FOUR WAY TEST SPEECH CONTEST TO BE FEATURED THIS FRIDAY
Students from Canton City Schools will compete Friday in the club's annual Four-Way Test Speech Contest.  Jeff Scott, chairman of the Four-Way Test Committee, will serve as moderator. Each speaker will be asked to apply the test to everyday relationships with other people.  The contest will be judged by three Canton Rotarians.

Jeff Scott moved to Canton from Indianapolis in 1978 to apprentice for Gary Gerber and work in his Gary's Place salons. Jeff's professional background began as a stylist and soon developed into a hair color and cutting educator for Framesi USA and Clairol Logics as well as performing classes on Educational Cruise Seminars for five years. Jeff became manager of the salon chain in 1989 heading up education, hiring and training new staff members as well as customer service-related duties. In 1999, Jeff and business partner Shelly Talbot purchased the salon chain from former Canton Rotarian Gary Gerber and have developed the company into the largest salon and day spas in the area.

Jeff has been a Rotarian for 19 years; Jeff's Rotary involvement consists of serving on the Canton Rotary Board, GOTS, Co-Chair of the Student Exchange, Appreciation Day Chair, 4 Way Test Chair, Pancake Day Committee, as well as the Oktoberfest committee.  Jeff is also involved on the Redken Academy Advisory Board Cleveland and Board member for Camp Quality Ohio from 2010-2016. Jeff is married to Susan and they have two adult children, Kaitlyn and Kara.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings:

Of the things we think, say or do:

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

"THANK YOU" LETTER RECEIVED FROM PRINCIPAL CHRISTEN SEDMOCK, OF ALLEN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The Rotary office received a "Thank You" letter dated January 7, 2019, from Christen Sedmock, Principal from Allen Elementary Reading and Math Preparatory School. Principal Sedmock writes:

"Dear Canton Rotary ~ Words cannot express the gratitude for your generosity in sponsoring the “Stuff the School Bus” with non-perishable and canned food items event. I
was truly taken back to see an entire Allen classroom filled with food! Due to your generosity, we were able to support 150 families from Allen, Belden, and Gibbs School. This food helped feed families over the Winter Break. Families were extremely grateful, as we delivered the items or they came to pick them up.

For those of you who are not familiar with the Allen Community, we are located in the Southeast End of Canton. We currently have approximately 260 students, 100% of our students receive free breakfast, lunch, and a daily snack. Students that attend our after school program also receive dinner at school. Without your contributions, many of our children may have gone without food over the winter break.

In addition to the food sent home over break, we were able to replenish our daily snack supply as well as our Allen food pantry. Our food pantry allows us to send food home throughout the school year to families in need. We open our Food Pantry several times a month for families. Also, families know if they are in need of food they can get it at anytime. Our families depend on us on a regular basis since some do not have transportation and there are no grocery stores nearby.

I cannot thank you all enough for all of the racks of coats, hats, mittens, socks, underware, pants, shirts, shoes, etc.. Our students were so happy to receive new clothes. We were also able to stock our clinics as children come to school in need of these clothing items.

Words cannot express the gratitude for your on-going generosity in sponsoring the “Stuff the School Bus” event to assist our families for the second year. We are truly blessed to have a community partnership with the Canton Rotary. Thank you!!!     Sincerely, Mrs. Christen Sedmock, Principal"

HELP CANTON WIN THE JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT ROTARY BOWL-A-THON CHALLENGE!
A truly stellar (?) crew of Canton Rotarians have volunteered to compete in this year's Junior Achievement Bowl-A-Thon Rotary Challenge. The winner of the Rotary Challenge will be the team that 1) raises the most money via pledges and 2) knocks down the most pins this Saturday, March 2nd, at Park Centre Lanes!

While you are welcome to come to the lanes from 1 to 3 PM to cheer on your brave volunteers (or to bowl, as we could use one or two more bowlers), you can be most helpful by making a donation to Junior Achievement in the name of our Canton Rotary Challenge Team.

There are two ways to do so:

  1) Go to this link and make a credit card donation to JA that will be credited to our Rotary Bowl-A-Thon  Team:

  -2) Give your pledge/donation to one of these intrepid Canton Rotary bowlers:
     * President-Elect Mark Rojek
     * Vice-President Drew Pelger
     * PP Dan Matthews (who is bringing a 'ringer', er.. a 'mystery bowler')
     * Shawn Dougherty
     * James Boggs
     * PP Rick Taylor

THANKS!

And if you happen to be interested in bowling, please reach out SOON to Rick Taylor at 330-575-2870 or rickt@kozmosgrille.com
