APRIL CHARACTER COUNT WINNERS RECOGNIZED AT FRIDAY'S MEETING, MAKAI BURNS, SKYLAR MORSE AND ASHLEY ELLER

During the April 26, 2019 meeting, Rotarian Mike Brown introduced the April Character Count recipients from McKinley High School, Makai Burns, Skylar Morse and Ashley Eller.

 

Makai Burns is a student who embraces and exhibits excellent values in his everyday actions. Makai is an extremely hard working, respectful and professional student. As a culinary arts student, he has ample opportunity to put the six pillars of character into action. When asked about Makai's work ethic and interaction with the public, Chef Escola responded, “Makai works various jobs in our Canton City restaurant, the City Grille. He works with the general public at least 50% of the time,  including at the Front Counter/Carry-out position. When interacting with the public, he is incredibly disciplined, and never responds in an unfavorable manner even in the most stressful situations. He is accountable and always perseveres. I can trust him to do what he is supposed to do when he is supposed to do it. Makai also works as our dining room manager and server. He has been an asset to our culinary program and will be missed when he graduates." Makai has been accepted to and will attend the University of Akron to major in Business in the fall.

 

 

Skylar Morse is a young lady of exceptional character, determination, and diligence.  Skylar has a 3.86 unweighted GPA, and has taken Honors, Advanced Placement, and College Credit Plus courses.  In addition, Skylar has been in the Project Lead the Way Engineering Career/Tech program since her freshman year.  Skylar has been very involved with a variety of activities at McKinley, including Football Manager, Mat Statistician for varsity wrestling, National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, McKinley Scholars, and Technical CAMP.  Skylar will join the Army National Guard following graduation and will attend Ohio University to major in BioMedical Engineering once she completes Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training.

 

 

Character is the first word that comes to mind when one thinks of Ashley Eller.   Ashley works hard at school every day. She is a part of the Early Childhood Education program at McKinley and is passionate about working with children.  She is completing her student teaching at Little Learners Child Development Center while caring for infants, and also working with the Rising Stars program at Madge Youtz Elementary, where she helps tutor students in grades 3 through 5. Ashley is always willing to speak up when she is worried about a friend in danger, even when it means that the friend may be upset with her. She regularly speaks up when she feels that something is not right or fair and holds herself to high standards of honesty and integrity.  After high school, Ashley plans to explore additional ways she can help others and is planning to pursue a career working with the elderly in a nursing home setting. Whether Ashley ends up working with the young or the old, she will do it with a great kindness and compassion.
