) got married right before the pandemic which gave them what she calls “the world’s longest honeymoon”. Together they have six sons (three each) ranging in age from 14 to 25, and one crazy golden retriever named Bea. In her “spare” time, she and her husband JC enjoy hiking, and traveling.

Michelle is thrilled to be sharing her passion for Rotary with all of you and is looking forward to serving under the first female Rotary International President.

SPECIAL DESSERT! TAGGART'S ICE CREAM! IN HONOR OF DISTRICT GOVERNOR MICHELLE CHARLES!
PRESIDENT RICK ASKS: WILL YOU JOIN US!
Hi my friends.

I have a special request for you this week: PLEASE COME TO OUR MEETING THIS FRIDAY!

Your fellow Canton Rotarian, Michelle Charles, has stepped up to be the District Governor of Rotary District 6650 this year, which is both an honor for her (and a lot of time and hard work!) and an honor for our Club! She joins a long list of Canton Rotarians who have served our district as Governors, including current members Dave Ewing and Bob Pattison.

DG Michelle will be visiting us this Friday, to give us an update the District and RI and to let us know what her ambitions and goals are for the District during her term. I know a little bit of what those goals are, and they are very exciting! PLEASE COME AND JOIN US!

Besides a delicious meal from Mr. Mike's Catering (see the menu above), we will be having a special dessert in DG Michelle's honor: TAGGART'S ICE CREAM, best in the world! Plus you'll be able to enjoy the company of your fellow Rotarians! After the last few years of diminished activity and limited socialization, won't it be nice to enjoy the company of your friends in Rotary, as well as hear about the wonderful things that Rotary is doing here and around the world to help those that need it!

Some come on down to Christ Presbyterian Church this Friday at 11:45! Be there, or be SQUARE!
PERMANENT ZOOM LINK FOR MEETINGS
Thanks to Jennie George, we now have a new recurring Zoom link for those of you who prefer to attend on-line.

SAVE THE DATE! SEPTEMBER 2ND! ROTARY SOCIAL AT CANTON ART MUSUEM

Social committee chairs, Sue Marzano and Becky Clark, have announced a new Canton Rotary social event, a soiree at the Canton Museum of Art for First Friday September 2, 2022!

The plan is to meet in the Great Court at 5:30 for socialization and camaraderie (cash bar available, but no drinks in the galleries), then those that wish, can visit the exhibits in the museum galleries:

- Unseen, The Process and Art of Printmaking
- Continued Continuing, Paintings by Amy Casey
- Lessons and Landscapes, Legacy of Gerry Bernhardt
- Illusions: Seeing is Deceiving, art from the CMA Private Collection
- Shadows, the Art of Marcus Schafer

(Here's a link to the Canton Museum of Art's website, if you'd like more info on the exhibits: http://www.cantonart.org/

If attendees are interested, we can then adjourn for dinner at a local establishment, but Sue and Becky will need to know who is interested so they can make reservations. You can reach Sue via email at ammarzano@aep.com or cell at 330-312-0486.

NEW SARTA BUS SHELTER PROJECT & SAVE THE DATE!
Sue Marzano and Rich Dever, Co-Chairs of our Club's new SARTA Bus shelter project, announced the details of their project at last week's meeting.

After members Dan and Suzette Matthews saw bus shelters adorned with the famous Rotary logo on a trip to Turks & Caicos, they brought the idea back to Sue, who, as one of 11 children, used SARTA's service extensively as a child. Having experienced waiting for a bus in the elements, including rain, sleet, and snow (and having to sometimes spend the day with wet socks), she got together with Rich and they hashed out a plan to see if we could partner with SARTA on some new shelters at their bus stops.

After considerable discussion and coordination, SARTA chose a site at 4th St. and Hartford Ave SE for the first new Rotary shelter, as it is one of the busiest stops in the city. Cost to build a new shelter is $8,000, and, thanks to the generosity of a couple of Rotarians (who wish to remain nameless), as well as a donation from our Rotary Club of Canton Charitable Fund, the new shelter is now scheduled to be built!

Sue and Rich are now working on raising funds for the second bus shelter, with a "Dine-to-Donate" event being held on Monday August 22, 2022 at Kozmo's Grille in Massillon from 5 to 8 PM. During that time, 20% of your food purchases will be donated to the Canton Rotary Bus Shelter Project. Just print the flyer below, or take a screenshot, and show it to your server at Kozmo's when you're there.

The flyer below also shows some other ways to donate if you wish to. Please reach out to Sue or Rich if you have any questions or comments.

WHAT'D I MISS LAST WEEK!
At our regular lunch meeting last Friday July 22, 2022, President Rick welcomed 35 Rotarians, plus 5 guests (Emily Callan/Stark District Library, speaker Don Johnson and guest Brett Fegan/Kimble Companies, Denny Dulabaum and Larry Horton (District Governor from Dist. 5495 in Arizona)/guests of PDG Dave Ewing).

Don Johnson gave a very interesting talk on Kimble Recycling & Disposal, detailing their development from a private dump site on a farm, to a modern, regional trash and recycling company, helping to manage all of the waste that we generate. Don also described what happens to the materials we put in our recycling bins and how we can improve how we manage that.

Secretary Paula announced some of the local activities that were happening last weekend, and then handled our Happy Bucks:
