At our meeting on Friday, Feb. 18, 2022, President Mark (on crutches) welcomed 34 Rotarians and guests, including his wife and chauffeur, Tracie Clendenin, as well as former Canton Rotarian, Ted Madison.

After our regular Rotary business, we heard an update from two fantastic members from our Interact Clubs, one each from McKinley and the Early College Program, based at Lehman. It is very gratifying to hear how our club is supporting these programs that are helping these students to learn about community involvement, organization, and leadership.

Secretary Paula provided the following info:

On This Date in History:

    1878 – American inventor Thomas Edison patented the phonograph.

    1885 - Mark Twain publishes his famous, and famously controversial, novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

    2001 - Dale Earnhardt Sr., considered one of the greatest drivers in National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) history, dies at the age of 49 in a last-lap
                crash at the 43rd Daytona 500 in Daytona Beach, Florida.

    2010 – The Web site WikiLeaks began posting classified U.S. government documents provided by army intelligence analyst Bradley (later Chelsea) Manning;
               it was believed to be the largest unauthorized release of state secrets in U.S. history.

Weird Fact:

Today we celebrate—and show a little appreciation for—the thumb, which is considered to be one of the most important digits. On Thumb Appreciation Day, some people abstain from using their thumbs and instead just use their other fingers, which gives them a better appreciation for their thumbs. (Editor's note: we did not observe any Canton Rotarians who tried this. You might say that they "thumbed their noses" at the idea.)

There were no Happy Bucks contributions last week.
