JULIA  GULLEY, RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT MANAGER FOR THE SALVATION ARMY, TO SPEAK THIS FRIDAY
Julia Gulley
Resource Development Manager
The Salvation Army – Canton OH

Julia Gulley grew up in The Salvation Army. Her parents were officers (pastors) and she spent her early childhood years surrounded by those who served and those who needed services. It was those early experiences that fostered her desire to help others as an adult.

Much of Julia’s professional life has been spent working for The Salvation Army in one capacity or another. Julia graduated from Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey with a BA in English and she has been an administrator, a social service case worker, a bookkeeper, and, currently, a fundraiser. In fact, Julia got into development through her time with The Salvation Army and realized that this was the area where she could best use her gifts to help others. She spent several years doing fundraising for The Salvation Army on a part-time basis before taking a full-time position with the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, New Jersey. After five years with them, she relocated to Ohio, where her parents live in retirement, and accepted a position working for The Salvation Army of Canton. Now she is blessed to be able to use her gifts to help those who are in need, doing the work that God has called her to do.

WANTED: FUN-LOVING & GENEROUS ROTARIANS!

Wait, wouldn't that be , like, ALL Canton Rotarians?

At any rate, if you want to have some fun and peronally support one of Canton Rotary's favorite non-profits, I invite you to THE CANTON ROTARY TEAM for the Third Annual Rotary Junior Achievement Bowl-A-Thon Challenge!

On Saturday March 2nd at Park Centre Lanes, JA will be conducting their Annual Bowl-A-Thon. As part of this friend- and fund-raising event, local Rotary clubs will be competing for the coveted (?) Rotary Challenge trophy and....more importantly.....BRAGGING RIGHTS!

We would love to have a couple of teams of Canton Rotarians participate in this majorly FUN event! Cost to participate is only $10, which includes three games of bowling, shoe rental, and a commemorative tee shirt. Their are many fun games included in the Challenge that day, plus there is access to adult beverages, pizza, and other bowling alley fare.

And, it's a chance to have some serious fun with your fellow Rotarians!

Beyond that, each bowler is tasked to raise as much money as humanly possible via pledges from family, friends, co-workers, and strangers on the street (just kidding; but, hey, if it works for you......). As you can see, bowling skill is NOT a requirement!

Rotary Challenge winner will be the club that raises the most money for Junior Achievement. Canton came in a very close second to Plain Township last year, so our goal is clear: beat the pantaloons off the rest of the Rotary Clubs!

If you are interested in participating, please contact me at rickt@kozmosgrille.com, or via text or call at 330-575-2870. I will soon be receiving info on how each of us can sign up and start recording donations to our Championship effort!

WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR LUNCH FRIDAY?
As you may know, Rotary was founded by Paul Harris, with several acquaintances from various professions, who decided to get together for lunch each week for friendship and to share information on their jobs and businesses. Eventually, these folks decided to expand their 'mission' to include civic engagement (their first project was to make a donation to pay for the first public restrooms in Chicago!)

With that in mind, FELLOWSHIP is still a major tenet of Rotary, and, we think, one of the main reasons that people join.

So we would like to encourage ALL of you to attend our weekly meetings as often as you can!

Just to remind everyone, our weekly meetings are held on Friday's beginning at 11:45 am at the Alex D. Krassas Event Center located at 251 - 25th Street in Canton. If for some reason you haven't been there (and we certainly hope that's not the case), it is a great facility with delicious food! And we still offer some fantastic speakers and programs!

To give you some idea of our recent attendance, out of our total of 132 Canton Rotarians, here are the numbers of attendees the last few weeks:

January 4 -                52 members
January 11 -              51 members
January 18 -              50 members
January 25 -              47 members
February 1 -               45 members

We would LOVE to get those numbers up........NOT for the sake of our 'stats', but so that we have more people with whom to enjoy Rotary face-to-face!

A great location, great food, great programs.........most importantly, GREAT PEOPLE!

Hope to see you at a meeting soon!

FROM THE DESK OF DISTRICT GOVERNOR SCOTT SCHULICK
Dear Rotarians:

Happy New Year! Happy 1/2 Rotary Year!  I've completed all of my official visits--46 in all--and I thank each and  every one of you and your clubs for such warm welcomes.  The visits were invigorating for me as I witnessed how we are "being the inspiration" across the district to our clubs, our communities and our world.  I look forward to attending many of your club events in the second half of the year.

Please make every effort to attend our District Art Auction to support The Rotary Foundation on Friday, February 1 at the SOAP Gallery in Youngstown.  We have received amazing art work from talented district Rotarians and their families and you'll want to make every effort to purchase these treasures and simultaneously support the foundation.   Even your DG has submitted a work of art!   This will be a fun and casual event (jeans welcome!) and we will we host special guests Mary Beth Growney Selene, Rotary Foundation trustee and Stephanie Urchick, Rotary International Director-Elect.  Special thanks to the planning committee, and especially event chair, Michelle Mulally, President of the Rotary Club of Canton for her leadership.  And speaking of foundation, thanks to all of you who have supported our district wine challenge.  Nearly $17,000 has been raised to date!

If you have not begun to track your club's successes and progress on the Presidential Citation, I recommend appointing a club chairperson or committee to do so.  There's still plenty of time to accomplish the goals of President Barry Rassin.  The citation is attached to this newsletter (LINK), and my goal is that all of our clubs will receive the citation this year.

Mark your dates for the District Conference, "Better Together," where Rotarians from Districts 6650 & 6690 will gather to celebrate Rotary.  We have the distinct honor of hosting RI Past President K.R. "Ravi" Ravindran as our keynote speaker.  The conference committee will be releasing more details shortly, but make every effort to be in Columbus April 12-13 for the event!

Club president-elects should be registering for All Ohio PETS (President-Elect Training Seminar) in Columbus on March 8-10.  Incoming RI President Mark Maloney will be present to install next year's club leaders as "Rotary Connects the World," our new Rotary Theme is introduced.

And finally, January is Vocational Awareness Month.  Vocational Service is often referred to as the "forgotten" avenue of service, but remains one of the most important.  Each of us, through our classification system, is identified in Rotary by our vocation and work lives. Paul Harris, our founder, wanted to connect with people from all walks of life and business and promoting the diversity of our vocations in a hallmark of Rotary.  Try to plan a vocational awareness event this year, which can be as simple as Rotarians sharing what they do and how they became involved in their work.

Be the Inspiration!

Scott
