STUDENT REPS FROM OUR INTERACT CLUBS TO GIVE UPDATE
This Friday our meeting will highlight our two Interact Clubs at McKinley High School and at the Early College Program at Lehman. We’ll hear updates from the students that have been chosen to represent each club on what they have accomplished so far this year and what activities and projects they have coming for the spring.

Interact clubs bring together young people ages 12-18 to develop leadership skills while discovering the power of Service Above Self. Find out how serious leadership can be seriously fun.

Interact clubs organize at least two projects every year, one that helps their school or community and one that promotes international understanding. Rotary club sponsors mentor and guide Interactors as they carry out projects and develop leadership skills.

Please join us this week to offer a strong Rotary welcome to our visiting Interact students!

DON'T MISS OUR "NEW & IMPROVED" 4-WAY TEST SPEECH CONTEST FEB. 25TH!
FEB. 25TH - LET'S HAVE  A "HUGE" TURNOUT TO SEE THESE AMAZING STUDENTS!

If you've ever attended our annual 4-Way Test Speech Competition at Canton Rotary, then you know what an AMAZING job these McKinley High School Speech & Debate Team members do applying the 4-Way Test! It really is a meeting NOT to be missed!

Well, we're happy to announce that this Competition is now BIGGER & BETTER!

First of all, there has been an addition of one more speaker to round us out at FOUR contestants.

Secondly, the Board has approved additional support of the program by increasing the prize money that the participants will receive:

1st place ……$300

2nd place…….$200

3rd place……. $100

4th place …….$100

Thirdly, the Board also approved an additional $300 to sponsor the McKinley speech team with their events. That totals up to $1,000 in additional support to this fine program and their excellent team members!

So........Mark your calendars on February 25th to attend the Canton Rotary 4 – Way Test Competition between four McKinley Students, with the winner earning the right to represent us at District 6650 competition on April 2nd at the Fairways Golf Club in N. Canton.

These students are extremely well-trained by long-time coach, Manuel Halkias, and Kitty Burgett, and their teams consistently place at or near the top in state, local, and regional competitions.

You do NOT want to miss this chance to see these top-quality teen speakers at this meeting!

BTW…. I will need 3 judges to score their presentations. Please let me know if you are interested in helping! Jeff Scott

PRESIDENT MARK'S WEEKLY MUSINGS

Fellow Rotarians,

I hope all of you had the opportunity to celebrate Valentine’s Day with someone special.  While I might agree that it’s a bit of a commercial holiday, it does give us the opportunity to acknowledge people around us for just being there.  While it doesn’t take a holiday to say I appreciate and love you, it doesn’t hurt either.

I hope you enjoyed the Superbowl.  Even though our Ohio team lost, they put up a good fight.  Now, if you’re a couple of our Rotarians that had the right numbers, you really enjoyed the game. Congratulations to Karen Brenneman for winning the 3rd quarter and “Magic Man” Phil Lattavo for winning the 1st quarter, 2nd quarter, and the end of game scores.  Thanks to all of you for helping us raise $500 for Pack the Bus.

This week we have representatives from our Interact Clubs joining us to discuss what they have been doing under the guidance of Jennie George.  I’m proud to say that this group really stepped it up this year.  I have a couple of additional tricks up my sleeve for them.

We had a great showing last week for our hybrid lunch.  Let’s keep up the great attendance this week and throughout the month.

I’ll see you Friday,

President Mark

WHAT'D I MISS LAST WEEK?
At our meeting last Friday, February 11, 2022, President Mark welcomed 42 Rotarians and 1 guest (Tracy Clendenin) both in person and via Zoom. What a great turnout! We received some excellent info about our own First Ladies' National Historic Site from Jennie Highfield, their President & CEO. Thank you Jennie!

Secretary Paula provided the following info:

On This Day in History:

1692 - Sarah Goode, Sarah Osborne and Tituba are arrested for the supposed practice of witchcraft in Salem, Mass.

1753 – Pennsylvania Hospital, the first hospital in the United States, began admitting patients. It was co-founded by Benjamin Franklin,

1964 – The "British Invasion" started: The Beatles made their first live appearance in the U.S. at the Coliseum in Washington, D.C.

1990 – Nelson Mandela, leader of the movement to end South African apartheid, is released after 27 years in prison.

Weird Fact:

National Peppermint Patty Day recognizes a treat enjoyed by millions around the world. On February 11th each year, sink your teeth into the minty chocolate sweet.

The oldest commercially-made mint patty or cake was made by the Quiggins family on the Isle of Man (an island located in the middle of the northern Irish Sea). They had been making the cakes since 1840, but in 1880, four of the sons formed the Kendal Mint Cake Company.
