THE ROTARY CLUB OF CANTON ANNOUNCES FOOD DRIVE TO BENEFIT CANTON CITY SCHOOL CHILDREN
Tens of thousands of children across the United States are hungry and here in Canton, Ohio, it is no different. According to recent census information, 48% of the children in the City of Canton live in poverty. The Canton City School District does its part to help alleviate some of the hunger among their students by offering breakfast and lunch free of charge to all of the student population during the school week. But what happens during long breaks from school?

“We have many families calling our office the week of Christmas asking where they can get food,” said Erin Cole, Child Nutrition Director for Canton City Schools. It is up to the principals at each of the individual schools in the district to try and find a sponsor to help them provide food for their students over the long winter break.

That’s where the Rotary Club of Canton comes in. President-Elect Michelle Mullaly, who also serves as the President & CEO of the Canton Symphony, wanted to do something. “During this past summer, we received a grant that allowed us to provide backpacks of food for the children in summer school to take home over the weekend. The principal from Allen Elementary, one of the poorest in Canton City, contacted me to see if our Club could do something for her school over Christmas,” said Ms. Mullaly. The Pack the Bus idea was born.

The Rotary Club of Canton will spearhead a Pack the Bus food drive to provide needy families in the Canton City School District with much-needed food over the holiday break. The Club will kick it off by purchasing $1650 worth of non-perishable items with the remaining money from the grant. They are looking for members of the community to donate additional non-perishable food items for the children of Canton.

Please bring items on December 12, 2017 from 10am-2pm. The McKinley High School Marching Band is generously donating their equipment trailer to use as the “bus” for the food drive and will also be on-hand to perform. They will be located in the parking lot of the Zimmermann Symphony Center, 2331 17th St NW, Canton. The Center is attached to McKinley Senior High School.

NEW MEMBER, JOHN KALOGERAS, INTRODUCED TO THE CLUB
During the Canton Rotary meeting on Friday, December 1, 2017, PP Dan Matthews (sponsor) introduced his new member, John Kalogeras, to the Rotary Club of Canton.

PP Dan said the following about John: "Our newest member is actually a former member, having been first introduced in the late 1990's by our dear departed friend and Past President, Richard Farson. He was born in Canton, attended Jackson High School, and was a member of this club the first time for about five years.

In 2007, John founded TJK Catering, which he named after his father, Thomas John Kalogeras, as a tribute to his memory. John's mother, Rena, is a 55-year member of St. Haralambos Church.

Since 2008, TJK has catered events for the Canton Civic Center, Walsh University, the Patriot Ball, the WWE, Aerosmith, numerous NFL teams and owners, NBC Sports, ESPN, the NBA Charlotte Hornets, and NCAA teams, plus numerous weddings, and corporate and civic events throughout NE Ohio.

John and Kim, his bride of 22 years, are parents of daughter, Kimmy, 20, who is working toward her Bachelor's Degree in Business at Loyala Marymount in Los Angeles, after studying at the Culinary Institute of America in New York.

John's wife, Kim, is a second generation CPA, and is the owner of Lytkowski & Associates in Cleveland. Kim also supports the TJK enterprise and helps out whenever she can. They both enjoy travelling to California to visit Kimmy.

John enjoys all sports, especially football. His newest passion in the last 10 years is running, serious RUNNING! Since 2011, John has completed 22 marathons and ultra marathons! He has especially enjoyed two new running places he's discovered: one near the Golden Gate Bridge and another along the Hudson River.

As important as family and food are to John, Kim, and Kimmy, they share another interest with equal passion: rescuing animals in need of a home. The Kalogeras's have rescued over 35 dogs, cats and birds since 2010 alone. So when you think of John just remember: family, food and furry friends!"

CHARITABLE FUND DRIVE UNDERWAY!
Happy December Rotarians!

It’s that time of year when we are in the midst our Annual Charitable Fund Drive! As is customary, I will be making a weekly plea from the podium for your participation.

The Charitable Fund is vital to our Club’s philanthropic endeavors. With this fund, we support projects such as Polio Plus, the Philomatheon Society, RYLA, Rotary Scouts, Interact and Scholarships. This year we also started the Backpack Project under the charitable fund. It is important that we continue to support projects in the community where we work, live and play.

I am not going to be focusing on the goal amount – instead I’m hoping for 100% participation. It’s not important how much you give, just that you give something. Please consider your gift with a generous spirit.  **Please make checks payable to the Canton Rotary Charitable Fund
