FRIDAY'S MEETING WILL BE THE FIRST FELLOWSHIP MEETING OF THE YEAR!

Dear Rotarians,

I am so excited to have our first “Fellowship Meeting” of the year this Friday. As part of the theme “Be the Inspiration”, I decided to have monthly meetings where we had no speaker. I feel it is really important for us all to get to know one another better. I think ultimately that will build a much stronger club.

I ask that you step out of your comfort zone a bit and sit next to someone you don’t normally sit with. This will give you the opportunity to learn something new about someone!
I will start the meeting at the usual time with the ringing of the bell and then we will have our typical start of meeting stuff (Star Spangled Banner, Pledge of Allegiance, Invocation and Announcements). Then the meeting will be turned back over to YOU to have the opportunity to enjoy each other’s company.

IN OTHER NEWS
I wanted to give my most sincere Thank You to Rich Dever and his new member committee for the event at the Military Service Center. I would also like to give a Thank You to Bill Liber and his committee for our golf outing this past Friday. While I have not heard the final financial results from either of them, they were wonderful and well-attended events.

ANNUAL CANTON ROTARY'S FOUR PERSON SCRAMBLE RESULTS
The Rotary Club of Canton held it’s 2018 golf scramble on Friday August 17, 2018 at The Sanctuary Golf course in North Canton. There were concerns about the weather early Friday morning, but the rain and lightning held off until all 89 golfers had completed their round of golf.

A big "Thank You" goes out to our Gold Sponsors: YMCA of Stark County (Tim Shetzer), Maloney + Novotny (Dave Schrade), Medicine Center Pharmacy (Paul White), and Bill Liber.

We want to thank Dave Ewing and Liberty Ford Lincoln for sponsoring our "hole in one" contest with the prize of a two-year lease on a beautiful Lincoln MKZ. Unfortunately, no one got the hole in one but it provided some excitement. Also, thank you goes out to Ryan Parkinson and ProTech Security for providing a home security system which was the prize on hole # 9 for closest to the pin.

Below is a list of winners at this year's golf outing:

Bill Jazinski won the longest drive on # 7 for the men and Mary Sample won the longest drive for the women. Each received one dozen golf balls.

Bryan Bober won the closest to the pin on # 8 for the men and Jacora Barnett won that prize for the women.  A "his" and "hers" gift basket was provided to the winners compliments of Karen Brenneman.

Tom Jackson won the installation of a home security system plus 3 free months of free monitoring from ProTech Home Security Systems on # 9, compliments of ProTech Home Security Systems.

Bryan Bober won long drive for men on # 14 and Mary Sample won long drive for women. Each received one dozen golf balls.

Chris Schoeppner won the long putt on # 18 and received a free lesson and analysis from Golf Tech compliments of Joe Niamtu.

The putting contest was won by Ray Pelanda who sunk his putt and pocketed $140.00.

The first place team for the day, each receiving a $50 gift card for Foxy Golf, was Ben Wheeler, Rich Farris, Bryan Bober and an injured Paul Beinlich, at 15 under par. Second place team, each receiving a $30 gift card from Foxy Golf, was Steve Mazziotta, Steve Mears, Taylore Baker and Harrison Dickerhoff at 14 under par. Finally, the third place team, each receiving a $20 gift card to Foxy Golf, was Dave Ewing, Tim Hinchliffe, Alec Michael, and Dan Michael at 13 under par.

The winner of the 50-50 drawing was Alex Michael winning an impressive $232.00.

There were four Skins awarded each worth $100.00. The Ewing team won a skin on hole # 15, the Dougherty team won on hole # 14 and the Wheeler team won two skins for holes # 8 and # 10.

I want to thank the Gold Sponsors, the Hole Sponsors, and the door prize donors which allowed everyone to go home with a door prize.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENTIAL MONTHLY MESSAGE

Barry Rassin
President 2018-19

August 2018

A well-known saying goes, "If you want to change the world, go home and love your family." That doesn't mean people should ignore the needs outside their own homes; instead, they should pay attention to the needs within.

It can be tempting, when our priority is service, to focus only on the things that look like service: the projects, the planning, the work that yields a visible benefit to those who need it. But to do that work effectively, we need to keep our own house in order. In Rotary, that means conducting ourselves in accordance with the principles of Rotary, treating others with respect, and following The Four-Way Test. It means maximizing our impact by planning carefully and stewarding our resources wisely. And it means looking after the long-term health of our organization by ensuring that our membership is strong, engaged, and healthy.

Our membership has hovered around the same 1.2 million mark for 20 years. We aren't growing, and our membership is getting older. We have too many clubs that don't have the knowledge or motivation to have an impact: clubs that don't know what we're doing on a global level, clubs that don't know about our programs or our Foundation, that don't even know how to get involved. And with a membership that is still mostly male, we clearly aren't doing enough to become the organization of choice for women who are seeking to serve.

We are a membership organization first. If we want to achieve the goals we've set for ourselves, we need to put membership first. All of us have a responsibility to take membership seriously, not only by inviting prospective members, but also by making sure new members are welcomed into clubs that offer them something of value. If you see someone walk into a meeting and hesitate, be sure that person has a place to sit and is part of the conversation. If you're enthusiastic about a Rotary program, make sure your club knows about it and knows how to get involved. If you see a need in your community, talk about it at this week's meeting. If we want to be part of an organization that's strong, that's active, that's having an impact – start at home, and Be the Inspirationin Rotary.
