Tommy John had two careers in MLB. His first career started in 1963 with the Cleveland Indians. He enjoyed mild success his first 11 years in MLB and had his bes years in 1972, 1973 and 1974 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. John however tore is ACL tendon in his pitching arm and needed surgery. Surgery was usually the end of a pitchers career as no pitcher at that time ever returned successfully from arm surgery Dr. Frank Jobe performed the innovative new surgery and John rehabbed all of 1975 before returning to the Dodgers in 1976 John then embarked on his second career in MLB post-op and was better than before the surgery. John would win 20 games or more 3 times over the next 5 years with the Dodgers and Yankees. John was never a hard thrower and relied on a curve ball and hard sinker which batters would pound ground balls John would play 26 years in MLB and win 288 games over his career The surgery John had is aptly named “Tommy John” surgery and now many players have had the procedure and returned to continue their careers. You would be hard pressed to turn on a Major League Baseball game and not hear the name “Tommy John”.
