At our Zoom meeting on April 9, 2021, President Drew Pelger opened the meeting by welcoming a total of 30 Canton Rotarians (live at John's Bar and also via Zoom), as well as our guest speakers,  Bill and Marcia Shearer, and Mark Clark, Becky Clark's husband.
Secretary Paula Mastroianni presented the following information:
Interesting historical facts for the day:
  • 1865 – Confederate General Robert E. Lee and 26,765 troops surrender to US Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in North Virginia, ending the Civil War
  • 1866 –  The Civil Rights Bill passes even though President Andrew Johnson vetoed it.
  • 1968 –   Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was buried in Atlanta.
  • 2002 –  Queen Elizabeth's mother, the Queen Mother, was buried on this date. This is interesting, given that it was announced that Prince Phillip, Queen Elizabeth’s husband, had just passed away last Friday, April 9th, as well. April 9th doesn't seem to be a good day for the Queen.
  • 2005 – In other British news, Prince Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles on this date, further evidence that April 9 is a bad day for the Queen.
Rotary Fun Facts:
The Rotary Foundation has spent over $3 billion on programs and projects to support humanitarian efforts and scholarships through its 100-year history.
Happy Bucks:
Paula Mastroianni also received "Happy Bucks" from PP Rick Taylor, PP Dan Matthews, Becky Clark, Jim Molnar and herself.
President Drew made the following announcements and updates:
  • The 2020-21 Annual Charitable Fund Drive (editor's note: Please give!);
  • The 2020-21 Unevent Raffle (editor's note: Please buy tickets when available!).
  • All of the speakers for the month of April will be presenting their program in-person at John's Bar and Grille.
