GREGG FICERY WILL SPEAK FRIDAY ON THE PRE-NFL PRO FOOTBALL RIVALRY BETWEEN CANTON BULLDOGS AND MASSILLON TIGERS
Gregg Ficery is a native of Pittsburgh, PA, the birthplace of pro football. Due to his love for sports, and his hometown, he embarked on The Heroes’ Journey, a forthcoming book introducing the dramatic story of the pre-NFL era to the world.

As the 100th anniversary of the National Football League approaches in 2020, nobody knows the true narrative that led up to its founding. The Heroes’ Journey brings that story to light with a treasure trove of new research, and never before published photographs from the career of one of the game’s early champions.

At the turn of the twentieth century, fanatic passion and media hype started exploding for the greatest pro football teams ever assembled in the growing Ohio League. More suddenly, the league died because of a gambling scandal involving the league’s two greatest teams – the Canton Bulldogs and Massillon Tigers. The game’s legacy was left suspended in time without resolution. It is the greatest sports story never told.

Ficery is also the Executive Producer of a related television miniseries being developed titled 'Massillon'.

HEALTH SCREEN & WELLNESS FAIR -- SAVES A LIFE!!!
On Monday, July 30th, the Rotary office received a phone call from a woman who had participated in the Health Screen & Wellness Fair we hosted this past April. She stated she had her blood drawn there and her results sent to her doctor. Her doctor contacted her and asked where she had her blood screened, and she replied, "The Rotary Club of Canton's Health Fair". The doctor asked her to please have her blood retested immediately.

From the initial screening at our Health Screen in April, she was diagnosed with Acute Leukemia. She told the Rotary office she was on her third round of chemo and doing well. Upon asking her doctor what would have happened if she had not had her blood tested at our Rotary Health Screen, her doctor replied, "You would have dropped dead in two months due to your low blood cell count".

Let us all learn from this story and help get the word out about our "life saving" health screening programs to your family, friends and everyone in the community!

At least one life has been saved by our event, why not strive to save more with "word of mouth" from our entire membership.

Our next Health Screen will take place on Saturday, November 27, 2018. More information with be coming at a later date.

JOIN YOUR FELLOW ROTARIANS TO SEE "ROCKTOPIA" AT THE AKRON CIVIC THEATRE!
If you regularly attend our weekly Canton Rotary meetings (and we certainly hope you do), you may have heard long time Rotarian Frank Fleischer proudly mention during Happy Bucks that his son, Maestro Randall Fleischer, is the conductor for a Broadway show/concert called ‘Rocktopia’.

Well, ‘Rocktopia’ is coming to the Akron Civic Theatre on Thursday October 25th! Here’s what their website says about ‘Rocktopia’:

“Direct from its smash-hit run on Broadway, the international music sensation ROCKTOPIA fuses the most iconic 20th-century rock with world-renowned classical masterpieces. ROCKTOPIA features the works of musical innovators across centuries—including Journey, Mozart, Queen, Beethoven, Aerosmith, Handel, Led Zeppelin, Tchaikovsky, U2, Heart, Strauss, The Who and more—performed by an elite lineup of vocalists, a five-piece rock band, a thirty-person choir, and a twenty-piece orchestra.

Created through the unique vision of vocalist and recording artist Rob Evan (Broadway: Les Misérables, Jekyll & Hyde, Trans-Siberian Orchestra) and Maestro Randall Craig Fleischer (Youngstown and Anchorage Symphony), ROCKTOPIA delivers one-of-a-kind, spine-tingling musical arrangements with insanely talented lead vocalists, a 5-piece rock band, select members from the New York Contemporary Choir and featured musicians from The Youngstown Symphony Orchestra.

Adored by audiences and critics alike, Billboard called ROCKTOPIA, “a thrilling musical fusion,” and DC Metro Arts adds, “with rousing peaks and powerful performances, you’ll be rocking and cheering!”
We are working to organize a group fellowship trip to see Rocktopia in Akron and we want to gauge the interest of the club in attending. Frank has indicated that he can arrange a ‘meet & greet’ with his son after the performance.

Tickets are $99.50, $49.50, and $37.50, based on their location in the theatre.

If you think you would like to join your fellow Canton Rotarians for a night at ‘Rocktopia’, please contact the Rotary office via email at info@cantonrotary.org or phone at 330-452-2882, or contact Rick Taylor at rickt@kozmosgrille.com or 330-575-2870. Please indicate what price of tickets you would most prefer. We do NOT require a commitment at this time, just checking on interest.  Thanks!
