Our speaker this Friday is our very own Darin Nissley, Executive Director of Lighthouse Ministries.
Lighthouse Ministries is an urban youth center in Southeast Canton near STEAM Academy at Hartford Middle School. Established in 1996, Lighthouse has become a trusted fixture in the community for parents to send their children for academic support and enrichment activities.
It has grown to four full-time staff overseeing a year-round slate of programming for 100-150 students each year. With a focus on Experiential Education, Lighthouse uses its Art Studio, Student Study Center, Outdoor Classroom, and its spacious Multi-Purpose Room for music, entrepreneurship, art, and science programming allowing students to explore who they are and who they want to be.
Darin and his wife Ramona have also called Southeast Canton their home since Lighthouse opened. They have three adult children, including their daughter and her young family whom live nearby. Darin serves as an Elder at First Mennonite Church. He graduated from the 29th class of Leadership Stark County and currently serves on its Asset Building Day Committee. In his spare time, he enjoys beekeeping, reading, tending his fruit trees, and light construction projects around his home.
Just like that it is August! It is so incredibly hard to believe that the summer is moving along so quickly. I thought this week I could recap a bit from last Friday’s lunch meeting. If you couldn’t join us, you missed an excellent talk from Dr. Rusnak, our Stark County Coroner, and as it turns out, the neighbor of Jon Adland, Sue Marzanno, Kyle Brown and myself. Small world!
Our August 6th 2021 meeting at John’s bar will close out a great COVID adjustment time for us. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank Past President Drew Pelger and the John’s Bar management and great staff that helped us keep the lunches going. Please join us at John’s Bar this Friday as we close that chapter.
August 13th 2021 will mark our first traditional luncheon since the start of COVID. Our new Friday luncheon location is at Christ Presbyterian Church located in downtown Canton on Tuscarawas across from the Timken Campus of McKinley High School.
We have again contracted with Mr. Mike’s as our caterer. Our choice of this location was based on their ability to provide a beautiful venue, with a perfect location, with an elevator and onsite parking. There will be more information coming on this so stay tuned for details. I will need some volunteers to make this happen. I’m in need of greeters, attendance workers, cash handlers, and someone to handle Zooming the meeting. Please reach out to me by text or phone at 330-267-8869.
At our weekly meeting on July 30, 2021, President Mark Clendenin welcomed 30 Canton Rotarians (live at John's Bar and Grille and also via Zoom), as well as our guest speaker, Dr. Ronald Rusnak, Stark County Coroner, and club guests Nasser Shaheen, Rich Micelli, and Benny Breckenwall.
Becky Clark presented the following information:

We have a NEW permanent location for our Friday luncheon meetings!
Hey, we'll be back in Beautiful Downtown Canton soon!
Starting with our meeting on Friday August 13, 2021, we will be at the historic Christ Presbyterian Church at 530 Tuscarawas Street West, right across Tusc from McKinley High School Downtown Campus (the old Timken High).
Access to their mobility-friendly parking lot on the west side of the building is off of 2nd Street SW, from McKinley Avenue S. The building entrance is the middle door on the parking lot side. Meeting room is at the top of the stairs and, should you care to use it, there is an elevator just inside the entrance. (Please let President Mark know if you think you might need help navigating to the meeting that day.)
Meals will be provided by our old friend Terry from Mr. Mike's Catering. As you may remember, they always served us great food when we were across the street from Tim's Tavern.
PLEASE NOTE: We could use some help with at least this first meeting at CPC. Please see President Mark's comments in his article above. Thanks!
