At the weekly meeting on May 18, 2018, President Amanda Tietze welcomed 54 members and 10 guests to the meeting. President Amanda was very pleased to announce the awards won by the Rotary Club of Canton at the District Conference on May 10-11. Canton Rotary won for their submissions for the Bryce Kendall Award - Best Club Avenue Project (Pocketpark Project) and also for the Roland Luhman Award - Best Community Project (Backpack Project) *See story above.
 
Rotarian Lynn Hamilton gave the Invocation. Rotarian Todd Morris gave the Rotofact.
 
Secretary Suzette Matthews welcomed the following guests to the meeting: Oni Jones and Jalen Turner (Character Champ Scholarship Winners); Jimmy Bradley (guest of Mike Brown); Dianne Williams (guest of Suzette Matthews); Ashley Bettis (guest of speaker, Max Barton); Shaunaugh Turner, Jeyah Turner and Joe Turner (guest of Character Champ Winner, Jalen Turner); Jennifer Allen (guest of Character Champ Winner, Oni Jones) and Richard Regula (Massillon).
 
The "Happy News" was provided by the following:
  • PDG/PP Bob Pattison - to celebrate his oldest grandson, who is graduating from Baldwin Wallace and is also part of a youth orchestra traveling to Ireland and Scotland this Summer;
  •  
  • Nick Perini - to celebrate the fact that his two young children, ages 2 and 4, made the trip to Hong Kong with Mom and Dad without any problems;
  •  
  • Richard Regula - to celebrate being at Canton Rotary and to share his excitement in spending time with Don Peterson at an event on Saturday, May 19th!
  •  
  • Don Peterson - to celebrate his son: 1) graduating from St. Thomas Aquinas; 2) becoming an Eagle Scout; 3) competing in the regional high school tennis tournament.
Unevent Raffle Committee Chair Drew Pelger, with assistance from Vice President Mark Rojek, pulled the final week's raffle prize tickets, along with the grand prize winning ticket for $500! (*Please see story above for list of all winners)

Don Peterson, Co-Chair of the Oktoberfest announced sponsorships are now available and forms were on each table.
 
May Speaker Chair Don Peterson introduced fellow Rotarian and speaker for the day, Max Barton. Max is the Executive Director of the Canton Museum of Art. He spoke on "The Economic Impact of the Arts: A National and State View"
 
President Amanda concluded the meeting with the following announcements:
  • next week there will be NO MEETING due to the Memorial Day Holiday;
  • the Rotary office will be closed on Friday, May 25th and Monday, May 28th;
The following Board of Directors will receive a makeup for attending the Board meeting on Tuesday, May 15, 2018: President Amanda Tietze, President Elect Michelle Mullaly, Treasurer Tom Clevenger, Secretary Suzette Matthews, and Sergeant-at-Arms Robert Matthews. Trustees attending were: Steve Fettman, Kurt Goodenberger, Bruce Schorsten, Bruce Hale, Drew Pelger, Don Peterson, Frank Fleischer, Jeff Scott and Parliamentarian Bob Pattison.
 
The following Rotarians will receive a makeup for volunteering at the Junior Achievement project on Tuesday, May 15, 2018: Mark Clendenin, Chris Burt and PP Rick Taylor.
