SARAH BOLTON, 16TH PRESIDENT, COLLEGE OF WOOSTER

Sarah R. Bolton joined The College of Wooster in 2016 as its 12th president. She is the first woman and first physicist to serve in the permanent role of president. During her tenure at Wooster, Bolton has championed significant transformations of the campus community and overall student experience by catalyzing investments in virtually every area of the College and building strategic connections across disciplines, individuals, teams, cultures, and differences to support the thriving of every student.

Prior to joining Wooster, Bolton served for six years as Dean of the College at Williams College, overseeing many aspects of student life. She started at Williams as an assistant professor of physics in 1995 and was promoted to associate professor in 2001 and full professor in 2007—the first woman to reach this milestone in physics at Williams. She served as chair of Williams’ physics department from 2007 to 2010 and won the college’s Outstanding Mentor Award for Fostering Inclusive Academic Excellence in 2009. As a professor, she advised a dozen senior theses and more than 20 student research projects.

As president, Bolton worked to build on Wooster’s history of academic excellence by expanding experiential learning opportunities, supporting strategic new academic pathways and connections, and cultivating a more global and anti-racist community and curriculum.

Bolton earned a bachelor’s degree in physics and biophysics from Brown University in 1988, a master’s degree in physics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1991, and a doctorate in physics, also from Berkeley, in 1995.

PRESIDENT MARK'S WEEKLY MUSINGS
If you were unfortunate and missed last week’s meeting, boy did you miss out!  Fellow Rotarians Karen Brenneman, Jeff Scott, Ernie Schott, and Steve Fettman were incredible as they spoke about their background, business, and tying it all into their involvement in the Canton Rotary Club.  I want to thank them all for their willingness to speak so eloquently.
There were two takeaways I got from the panel.  First was the value of mentorship.  Each one of them had a significant mentor that not only guided them in personal and business pursuits, but those mentors were often the catalyst in getting them involved in the Canton Rotary.  Second was linked to the adage that people don’t care what you know until they know that you care.  If you’re wanting to collaborate on a business level with fellow Rotarians you need to spend time with them, sit with them at our Friday lunch, work elbow to elbow with them on projects, and develop your friendship.  The business will come.  Are you that mentor, are you working side-by-side?
This week we launched the website for our annual Spring Fundraising Raffle.  Thanks go out to Paul Hervey and his team for their hard work. The website operates the same as last year.  Go online, buy your tickets and please them in the baskets of the items you are hoping to win. The more tickets, the better your chances.  As an added incentive, the more tickets you purchase the better the deal.  Please forward the information to you friends and relatives, as it funds raised go along way in supporting our charitable work.

See you Friday,

WHAT'D I MISS LAST WEEK?
At our meeting last Friday, President Mark welcomed 33 Canton Rotarians to hear a roundtable discussion on "The Business of Canton Rotary", featuring our own Karen Brenneman, Ernie Schott, Steve Fettman and Jeff Scott. These folks shared insight in there backgrounds, businesses, and their experiences in the Rotary Club of Canton. See President Mark's Weekly Musings for a little bit more info.

Sue Marzano, stepping in for Secretary Paula, offered this info:

This Day in History:

1862 - The U.S. Congress passed the Legal Tender Act, authorizing the use of paper notes to pay the government's bills. This ended the long-standing policy of only using gold or silver for transactions.

1870 - Hiram R. Revels was sworn in as the first African American member of Congress. (R-Mississippi)

1913 - The 16th amendment of the U.S. Constitution was ratified. It authorized a graduated income tax.

1964 - The 22 year old Cassius Clay shocked by dethroning reigning heavy weight boxing champion, Sonny Liston, with a 7th round technical knockout. The dreaded Liston was an 8 to 1 favorite to win. Clay predicted victory, though, boasting that he would "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee", and knock Liston out in the 8th round. He beat his prediction by one round!

Weird Fact:

In 1751, the nation's first performing monkey was exhibited in New York City. Admission to see the monkey was one cent.
