JUNE 11, 2021 ZOOM/IN-PERSON MEETING NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

At our Zoom meeting on June 11, 2021, President-Elect Mark Clendenin, filling in for a traveling President Drew, welcomed a total of 34 Canton Rotarians (live at John's Bar and also via Zoom), as well as our guest speaker, Stark County Commissioner Janet Creighton, and guests of the club, James Elsfelder and Massillon Rotarian (and County Commissioner), Richard Regula.

Secretary Paula Mastroianni presented the following information:

Interesting historical facts for the day:
  • 1776 – The Continental Congress created the committee to draft the Declaration of Independence. Members included Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Ben Franklin, Roger Sherman and Robert Livingston.
  • 1898 –  Spain declared war against the US, beginning the Spanish-American War.
  • 1979 – Iconic American film actor, John Wayne, died.
  • 1982 – Everybody remembers these iconic words spoken by an out-of-this-world being that still live on today, "Phone home."  The movie classic, ET, was released on this day.
  • 2001 – Timothy McVeigh, The Oklahoma City bomber, was executed. It was then the worst terrorist act in US history killing 168 people.
  • 2002 – American Idol premiers on FOX.
  • 2009 – The WHO declares the H1N1 swine flu to be a global pandemic, the first such incident in over 40 years.

Bizarre Fact:
What the Queen wants, the Queen gets: on this day in 1964, Queen Elizabeth ordered the Beatles to perform at her birthday. They complied.

Happy Bucks:
Paula received "Happy Bucks" from President-Elect Mark Clendenin, President Drew Pelger and Richard Regula.

Like everyone and everything, COVID did a number on our Rotary Club!

Since we couldn't do our fundraisers or hold live meetings, our income took a BIG hit! We're talking TENS OF THOUSANDS of smackeroos!

We need a certain amount of money to operate our Club and perform the community support projects that we are famous for.

But, we're NOT ASKING YOU FOR A HANDOUT!

We're asking you to BUY SPRING RAFFLE TICKETS (or have your friends and family do so), FOR THE CHANCE TO WIN SOME GREAT PRIZES, and to SUPPORT OUR CLUB FUND!

Tickets are just: 6 for $25, 13 for $50, 27 for $100!

When you purchase your tickets, you can then choose to put all or some of them in one of 8 'baskets', attempting to win one or more of these great prizes:
