"THE SCULPTURES OF THE STARK COUNTY COURTHOUSE: UNIQUE IN OHIO" PRESENTED BY M. J. ALBACETE
M. J. (“Al”) Albacete  will be our keynote speaker this Friday, with a presentation titled:  “The Sculptures of the Stark County Courthouse: Unique in Ohio”.  Many of our members will remember Al as a former long-time Canton Rotarian, until his retirement as Executive  Director Emeritus of the Canton Museum of Art.

Al maintains his position as an Adjunct Professor at Kent State University Stark Campus, teaching the history of architecture.  His wide-ranging studies, travels and personal interests during the course of his career have resulted in exhibitions and lectures throughout the state of Ohio and beyond, chief among them: “Architecture in Canton";  the Statue of Liberty: the Tomb of Tutankhamun (a.k.a.“King Tut”); and Michelangelo’s 'Pieta’. Al has several publications to his credit, writes occasional articles for the Repository, and is a frequent guest speaker for the Canton Symphony Orchestra.

For his Rotary program, Albacete returns to his early “Architecture in Canton” days for a detailed account of two singular and fascinating details of our Stark County Courthouse: the 63-foot-long sculpted pediment along the Tuscarawas Street facade, and the “Trumpeters of Justice” atop the Courthouse clock tower.  While there are 88 county courthouses in Ohio, many of them with pediments, none of them have a fully sculpted pediment with meaning symbolic to their respective communities, as ours does.  Stark County's is, indeed, “unique.”

After enjoying Al's illustrated lecture, you’ll never again walk past the Stark County Courthouse without pausing to look up!  And, by the way, he will be testing the knowledge of our members with questions from the podium!

Come join Al in what will be an entertaining and informative look at a local architectural gem.

SAM SHAHEEN RE-INTRODUCED AS A MEMBER OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF CANTON
During the July 12, 2019 meeting, Rotarian Ernie Schott (sponsor) re-introduced former Canton Rotarian Sam Shaheen to the members of the Rotary Club of Canton.

Sam Shaheen is a life long Cantonian and the former owner of Shaheen Moving, which was an agent for Mayflower Transit. Sam is currently a real estate agent with Cutler Real Estate, and can also arrange moving services with Andrews Moving & Storage, agent for United Van Lines.

Sam has been married to Beth Boettler Shaheen since 1991. They have two children: son Christian, 21, who is a fourth year IT Systems Engineering student at the University of Cincinnati; and daughter Emma, 19, who is a second year Interventional Specialist student (Dyslexia tutor) at Bowling Green State University. Their dog, Pearl, is a 9 year old Lab, Sharpei and Chou mix.

Sam was previously a Canton Rotarian from 2004-2006. Welcome back, Sam!

CANTON ROTARY WINS AWARD AT DISTRICT BANQUET
The Rotary Club of Canton was well represented at the 6650 District Awards Banquet held on Thursday, July 11, 2019. In attendance were: Michelle Mullaly, Mark Rojek, Drew Pelger, Theresa Blocher, PDG/PP Bob Pattison, PP Amanda Tietze, PP Jack Barkan, and Frank Fleischer.

During the banquet, awards were presented to Clubs with winning project submissions and new incoming 2019-2020 Club Presidents were sworn in by District Governor Dan Morgan (pictured above).

The Rotary Club of Canton's "Health Screen & Wellness Fair", submitted by Mark Rojek, received the Roland Luhman Award for 'Best Community Project'. Accepting the award for the Club was President Michelle Mullaly.

The Health Screen & Wellness Fair was started by Rotarian Bob Matthews in 2014 to help address the health needs of our community. Bob arranged a partnership with Mercy Medical Center and the result was a health screening event that could provide low-cost blood testing and wellness services to those in our community who might have limited access to health insurance or are under-insured. Many individuals who attend this event would not be able afford these services without this event. All test results from these screenings can be forwarded to attendees' individual physicians for follow-up care.

It takes many Canton Rotarians volunteers to make this event successful. In addition to marketing and promotional efforts prior to the event, there are on-site volunteers that assist the day of the event itself. The total volunteer hours from the last Health Screen event in April, 2019, totaled 130.5 hours. Congratulations to Chairman Bob Matthews and his committee for helping the Rotary Club of Canton receive this prestigious award!

Finally, Canton Rotary received a certificate from The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International and Rotary District #6650 for it's financial support of Rotary's Polio Eradication campaign, having raised at least $1,000 toward Polio Plus. Thank you to all members who contributed toward this effort!
