CANTON ROTARY WINS AWARDS AT DISTRICT CONFERENCE
The Rotary Club of Canton was well represented at this year's District 6650 Conference at the beautiful Avalon Inn located in Warren, Ohio. In attendance were: President Amanda Tietze; President-Elect Michelle Mullaly; Vice President Mark Rojek; PDG/PP Bob Pattison; PDG/PP Dave Ewing; and Inbound Youth Exchange Co-Chair Amy Mustafaga.

Seven Canton Rotarians were remembered through a candle lighting memorial service honoring their contributions and service to Rotary. Those honored were: PP Don Coen, Pat Gannon, Ralph Regula, Jim Lockshin, John DeWees, Reich Watterson and John Schumacher.

Canton Rotary received two awards:
  • The Roland Luhman Award for 'Best Community Project' for the Pocket Park Project (submitted by Chairperson PP Craig Young)
  • Bryce Kendall Award for 'Best Club Avenue Project' for the Backpack/Pack the Bus program (submitted by Chairperson Michelle Mullaly)

Canton Rotary also received a certificate for donating $1,000 towards Polio Plus this year. We ended the conference with a fun talent show by the exchange students, featuring our very own exchange student, Sara Baldoni. Sara and her partner lip synced to songs from the movie "Grease". The day finished with a very moving video of all the exchange students and their time together here in the U.S.A. The new outgoing exchange students received their jackets and pins in preparation to go off for a year in their host countries.

If you have never attended a District Conference, I highly recommend it to all Rotarians. You will meet great people from other clubs in our distirct, hear great speakers, and come back recharged, with a greater love and appreciation for Rotary.

CHARACTER CHAMP SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTATION
During the meeting on May 18, 2018, Rotarian Mike Brown presented the Character Champ Scholarship winners from McKinley High School: Oni Jones (Dec.'17) and Jalen Turner (Mar '18).

ONI JONES
Oni Jones is a leader, a scholar, and a great person. She has been on Honor Roll since freshman year, has lettered 3 years for the cross-country team, and lettered three years in the band. Not only is she great in the classroom, she has been amazing in extracurricular activities as well. She has held lead positions in four musicals: Mary Poppins, Godspell, The Wiz, and 42nd street. She has been accepted into National Honor Society, holds a leadership role in McKinley Women of Honor, and was awarded the 'Academic Award' for the cross-country team. We are very proud of Oni at McKinley High School, as she is a very kind and respectful person. She plans to attend either Kenyon College or Oberlin College, and wants to major in the field of art.

JALEN TURNER
Jalen Turner is hardworking in his academics and community service.  Jalen has been creating his own community service by conducting donation drives. He collects money, as well as toiletry and food donations and donates them to local shelters. One of the shelters he donates to is The Hunter House. The Hunter House is a drug addiction and mentor house, in conjunction with SMHA, which helps people with recovery services. Jalen has been actively building his organization since 2014.  He is a member of First Church of God in Christ, where he also volunteers and assists with events. Jalen also works part-time at BJ's Wholesale Club. As you can see, he is a very active young man.

Jalen also provides Thanksgiving dinner at his church for 50 to 100 people, planning the entire event. He solicits donations for this dinner and directs a team of volunteers to prepare and serve this dinner. Monthly, he tries to create events with other local charities to provide food and clothing to families in need. Easter will be his next big event, with an Easter basket giveaway.

Upon graduation, Jalen plans to attend Kent State, teh University of Akron, or Walsh University, with intentions to major in Business Administration.  We are pleased to honor Jalen with this award. Jalen is true asset to the community and he should be proud of what he has accomplished over the last several years of service in helping others.

CANTON ROTARY AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS TO FOUR INTERACT STUDENTS
(recipients pictured left to right - Madison Cline, Victoria Mulbach, Meleah Nelson and Madisyn Smith)

On Monday, May 14, 2018, the Rotary Club of Canton presented four $1,000 scholarships to Canton Rotary Interact students at Benders Restaurant. Madison Cline, Victoria Mulbach, Meleah Nelson and Madisyn Smith were recipients of the Character Through Poetry Project scholarship. The scholarship is funded by the Daniel M. and Maureen O'Gunn Foundation and administered by the Rotary Club of Canton. To receive the scholarship, students must memorize and recite the "If" poem by Rudyard Kipling on two separate occasions and type the poem flawlessly. The Character Through Poetry Project began in 2010 and to date, fifteen students have received the scholarship. The "If" poem was written by Rudyard Kipling in 1895 in the form of paternal advice to his son John.

IF
If you can keep your head when all about you
 Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
 But make allowance for their doubting too.
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
 Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
 And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
 If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster,
 And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
 Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
 And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make a heap of all your winnings
 And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
 And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
 To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
 Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
 Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
 If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
 With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
 And—which is more—you'll be a Man, my son!
