TOMMY BRUNO, GM/EXEC.DIR. WAPS-FM "THE SUMMIT"

Mr. Tommy Bruno is the General Manager and Executive Director of WAPS-FM “The Summit,” an award-winning, public radio music station broadcasting in Akron - Canton at 91.3FM, throughout Youngstown and western Pennsylvania at 90.7FM, and 90.1FM Athens, Ohio - worldwide via mobile and thesummit.fm.

Bruno is responsible for fundraising, business development, and the strategic growth plans of the radio station, and its brands. He also works closely with Friends of The Summit, independent support, and a management organization dedicated to growing the mission.

Prior to being named general manager in 2000, Mr. Bruno served as a producer for WJW-TV, a FOX network television station in Cleveland, Ohio. Together with a talented team at The Summit, Bruno co-created and operates three award-winning online, streaming radio stations: “KIDJAM!™” Radio kidjamradio.com featuring positive music and programming for young listeners and “Rock and Recovery™,” rockandrecovery.com, mixes music with stories that will inspire listeners, and messages to give strength and hope, and The 330 – the past, present, and future of Northeast Ohio music.

For his efforts, Bruno has received a variety of regional and national awards. Bruno has served on numerous nonprofit boards and advisory groups throughout the region including the Akron Community Foundation, Northern Ohio Golf Charities, SEI Summit Education Initiative, Akron Public Schools, John Carroll University Alumni Association, Carson Higgins Memorial Foundation, and Walsh Jesuit High School.

FELLOWSHIP GATHERING 4 PM ON 12/16/21 AT CANTON BREWING COMPANY

Fellowship Chair Shawn Dougherty wants to remind us all that there will be a Fellowship Gathering/Happy Hour at the Canton Brewing Company on Thursday 12/16/21 starting at 4 PM.

We encourage all Canton Rotarians to attend, and to bring family, friends or any other guests who might like to come along for a pleasant evening. No reservations are necessary, just show up and look for Shawn and other members.

For your info, Canton Brewing Company lists these beers on their website as currently on tap: Carpe Noctem Coffee Porter (brewed with Carpe Diem coffee), Slurp Key Lime Sour Beer, Tuscora German-style Pilsner, Luplin Wave IPA, Black Jack Dunkel, Keanu IPA, and Cafe Society Cream Ale. of course, they have a full menu and other adult beverages, too.

GET READY FOR OUR "SWEET" HOLIDAY GATHERING FRI. DECEMBER 17TH!

Happy Holidays Rotarians!

We hope that you are planning to attend our last meeting of 2021 on Friday, December 17^th.

Doors open at 11:30am and it will be a time filled with great food, great fun, and great entertainment!

This year sees the return of our "Sweet Treat Raffle” where you will have the opportunity to win a variety of donated dessert items: for example, cookies, breads, pies, and cakes, which will make for a "sweet" fundraiser with proceeds benefiting our Charitable Fund!

Each Rotarian is asked to bring their favorite culinary/holiday sweet treat that day to be raffled off at the meeting. It can be store bought or homemade so don’t let a lack of talent in the kitchen stop you from participating!

When you arrive, you will be able to purchase raffle tickets (2 for $1.00 or 12 for $5.00) and during lunch you will be able to put your tickets in the boxes for the items you would like to win. The more you buy the better your odds are to take home a delicious treat for your holiday gathering!

Following our delicious holiday meal you will enjoy the incredible talents of organist Heather Cooper for a delightful holiday music concert played on the Gibbs-Pryor organ in the Christ Church Sanctuary. During that time, our trusty elves will pull our treat winners and following the concert, you can stop in and pick up your delicious winnings!

This will be a great day to catch up with your Rotary friends or to bring a guest! Please be sure to RSVP to the online invitation when it is sent you to your email and add this special meeting to your calendar to attend!

    1776 – General George Washington arrives at the banks for the Delaware River in preparation of his famous crossing that took place one month later.
    1947 – The movie that catapulted Marlo Brando into movie stardom, “A Streetcar Named Desire”, opened on Broadway.
1967 – The first human heart transplant took place in Cape Town, South Africa. 53 year old Louis Washkansky received his heart from a 25 year old woman who perished in a car accident. Unfortunately he passed 18 days later from double pneumonia.
    1979 – The last AMC Pacer rolled off the assembly line.

Weird Fact:
Today was the day that Ozzy Osbourne bit the head off of a bat during a live concert. An audience member threw it up on stage and Ozzy did the deed not realizing it was a live bat until too late. But the bat got his justice by biting Ozzy too. Ozzy had to be treated for rabies. (Editor's note: no word as to whether Ozzy was a Rotarian!) We're back in Beautiful Downtown Canton, at the historic Christ Presbyterian Church at 530 Tuscarawas Street West. Parking lot and entrance are on the west side of the building. Meeting room at the top of the stairs and an elevator is available. Meals are provided by our old friend Terry from Mr. Mike's Catering.
