1892 - The first official basketball game was played in Springfield, Massachusetts, by YMCA students of the game's inventor, James A. Naismith.

1977 – President Jimmy Carter grants an unconditional pardon to hundreds of thousands of men who evaded the draft during the Vietnam War.
1978 – The Bee Gees Saturday Night Fever album goes number one and remains there for 24 weeks.
2008 – Today is “Black Monday” in worldwide stock markets. FTSE 100 had its biggest ever one-day points fall in history, European stocks closed with their worst result since 9/11, and Asian stocks drop as much as 15%.
Weird Fact:
In 1790 Joseph Guillotine proposed a new, more humane method of execution: a machine designed to cut off the condemned person's head as painlessly as possible. Then in 1793 The French King Louis XVI is guillotined for treason.
