THE BUSINESS OF CANTON ROTARY: HOW ROTARY CONNECTS
PLEASE NOTE: The program originally planned for tomorrow's meeting, our annual FOUR WAY TEST SPEECH CONTEST, has been postponed by request of the Canton City Schools. This was due to the forecasted 'wintry mix' for over night tonight and the fact that there are no classes scheduled for Friday. We will announce a new date once we know what it will be.

Instead, President Mark Clendenin will moderate a discussion of "THE BUSINESS OF CANTON ROTARY", featuring several of our fellow Rotarians who will share some insights into their businesses, their lives, and how Canton Rotary intertwines with and enhances both. It promises to provide some info about our members that you may not know, as well as perhaps some perspective on how Rotary might help YOU be successful and happy!

Please join us what should be a very interesting discussion.

PRESIDENT MARK'S WEEKLY OBSERVATIONS
And suddenly here we are at our last meeting of February.  It’s been a month of very interesting weather, speakers, and activities.  We were expecting to be entertained by our McKinley Speech & Debate students this week with their Four Way Test presentations.  However, given the potential inclement weather and the fact that they are off school Friday, we are going to pivot.  We will be having several of our very own Rotarians there to talk about themselves, their businesses, and their experiences as a Canton Rotarians.  You’re going to want to attend if you’re looking to find out a bit more.  Please make every attempt to attend this week’s meeting to support your fellow Rotarians and learn a few things about them.
You may have noticed that you didn’t receive an Eventbrite invitation to this week’s event.  We have elected to discontinue this process and now hope that we all know by now where and when our lunch meetings are, as well as the importance of attending them.  If you have been attending regularly, thank you.  If you have been unable to attend in person, but jump on Zoom with us, thank you.  If you happen to be missing both the in-person and/or Zoom, please engage.  We need you.

See you Friday,

President Mark
WHAT'D I MISS LAST WEEK?
At our meeting on Friday, Feb. 18, 2022, President Mark (on crutches) welcomed 34 Rotarians and guests, including his wife and chauffeur, Tracie Clendenin, as well as former Canton Rotarian, Ted Madison.

After our regular Rotary business, we heard an update from two fantastic members from our Interact Clubs, one each from McKinley and the Early College Program, based at Lehman. It is very gratifying to hear how our club is supporting these programs that are helping these students to learn about community involvement, organization, and leadership.

Secretary Paula provided the following info:

On This Date in History:

1878 – American inventor Thomas Edison patented the phonograph.

1885 - Mark Twain publishes his famous, and famously controversial, novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

2001 - Dale Earnhardt Sr., considered one of the greatest drivers in National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) history, dies at the age of 49 in a last-lap
crash at the 43rd Daytona 500 in Daytona Beach, Florida.

    2010 – The Web site WikiLeaks began posting classified U.S. government documents provided by army intelligence analyst Bradley (later Chelsea) Manning;
it was believed to be the largest unauthorized release of state secrets in U.S. history.

Weird Fact:

Today we celebrate—and show a little appreciation for—the thumb, which is considered to be one of the most important digits. On Thumb Appreciation Day, some people abstain from using their thumbs and instead just use their other fingers, which gives them a better appreciation for their thumbs. (Editor's note: we did not observe any Canton Rotarians who tried this. You might say that they "thumbed their noses" at the idea.)

There were no Happy Bucks contributions last week.

DON'T MISS OUR "NEW & IMPROVED" 4-WAY TEST SPEECH CONTEST - NEW DATE PENDING!
POSTPONED! - NEW DATE PENDING!

If you've ever attended our annual 4-Way Test Speech Competition at Canton Rotary, then you know what an AMAZING job these McKinley High School Speech & Debate Team members do applying the 4-Way Test! It really is a meeting NOT to be missed!

Well, we're happy to announce that this Competition is now BIGGER & BETTER!

First of all, there has been an addition of one more speaker to round us out at FOUR contestants.

Secondly, the Board has approved additional support of the program by increasing the prize money that the participants will receive:

1st place ……$300

2nd place…….$200

3rd place……. $100

4th place …….$100

Thirdly, the Board also approved an additional $300 to sponsor the McKinley speech team with their events. That totals up to $1,000 in additional support to this fine program and their excellent team members!

So, stay tuned for a new date, so you can plan to attend the Canton Rotary 4 – Way Test Competition between four McKinley Students, with the winner earning the right to represent us at District 6650 competition on April 2nd at the Fairways Golf Club in N. Canton.

These students are extremely well-trained by long-time coach, Manuel Halkias, and Kitty Burgett, and their teams consistently place at or near the top in state, local, and regional competitions.

You do NOT want to miss this chance to see these top-quality teen speakers at this meeting!

BTW…. I will need 3 judges to score their presentations. Please let me know if you are interested in helping! Jeff Scott
