The last speaker that was originally scheduled this spring for our in-person meetings at the Krassas Center (which were postponed due to COVID) is back! Kelli Viscounte from 'Love Our Community' will join us this Friday, October 30 for an update on this Lake Township organization.
In the spring of 2016, the dream began. A dream of businesses, churches, schools, and individuals coming together to provide an event for the Lake Township community - a simple egg hunt. This event was a collaboration that surprised many but gave birth to the belief that TOGETHER we could make an impact to last.
From this effort, Love Our Community was born. As more and more community needs were identified, this same collaboration, now formally organized as Love Our Community, a 501c(3), continues to address community needs in Lake Township.
In 2019, Love Our Community purchased the former Lake Center Christian School building, located at 1116 Woodland Street SW in Hartville. The plan is to transform the building into a community resource that offers stable housing for individuals and families facing homelessness. By meeting basic needs, like food and shelter, the LOC building will help residents focus on building a better life. Current plans include an “anchor family” residence and four additional apartment units.
Kelli founded Love Our Community on a dream to mobilize communities to come together to meet needs that are often unseen.
Her favorite movie is 'Remember the Titans', with 'Rocky' as a close second. She is often heard saying, “it takes us all!”
Kelli and her husband Ron have six kids and one beautiful granddaughter.
At our Zoom meeting on October 23, 2020, President Drew Pelger opened the meeting by welcoming a total of 29 Canton Rotarians ('live' at John's Bar and also via Zoom) and our speaker, Shaun Eller, COO, from Ohio Gratings, Inc.
President Drew also filled in for our club Secretary, Paula Mastroianni, and presented some interesting historical facts for the day plus the following information on the history of Rotary's Polio eradication efforts: On September 29, 1979, RI President James L. Bomar, Jr. put the first drops of oral polio vaccine into a child's mouth, launching the Philippine poliomyelitis immunization effort. RI President Bomar and Philippine's Minister of Health signed an agreement committing Rotary International and the government of the Philippines to a joint multiyear effort to immunize about 6 million children against polio, at a cost of about $760,000. This was basically the first salvo in Rotary's war against polio!
President Drew also received "Happy Bucks" from Robert Matthews and Dave Ewing.
Announcements:
PDG/PP Bob Pattison updated our club members on the history of Rotary's challenge to eradicate Polio. Bob encouraged everyone to make a donation to PolioPlus and announced that anyone donating $20 or more will receive double Paul Harris Fellow recognition points and will be entered into a raffle to win a US $1 commemorative coin.

Longtime Rotarian, James A. Markling, passed away on Friday, October 23, 2020. The following obituary was posted in the Canton Repository on October 25, 2020.
James A. Markling (Jim) went home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 23, 2020, at the age of 93. Jim was born in Canton, Ohio, on February 6, 1927, to Helen and James Markling. During his high school years at Lincoln HS, Jim was an outstanding athlete and active in many organizations. Upon graduation in 1944, he served his country as a corpsman in the Navy (World War II). After graduating from The Ohio State University, Jim returned to Canton and married his college sweetheart (Marilyn Goetz) in 1950. A believer in giving back to his community, he was a 60-year member of The Canton Rotary Club. The M&G Oil Company was founded by Jim and his father-in law. But in 1964, Jim made his dream come true by building a golf course. In 1972, Mohican Hill Golf Club opened. For 45 years, the infectious smile and genuine kindness of Jim Markling greeted golfers at one of Ohio's finest courses.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, (Marilyn Kay Krauter); his wife of 42 years, (Marilyn Goetz Markling); and his wife of 21 years, (June Warren Markling). He will be greatly missed by his three children: Tom (Karen) Markling, Jan Markling (Sue Ramsey) and Dave Markling (Sandy Beros); sister, (Carol Oberlin); three grandchildren, one great grandchild; and numerous other family and friends.The family offers its sincere gratitude to our family of care givers – his "other" daughters. Your love and devotion were a gift we will forever treasure.
Family and friends will meet on Wednesday at 10 a.m., at Christ the Servant Parish, 833 39th St. N.W., Canton 44709 for a Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mercy Hospice (Canton, Ohio), or Round Lake Golf Course (c/o Kim Derr, 2652 State Route 179, Lakeville, OH 44638).
